WIX Oil Filters

There is yet another thread going at TDS about Wix oil filters. I have noticed two of my customers trucks doing the same thing: 2-3 second delay in oil pressure after starting. Neither customer services his truck at my dealer so I am suspicious. Just curious if any of you have seen this or have any info to add?

i've never had problems out of them, at least not lately. we stopped using the NAPA WIX filters about six months ago, mainly due to us finding a good source on Motorcraft ones for the same price.

i have seen their fuel filters cause issues though, mainly due to letting water go through the paper and royally mess up some injectors.

I had one last week where the customer was complaining of intermittant hard starts. I went out with the customer and fired it up. I started right up that time but the oil psi gauge had a few second delay. I asked him and sure enough he had just put a WIX in it. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbup.gif The problem however was an intermittantly biased ICP.

Amazing how that seems to happen a lot! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/hammer2.gif

The gage and the ICP concerns are not related obviously but was the customer concerned with the gage at all or was this something you happened to notice?

  • 2 weeks later...

We have a truck in with an intermittent hard start and the oil gage was showing no pressure for several seconds. I removed a NAPA oil filter, made in Korea (I think) and the base was distorted. This filter too was not the root cause but it's interesting one the less.

I find a big problem with Wix and some aftermarket oil filters is that the top of the filters always come apart and stay stuck in the cap. Last week I changed a filter that looked like it had been crushed, whoever did the oil change before forgot to remove the piece from the cap and jammed the new filter on to the piece, lol.

I've noticed some aftermarket filters come apart as well. Hows this for food for thought? I just did an oil change on a 2003 that came in for an oil leak. Customer brings in his own case of Amsoil and an Amsoil filter. The oil I drained from the engine was very black and dirty looking. I was reading some of the literature that came with the oil and filter and learned a few things. Amsoil says you can change your service interval to every 25,000 miles with their oil and filter. I also learned this oil comes at the handsome price of about $135 dollars. Yikes!

Are you freakin kidding me? /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/puke.gif 25K on an oil and filter interval??? How could they even consider that? Even if the oil IS that good I still wouldn't leave it in one of these engines that long. Oh the humanity!

Ahhh, gotta love that Spamsoil... IIRC, for the oil to go that far, you're supposed to draw samples and have them tested every now and again.....

FWIW, I love how Spamsoil wins and it's not their worn out oil giving drivability concerns... it's gotta be this POS engine (that seems to run real good on regularly changed dino oil).
