Hard Drive Failure

My HDD failed on Saturday night on my main PC... the one where all the magic happens. Fortunately I was able to get the PC to boot and I spent part of Sunday backing up my data. This evening I installed a new drive and began reloading everything. Uhhhg!

This is going to take me days Posted Image

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooo. I bet you were sweatin bullets on that deal. I know I would have been. My laptop wouldn't fire up a couple of months ago and I thought I was going to lose all my pics. That's nothing compared to what you are dealing with!!!!

Time to get a "ghost" drive IMHO.

My computer savvy brother in law swears by them. He says most people don't think about getting one till they have a HD failure. I am one of those people......luckily I haven't had one fail...yet. I mainly back up photos onto DVD's. Everything else on my home computer can be reloaded anyways.

Wow, it has been a while since I have heard mention of a ghost drive. The popular thing now is the back up services like Carbonite which encript and store your data off premesis. For some reason I still am not sure about having my data under someone else's care but I am warming up to the idea. I just figured out my McAfee comes with 1 Gig of back up. I might set that up along with my external hard drive which I do use fo back ups but I have to do it manually. I havent in like 6 months so I was sweating this at first for sure. Thankfully I was able to get my sysrem to boot and recover my data... this time.

Ghost huh? Hmmm.

The nice thing about a ghost drive is you don't have to wait while all your software installs, so you can go online to download all your backed up data, so you can get back on track. You just boot off the ghost drive, get back to work and repair then original drive in the background.

The best part about doing your own back ups and storing them off site is two fold.

First, if (God forbid) a middle east insurgent were to fly a Piper Cub laden with convenience store fireworks into the side of your home (or something more mundane like having a forest fire sweep through your town), you will have a reasonably accessable copy of your data available. This data is under your control according to a security level of your choice.

Allowing someone else to store your data for you..... there are times I have a time convincing myself I can trust people that live around me... trusting a complete stranger is quite another thing... trusting a complete stranger to do stuff for free?

Drug pushers will give you the first few "hits" for free... once you are hooked.... well, that's what Mastercard is for...

Yes, I'm a curmudgeon.

See I have multiple back ups of all kinds of stuff. Website stuff is current and loaded on a server so that is not a problem though I have copies of everything I have published over the last 6 years. Do I need it all? No, probably not but I cant bring myself to delete it. Financial stuff I back up on a disk and shove into my safe. I just took advantage of McAfee's encrypted back up service for my email, Internet favs and such. Programs, simply require re-installing. I ha a fun time searching my house for all of the carious disks. They are now in a zip-lock bag and are also in my safe where I can find them again. Dammit!

I am still reloading. DAMMIT!
