6.7L FEAD Belt Routing

I had an interesting one towed in yesterday. The truck "threw" the FEAD belt but it was GONE without a trace... except for the melted rubber pressed into all of the pulley grooves. Posted Image I found nothing seized, nothing mis-aligned or out of place in any way. Thought this was strange. Posted Image

 

I put a water pump in this truck several weeks ago. Did coolant damage the belt, maybe cause it to slip and burn up? Probably not. Then I ran OASIS and came across TSB 12-1-13. It seems that the belt can be routed above, OR below the upper idler pulley. These double-sided belts can confuse you!

 

Above is correct, below is not so don't be complacent about the routing. Since there is no routing diagram under the hood check the WSM until you are absolutely familiar with the routing.

 

Since the belt is missing on this truck I can't say I did this for sure but it certainly looks suspect. We learn by our mistakes. I share this so you can learn from this too... and not the hard way.

Kenny just finished a crank pulley job and nearly made the above/below mistake. Looking from above (as if you were working on it) 'below' looks OK. From the (right) side, 'below' begins to look odd.

 

Word to the wise, the crank pulley bolts are 18mm 12 point from the look of it.

Just 1 more socket I had to to go dig out of my collection of sockets I didn't think I would ever use.

I did the same thing with the fead belt.....I did a job where I ghad to take the belt off and when I put it back on I screwed up the routing. The truck came back in for a noise a few days later. When I opened the hood I found rubber chunks everywhere just like Keith said

Luckily, I ran into a failed belt due to improper routing prior to every having to remove one, or I'm sure I would have done the same thing. On a side note, last week I saw my first 6.7 with a FEAD driven PTO (lucky it's taken so long, I suppose)... Either way, the belt was only ribbed on one side and some of the idler pulleys were replaced with smooth pulleys. I wonder if that's going to have any effect on the system?

Yeah screw those belt drive pto/air setups.

 

My understanding for the dual ribbed was the amount of HP it took to drive the fan at 100% duty cycle along with everything else on the FEAD system required enough "traction" to keep the belt from slipping. Wonder if converting it will cause slipping?
