The Mechanic's Life

Well I work at a local garage in this here community

i am an automobile mechanic for one of them big car agencies

well i was workin at my bench the other day,

i had a four speed, all apart

when this guy walked up and before he spoke, i knew just how he'd start

 

he said buddy i was in here the other day, i had a rear axle bearing put in

and ever since then my wipers won't work, and my lights well they won't dim

well I could see he's a wantin' somethin for nothin that's the category I'd put him in

so I sent him off to see the service manager and I sang out with a grin

 

oh the car can be junk when they bring it in, but i know when i get through

that sure as there's a hell i know they're gonna yell

if it doesn't run like new

this is wrong and that's not right

how's come it costs so much?

while they all stand and yell

though none of them could tell a piston from a clutch

 

now there's this other type a fella ya see he's gotta be right there

ya lookin' over your shoulder and a-gettin' in ya hair.

and to hear him talk, why it'd make ya wonder why he brought his car in here

but you pay no mind, he's the other kinda you run up on, through the years.

 

now someday you know in that far beyond up above those shining stars

well, there's gotta be a place for mechanics like me, way up, there afar

if there is and i make that place, well here's my heart's desire

though it might not sell, I'm gonna stand and up and yell

go fix your own damn car!

I tell ya boys this mechanic's life, it's a hard life

not like drivin' a truck, or pickin' on a ol guitar
