IDS Won't Recognize PCM

Well gents, I have one that came knocking on our doorstep today. The CEL is on (I'm assuming it's going to be yet another P164A like I've been reading everywhere). When I went to start a session with IDS, it loaded up fine (bar graph and all), but was unable to read the PCM. Customer was in a bit of a hurry and since no driveability symptoms were present he had to leave. Just curious if anyone else has had one in like this?

Used to be that the PCM was the "gateway" module. Now the "gateway" is the body control module (used to be the SJB but if we can rename something and cause mass confusion.... why not?).

This is why the IDS went through the initialization procedure - you'll have to start checking the HS CAN for the no comm concern. FWIW, the PC is a termination module.

Section 418-00 has a symptom chart that directs you to PPT a for your concern.

Thanks Jim. I didn't actually spend too much time digging into this one (I've been getting swamped at work lately with all these new customers I've never seen before). I was just curious to see if anyone else was experiencing this. All I do know is, it is NOT a V-ref short type no communication issue, just by virtue of the fact the truck has ZERO driveability issues and that it does initialize when you attempt to start a session.

Since the PCM is a termination module, you should be able to get a pretty definitive idea of what direction you are going by probing the HS CAN terminals at the DLC with the key off. You should see about 60ish ohms if all is well with the hi and low HS CAN buss.

I ran into this early on with a faulty ABS module which caused communication failure with several modules, the ABS, PCM and the RCM. I think the 2011's are "a little different."

The 2011s are a "little different"???? That could well be one of the shining understatements of the year...

Well, maybe.

For one, I have had very few come in for repairs. In prior new model releases with new engines a year into production there were vivid signs of problems on the horizon.

Second, I have "fixed" two 2011's simply by disconnecting all modules and plugging them all back in. Then there is the parameter reset function...
