Anybody ever come across this? I have seen a couple of trucks doing this, just not as bad. It sounds like a valve in the fuel system chattering and possibly resonating at the secondary filter. It could even be the filter. Just a guess.

Anybody?

See it lot up here in the sticks. All the do-it-yourselfers don't get the primary fuel filter bowl tight. If it's backed off just a smidge it will make funky noises in the fuel system.

There's a message about it on FMC.

SOME 2011-2012 F-SUPERDUTY VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A 6.7L DIESEL ENGINE MAYEXHIBIT A SLIGHT VIBRATION AND/OR BUZZING OR GROWLING-TYPE NOISE FROM THE DFCM AT TIMES WHEN OPERATING WITH THE FUEL TANK AT 1/4 LEVEL OR BELOW. THIS CONCERN SHOULD BE CONSIDERED A NORMAL CHARACTERISTIC AND IS DUE TO A SLIGHT AMOUNT OF AIR WHICH MAY ENTER THE FUEL SYSTEM DURING LOWER FUEL LEVEL CONDITIONS. NO REPAIRS SHOULD BE ATTEMPTED. FUEL SYSTEM AND VEHICLE DURABILITY, AS WELL AS VEHICLE DRIVEABILITY AND FUEL RANGE, ARE NOT AFFECTED

EFFECTIVE DATE: 09-DECEMBER-2011

This does not fit the description exactly but I wonder if it is like I suspect and it is resonating in the syste... still looking for a referance to filter installation...

I think it was an ssm. I remember seeing it, But as you said, its gone.

I have heard the noise referenced ( or what I assumed hey are meaning) in the ssm about being below 1/4 tank. Quite anoying.

Honestly, IMHO, if these guys are letting the fuel level get below 1/4, they deserve to put up with the noise. Too much can happen on low fuel levels.

The truck in the video had an Airdog installed which had a problem that ultimately caused a restriction. Apparently the blown fuse from that install also disabled the low fuel pressure warning switch and the fuel restriction went un-noticed.

This the SSM I saw:

INDICATE THAT AIR IS ENTERING THE SYSTEM THROUGH THE FILTER BOWL SEAL OR DRAIN.

THE FILTER BOWL SEAL IS ON THE INLET SIDE OF THE DFCM AND CAN PROVIDE A PATH FOR

THE FILTER BOWL SEAL WITH CLEAN DIESEL FUEL OR CLEAN ENGINE OIL TO PREVENT SEAL

One would have to tell me why replacing the secondary filter (a second time) cures the condition. I admit that I haven't taken the time to inspect the primary filter, but the concern has been cured without touching it.

Yes, I have seen this condition SEVERAL times - once after the filters were replaced in our shop.

Here's a new one. I have also attached the Job Aid file

6.7L DIESEL FUEL CONDITIONING MODULE (DFCM) ARE BEING REPLACED DUE TO NOISE. ENGINEERING REVIEW FOUND THAT DFCM NOISE IS NOT TYPICALLY A CONCERN WITH THE DFCM BUT A RESULT OF AIR INGRESS OR RESTRICTIONS IN THE SYSTEM. A 6.7L DFCM NOISE/REPAIR JOB AID IS AVAILABLE ON PTS TO ASSIST WITH IDENTIFYING THE MOST COMMON SOURCES OF AIR INGRESS OR RESTRICTIONS IN THE SYSTEM. THIS JOB AID ALSO CONTAINS TIPS FOR FUEL FILTER REPLACEMENT AND FUEL SYSTEM BLEEDING.

Interesting. I have always cycled the crap out of the pump after changing fuel filters or working on the fuel system on anything diesel. I love when the lube kid hits the key right after changing the filters and cant figure out why it wont start Posted Image

That should be stuck to every lube kids forehead

Had one of these on Thursday. Drilling truck was trailered in with 105 000 km on the clock and an original secondary filter (triple pipe not dual) that shooting fuel like a geyser at key on.

Did both filters. Got the primary screwed back all the way - right against the 'stop' and where the wiring pigtail will just perfectly line up with the sensor away from the framerail.

Cycled 6 times for 30 seconds each before cranking. Was good - no noise. Hauled it out and it started to whine in the parking lot. Another 6 or 7 key cycles before the next start killed the whine.

I've got one right now that our Quick Lane did fuel filters and it has the noise. The noise DID go away aftger I replaced the secondary filter, but after doing a really good inspection I noticed that they over-tightened the primary fuel filter cap. After idling for 10 minutes the noise started to come back again.

I have had other ones where replacing the secondary filter took cake of it and one where replacing the O-ring for the primary filter fixed it. As many fuel filters I've done on these I've never had a problem. All the ones that come in with a noise were recently in our Quick Lane.

Not to hijack a thread but I think Quick Lane does more damage than good.

I wonder how many times the primary filter cap o-ring does not get replaced It's kinda out of sight and outta mind. I still see 6.0L oil filter caps with well aged flat o-rings.

There's no excuse for this type of crap to go on at all. Given the fact that every filter comes with a new o-ring, I can't see why anyone would be too lazy to change it out. That's just like removing the new rubber gasket from a new spin on style oil filter and reusing the oil rubber ring in my opinion.

Now, when upselling a new oil filter cap (which I'm sure many of us have had to) due to the vehicle having one of those garbage aftermarket oil filters, sure we're going to have an extra oil filter o-ring to put in our box, since both the new filter and cap both come with them leaving one extra.

And when they come in leaking oil all over the place and you tell the guy the filter oring is leaking, you get a good laugh when the guy replies "But I just changed my oil filter not to long ago!"
