batmantech
I thought you all might have some input on this subject. My wife teaches and is looking for an external hard drive to back up all her lesson plans, smartboard, video etc. Any ideas or thoughts? Keith Browning
Depending on how much data she needs to back up a large capacity thumb drive might be best. I do have an external hard drive that I use to back up selected folders and files and it works well. The off-site backup services seem like a good deal as well and reasonable priced. If this data is really important that might be the best option of all.
Jim Warman
+ 1 on the thumb drive. I carry one in my pocket - 16 gigs. Has about 3 or 4 hours of my favourite tunes, various manuals and forms, my bookmarks, a couple of versions of IDS and some updates that need to be deleted, jokes, a copy of my address book and, of course, pictures of the grandbaby... and there is room to spare. And they are CHEAP. I never have to look for a wall outlet, it fits in my pocket and it has, so far, survived three trips through the heavy duty wash and rinse cycles. FWIW, the John Bean wheel aligner we purchased last year has no disc drives with removable media. All programming is done through the USB ports. Bruce Amacker
I'm all for USB drives- I have several of them from small to 32g, but I still would recommend at least one external USB HD of 100G to 1TB. I have several of those, too. I look for "portable" drives that power direct from the USB and all use the same type of cable. I hate components that are tied to an oddball cable..... PS Some of my cars have stereos that play music from USB drives- it's awesome.
batmantech
She is currently using multiple thumb drives I think she is concerend about those failing unexpectedly. She has heard that can happen and now wants a more secure option.
Bruce Amacker
Anything can fail so multiples is the answer. Because my digital information (books and training stuff) is my life, I have multiple backups on multiple HDs, both on-site and two offsite locations. I would be royally screwed if all of my backups were to fail. It would literally be 15 years of works gone.....
