Keith Browning
I know what you are thinking. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/crybaby2.gif No, that's not it. 2006 CF/LCF moaning from PS pump and a new pump doesn't fix it! Bad pumps? Funky valve in the booster? Also hearing a loud hiss/gurgling when turning the wheel intermittently after warm up. I am afraid to throw another pump in this truck and not fix it. Is anyone else seeing this? We have a few of these trucks in the lot that make this same noise and I would hate to think its normal!
Cetane
We dont have any of these trucks but I know there havent been very many complaints(including yours). The best solution I saw was to vacuum down the system while turning the wheel back and forth and be sure you are using clean MERCON fluid to refill. I know, real big help....... Keith Browning
Thanx. I did the vacuum to the system trick but it did not seem to change anything. I drove the truck twice and then had my manager drive it who seemed to indicate that it wasn't as bad as I was describing it... suggested that it might be improving on it's own working out the air by letting it sit and then driving it. Maybe. I guess the customer will let us know. If it were my truck I would not be satisfied. I can understand a little fluid noise when steering or braking hard but the system just should not moan. Keith Browning
Well, from driving the new trucks on the lot during the PDI I still say most of them do this and it's normal for the truck. I still think it's not right and should not make noise.
ktmlew
They undoubtably will come-out with a new pressure line or cooler to correct this concern. Just no way of knowing when?
Jim Warman
Had a Windstar some time ago with PS noise. There was a TSB pointing to a new pressure hose with a mufler in it (a muffler? in a PS hose?)... rriiiggghhhtt... The hose didn't fix squat but it was spendy and time consuming to do. To try and avoid having egg on our collective face, I grasped at a straw,,, flushed the system and installed synthetic ATF along with the vacuum bleed.... Net result... one happy customer and one happy SM... (depending on the day, that could be Service Manager or sado-masochist...).
Keith Browning
It has been nearly three years since I started this topic and I just have to resurrect it. I cannot believe that there have not been many complaints about the power steering/brake groaning these trucks exhibit. Some are quiet and some are ridiculous. I currently have one that the usual P/S groan is actually not bad at all BUT this truck makes a chattering noise during some turns. I am really not sure where to go with it. I contacted the Hot Line (Hi Guys!) and I got a glazed over response - I may not have adequately described this as above and beyond the usual noise. So once again I defer to you Gents for any known concerns or successful repairs! Anyone? Buhler? Buhler? Buhler?
Tony302600
I will say that BG's power steerig fluid (which they claim has a lot more lubricity than mercon) actually works and get's rid of that dreaded P/S Groan/Moan. I've fixed quite a few with it.
Alex Bruene
I've only ever had one person complain about it. Hotline had me replace the gear and pump, and guess what... no difference... They then continued to say it was a characteristic of the cab over design /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/boink3.gif, and to compare to like unit... yada, yada, yada... LARRY BRUDZYNSKI
Keith you may try wrapping a rag around the front cab pivots and the rear cab mounts. Sounds goofy but back in the day we experienced a phantom groaning on 94-96 Accords turned out to be hood hinges. We wrapped the shop rags around the hinge and test drove groaning disappeared. DamageINC
WE've had a few hard-to-fix power steering noises that were cured by replacing the fluid with Mercon V. The additive friction modifiers in the fluid took all the noise right of of the system, and none have come back with any other steering noise issues since.
