CP Diag

The thing with diesels is there is no set time for diagnosis. We charge for what we do to get the thing diagnosed. If you have access to Ford SLTS you can use them as a guide and multiply by 1.5. Mitchell has most of the times listed, you just need to go looking for them because they are scattered around depending on the system you are testing.

As far as 6L HPOP diagnosis goes, we usually start by doing a simple air check on the IPR to see if it is functioning, check base oil pressure, then go onto valve cover removal and further testing from there. Charge what you think is appropriate for the air test depending on how far you get into it.

Tell the customer that flat rating diesel diagnosis sometimes can't be done.

Our dealership charges 1 hour for a "diag", which to me translates to, connect IDS and check for DTCs. Anything that is over and above that is extra, at my discretion of course.

Diesel diagnosis should start at 2 hours. All the labor guides I've ever seen have it at that time. I charge an additional 2 hours for air testing plus any necessary access (valve covers, etc) in case I can't come to a conclusion without tearing in to it.

Thanks guys, now to get this through managements head- I just got a 2 hour backflag on a standpipe job on a 6Liter that woudn't have happend if i'd have got more that .5 for diag.

The only thing .5 covers is a quick test and clear codes. Hope things work out for ya. There is nothing worse than management that screws you on diagnosis time. You may want to have "said management" go on a diagnosis walk through with you. After sitting watching for over an hour they may get the point.

Good Luck.

I would open and close a hood for a quick visual for 0.5.

I really can't believe any management has the nerve to backflag a good technician. The whole idea pisses me off pretty badly. You're basically being told, we know you worked but we're not paying you for it.

I am flat rate but I've never been back flagged a tenth in my entire life. If it did happen I doubt I'd be doing this any longer.

For us out here in AZ its always been about 1.0-1.5hrs at the most. Once in a while if we had a real pita to diag we could swing selling more time but it was rare. You had better be on your game with a 6.0 diag to make it with a CP job

As for backflags I have had more lost dollars due to management getting involved and jewing me out of justified labor time it was not even funny. One of the biggest reasons I left and the best part is they dont understand why all their good techs where leaving them Posted Image

At my shop 1.5 is typically the normal basic diagnostic charge for diesel driveability. THis is enough time to road test and verify the concern, do the pre-checks and inspections, run self tests, look at PID's and an initial fuel pressure test - as required. Additional diagnostic time is requested as needed.
