Keith Browning
I was asked a question that I don't know the answer to nor can I find one. What is the reason for/purpose for using spacers on exhaust manifold bolts?
Bruce Amacker
Adding a spacer gives more physical length to the stud/bolt which translates to more clamping stretch. This allows more "give" or tolerance of the expansion and contraction present during heat cycles thus preventing the bolt from coming loose, allowing the gasket to leak, or snapping off from overstretch. Maybe the 4.6/5.4 need bigger spacers?
Keith Browning
Thank you Mr.A. I was thinking it was something like that... but then I thought we still see broken bolts on the diesels too!
Matt Saunoras
do you guys see a lot on the 6.0s? I've only ever run across one.
Keith Browning
do you guys see a lot on the 6.0s? I've only ever run across one. Actually not many. If I see a broken manifold bolt on one it more than likely has rusted to the point of breaking or snapped trying to remove it.
blown99
Not on the 6.0's, I see them on the 7.3 engines, more so on the old body style.
