Keith Browning
Holy Mother Nature having a PMS fit Batman! First the ground shakes and now a Cat 2 hurricane? WTF? Maybe I will go crabbing at Sandy Hook on Saturday...

Jim Warman
I can empathize... what didn't burn down in May very nearly floated away in June and July... The weather turned scorching (for Slave Lake) and now we are having blue green algae blooms in many lakes. Our local river (and lake) are still up above their normal banks by a couple of feet. FWIW, blue green algae is toxic... don't swim in the water, don't drink the water and don't eat fish caught in the water. This shit just doesn't end.... joshbuys
I was evacuated from my home on Tuesday (actually my wife and kids were, I was at work at the time) around 1:30 pm, due to a propane tanker rail car (filled with 29,000 gallons of propane) that caught fire about a half mile from my home, we weren't aloud back in until midnight last night (we didn't come home until today). http://www.news10.net/news/local/story.aspx?storyid=151424

Jim Warman
Isn't that initial realization that your life is now out of your control...... "invigorating" would be a parody of any word I might actually use... Thankfully, you are back at home. Even today, I am faced with "am I in the right town" syndrome. I stop at an intersection and there might be one house I recognize amongst a field of empty lots. It doesn't take a lot of thought to understand where I am. I might stop at an intersection that doesn't look like anything I remember (and you must remember that heavy equipment is busy changing our landscape on a daily basis) and I fucking near have to pull a map out to determine where I am. This is the kind of stuff that should teach us all that we have a tenuous foothold on this planet... and if we piss Maw Nature off bad enough, she will tell us exactly how unimportant we are.... I thank the supreme being of your choice for the safety of you and your family.
Keith Browning
Absolutely Jim. With these two "events" we are experiencing here on the east coast it conjures up images of devastation in Haiti... California, Hurricane Catrina... While what I have experienced is minor it does make you think. I live approximately 40 miles due west of New York City and the Atlantic coast. Far enough and high enough for tidal surge to not be of any concern but but we are being told that this time the wind and rain is something to be prepared for. Up to a FOOT of rain and 80 to 100 MPH winds. Not exactly kite flying weather. I have friends that live FEET from the Shark River inlet, Barnegat Bay and the beach. I hope they have homes worth returning to after this blows by. The thing is, here in NJ we are simply not used to this shit nor are we prepared for earthquakes and hurricanes... nor forest fires or rolling fuel bombs for that matter! Alex Bruene
My outlaws are heading to Myrtle Beach this morning with intentions of arriving around noon tomorrow. Hopefully Irene doesn't decide to make a slight left!
joshbuys
Praying y'all are safe over there on the Eastern Seaboard! I hate seeing the suffering these horrific natural disasters impose on people! I've been very lucky throughout my life in not being personally affected by things like this, but I have often witnessed the damage it does to the lives of people I've known, I've volunteered many hours helping at shelters and with clean up after these things, and seeing the people that have lost everything just wrenches my heart! Makes me remember what I learned in Boy Scouts, ALWAYS BE PREPARED! 72 hour kits are an awesome thing! Stuff enough clothing and food (non-perishable) along with a few other hygiene items and necessities into a backpack to last you 3 days, do this for each member of your family, and keep it accessible at all times, perhaps have a second one in your car (in case you're not home or unable to get home should something happen). I was not prepared this week when we had to evacuate, I had gotten relaxed in that my family has not been affected by something like this for so long, luckily I was able to get home after work and get the necessities for my family that we needed for 2 days of not being allowed home, I'm getting kits pieced together for myself, my wife and all 3 of our children, I'm hoping I never need them, but I don't ever want to be caught needing them and not have them again!
