fabfoes87
Okay, thrown into this nightmare already diaged by another tech. Heap of shit 7.3 350 dump worked and beat extremly hard and major lack of maintence by owner. Complaint of low power and cel. Diaging tech was pulled off to finish another job, soo im in the ring to install parts ordered. #3 injector and fuel pump on the bill. Install pump last friday, began injector removal on Saturday. Monday finish injector install and to be sure of correct operation of system check fuel pressure at pump with 5 gauge bar. Turn key and nothing. Wait 5 seconds and pressure rises to 10psi. Fuel pump shuts off and psi drops to zero. Brand new motocraft pump. Pressure can build as high as 40 psi with multiple key on cycles. Recheck inlet restriction twice and never goes above 4inches. I isolate pump from tank with clean jug of diesel to inlet, booster pack to pump power and ground, and oulet fed into container to hopefully catch massive amnount of diesel. Pump ran and sucked air. No diesel. Could not believe that i would have a bad motocraft pump out the box? So reluctant, get another pump coming, after parts tries to give me HFCM for a 6.0. Fast forward to this morning and install new pump. Recheck psi again and nothing . Im stumped. I begin to think of the 2 little filters in the pickup in the aft axle tank. Procede to remove pickup and inspect. Tubes ok and pickup sock not cloged. Take apart houising and find both filters filled with tank material. Inspect tank and sure as shit tank is wasted. Cleaned filters and reoved all debris. Installed and had fuel psi of 65. The truck obviously needs a tank, but the owner is so out of touch with realitly that, im sure we will see this truck again for same symptom. I couldn't believe that the cloged filters in the pickup wouldn't show on the inlet restriction test.
Bruce Amacker
The last 7.3/clogged screens I checked with a restriction gauge showed almost 29" of vacuum in the shop, not even driving it. I was surprised the FP would even draw that much vacuum. Complaint was intermittent stall on the highway with no relevant DTCs. Sometimes the crud can fall away from the screen just long enough to allow fuel flow to occur. That's what must have happened with yours. You can tell customers the truth until you're blue in the face and they still won't believe you. I remember one with clogged screens, a tank full of rust, and 8 bad injectors that I wouldn't warranty the new injectors without a new or serviced tank. He declined and was back again several months later for another set of injectors from rust intrusion. I have lots of pics (still!) because I wanted to document EVERYTHING and I knew he'd be back bitching. He was, and got zero warranty. Oh, well. You can lead a horse to water...... LARRY BRUDZYNSKI
Just say no, to your S/A and S/M. Show your findings and stick to your guns. This is your comeback if it does come back. Your the last one to touch it and it will bite you in the ass. Make sure you doc. the shit out of this repair.
Keith Browning
You guys know I take a lot of pictures. There are some jobs, like this one, where I will print the pictures and staple them up with the repair order. Take those old digital cameras to work. They do come in handy. Mikill
I rarely see a truck with an aft axle tank with just a bad pump. 9 times out of 10 the tank is rusted up clogging filters causing the pump to not build any pressure.
Keith Browning
Ditto. Speaking of those aft axle tanks... have they become available again? Has anything changed? We have been getting tanks relaminated since the new tanks became unavailable which is working out nicely to be honest. The company that does them now has exchange tanks so no waiting a week for them, they are half the price of a new tank and have triple the warranty of a new tank. Aaron
The last aft-axle tank I had with no fuel pressure had the sock full of dirt, as it's a dumptruck at a topsoil farm. Tank looked okay inside though.

Last I heard they were still unavailable but it works out much better to have them sent out. The company we have drops off a reconditioned tank and takes the bad one so we don't have any waiting period as well. Much cheaper for all the fleets we have. Our shop does about 8 tanks a week. Brad Clayton
The owner of this truck finally decided to pick it up Saturday. It's been junking up our parking lot for a full month now. Took more than one set of jumper cables to get that heap going.
Mikill
So I'm down here in Texas and a truck from Canada finds it's way down here and needs a fuel tank. So I dive in and start working and I forgot how things like to rust up north and let me tell you I had a few words for Canada while under this rusted POS. Nothing personal towards anyone from Canada but now I know what you all have to deal with daily and I'm glad trucks down here don't get rusted like they do up north. Keith Browning
We have a few openings in our shop if you are interested. PB Blaster and the torch are my two besetest friends.

It's so refreshing to see a post like this. I guess, this post also illustrates perfectly why I absolutely LOVE working on any vehicle that makes its way onto my doorstep from the good old U.S. of A. Whenever I get one coming in for whatever repair, my poductivity increases almost tenfold. And the best part of all, the customers are usually very generous in the tipping department. Is this a U.S. custom that I'm unaware of? By the way, do you guys in the South have torches in your shop? If so, how often do they get used? Mikill
Yeah we have torches and they get used more on 6.4 body bolts but rarely on rusted nuts and bolts. The PB blaster got used alot today along with the torch.
