Cummins INSITE

Anyone here work on Cummins engines in Ford trucks? Well. I was thrown into the fire today... and of course we have no Cummins tools what so ever including the scan tool. So I have downloaded INSITE but don't have a registration key yet... nor do I have the vehicle interface module and cables anyway.

Any advice before I get rolling here? Posted Image

Try hooking up whatever program (MD?) you use for LCFs and talk to it. Because you're on J1708 protocol which is an SAE standard, the codes you read will "probably" be right. You can look at data, most of it will be correct but I wouldn't rely on it. I have done this in the past successfully, but bidirectional controls won't work. This is a band-aid until you get your Insite key.

The comm box you're using for MD will likely work for Insite. It's all RP1210B compliant.

Good Luck!

I did have MD truck on it and I was able to pull two codes but I have no self test capabilities or recalibration capability with MD. I need the Cummins software for sure. Like you said, I could probably get away with the IC4 cable temporarily. I am still waiting on a software key.

Prior to having INSITE, I used to read Cummins DTCs with MD truck and an IC-4 cable. If you get INSITE, you have to get the full subscription if you want to do anything. If you only get basic, you can't change parameters, reprogram or even clear DTCs. We still use the INLINE-5 interface... I don't even know if there is anything newer out there.

Alex, I was looking at the necessary equipment and I saw references to the INLINE 4 and 5 interfaces however they are no longer available as the INLINE-6 is now out. This is what we are trying to buy... of course it's on backorder.

We have tested an inline 6 for cummins and worked pretty well. Getting the adapters is not a quick process from what I have experienced. +1 on the training. . . . if it is warranty they will not pay unless a certified technician works on it. I dont see to many f-series chassis but plenty of mid-range. Hopefully you will get your in-line soon. Will help if I can

Well it looks like anything that MD truck displayed was completely inaccurate. The codes were totally wrong.

We had a tech from our Oshkosh store come over and run some tests. Diagnosis: bad EGR valve and a plugged DPF.

Now we are learning about ordering parts.

Then I assume we will learn about warranty... and the training we know about but have failed to do anything about. Posted Image

First you need to get the "Cummins Virtual College"... a bunch of CDs that you do on your home computer to get prerequisites for school... Then the dreaded "BETT (Basic Electrical Theory and Troubleshooting)"... a snoozer course of everything we learned in high-school... then you get to go on and learn some really cool chit!

Any 2007 and newer cummins engine (DPF Engines) will require the inline 5 or 6. They work on a 1939 data link. The IC4 is not a very stable com box when working with 1939 data links. MD will not display the correct fault info on anything but IH engines, it is very hit or miss. For my personal diag laptop I run the Nexiq USB link. It works on everything and does everything for every bit of software that I have used it on. Some com box's will work but don't let you program/reflash etc. You should be able to call your local distributor and get a reg. key right over the phone. They will ask you for your PC ID which can be found in the pull down menus in insite. If I remember correctly, you can use insite as a read only device; this will allow you to read fault codes and data. Insite is very user friendly as far as running test, changing parameters etc. Data rate is slow imo. Just remember when selecting a com box at the bottom of the screen - pre 2007 non dpf are 1708 and 2007 and newer are 1939 com communications.

Keith, you can buy the interface modules that come with the 6 an 9 pin cables through your local Mac Tools Distributor. They are J-Pro Noregon adapters and will work with the Insite program. All of us Mac guys sell them. You need the DLA+ adapter with a Mac part number of NO512208 or a Noregon adaptor with a part number of 12208. Here is a link for the part:

Our price up here is $1403.99. Not sure what it will be down there for you. Hope that helps.

Alex, my manager is clueless at this point. We have heard about videos but not any CD's. Are these the courses that we take? Do these go with the tests on-line?

We have a giant binder of CDs that I had to complete prior to getting sent to school for the first time. I'll get a picture of it when I'm at work tomorrow. Mind you, this was about 5 or 6 years ago, so I'm not sure if that's still the case. I do still get update courses on CD.

Yes sir, I believe so. You get the virtual college cds. Then go to quickserve online and access the training portion and download a smart program guide and it will prompt you to put a certain cd number in to acess the part you need. the first group you have to complet is BETT( basic I mean BASIC electrical) and than you can go on to the engine courses you need. I would contact your local cummins distributor and they should be able to help you get set up.

That is an understatement! I learned OHMs law in grade 9... or maybe even before that, having to do that all over again is ass. The first in class I did for Cummins was INSITE and BETT... 2.5 days of learning INSITE and 2.5 days of Basic Electrical Theory and Troubleshooting... Posted Image

  • 2 weeks later...

Well on Friday I was handed a binder with something like 38 CD's in it with two or more courses on each. I have begun the Basic Electrical, then on to the INSITE training then two mid-range engines. Whoopie!

And Alex? Would you change that God damn avatar already! Posted Image

8 courses down... 41 to go. Uhhhg. These SUCK. There is a lot of really great information in them but the presentation kills you. I also find some of the test questions a bit obscure.

When I am finished I will be granted the privilege of going to an actual training class. Posted Image

I really hated doing those courses... Probably because I did them at home before going to bed, and was falling asleep while doing them... There is good info, that's for sure!

Well our INLINE-6 finally arrived. Whoo hoo. Now it's all bout getting the INSITE software set up and unlocked. Holy Christ you would think you were dealing with the government the way they make the process so drawn out and difficult.

As for the Virtual College, I am past the halfway point. Not sure what I have actually leaned. After about 5 minutes it starts to sound like the teacher in the Peanuts cartoons - wha wa wa wha wha waaaa. Posted Image
