quicksix
did a forum search on this didnt really find anything..im getting pretty large carbon chunks clogging up the egr valve this e series has a new egr cooler and oil cooler and the intake was completely cleaned the vehicle goes about 300 miles and then limps back with "diesel diamonds" stuck in the egr valve...oh it also has the baffle kit installed if it makes a difference
joshbuys
Was the intake THOROUGHLY cleaned when replacing the coolers. I've seen trucks with so much carbon in them it was ridiculous! I usually set the intake in our parts washer for a couple hours and then take it back and hit it with the pressure washer to make sure all the carbon is blown out. almost looks like a new manifold! Keith Browning
I doubt that there will be sufficient carbon buildup in 300 miles to create enough carbon that will break off into chunks. Thoroughly cleaning a 6.0L intake manifold actually requires being hot tanked. You cannot effectively "scrape" out the EGR port and typical parts washers can not remove carbon sufficiently. In my shop we have come to the point that where there is a certain amount of carbon the manifold gets sent out for hot tank cleaning. We have obtained a spare manifold which allows us to always have a fresh one on hand instead of waiting two days to get the manifold back which will hold the job up sometimes tying up a bay in the process. quicksix
thanks for the feed back guys.. i left the intake soaking in the parts washer for 2 days used a round wire brush and blew it out at this point im just gonna throw another intake on it
Keith Browning
at this point im just gonna throw another intake on it Then take the manifild to a local machine shop that can hot tank it and set it aside for the next one you have a problem with or have apert. That is an EXCELLENT idea that I may start doing myself, after having two E-Series trucks tying up my bay for more than three days at a time for this very issue. Jeff Clyde
Almost all of our intakes get sent out to the local rad shop, come back in 1/2 day ( in most cases ), spotless. We have a spare intakes, and CAC's rotating through at all times. Nothing better than being able to avoid down time due to sublets.

Hi Jim I like to bust on the guys that pull up to the shop. When they're bs'ing with the boss or whoever they came to talk to; I'll say "Is it 70 below out there? Why do you leave your stinkbox running out there? I like to breathe, you know." and I walk away. Always makes for an interesting expression on their face.
