Hurricane Sandy

For those of you who don't know, I live in New Jersey where hurricane Sandy is about to clobber a region that is not set up for or used to such a natural disaster. I am far enough west from the coast where things should not be too bad but we are being warned this storm is going to cause major problems. As long as the power stays on I should do okay. Wish us luck! Posted Image

Yeah, I just moved to an hour from the coast and we are feeling the wind and rain effects.

The last time a hurricane hit NJ (Irene) it caused about 10 billion in damage to Vermont. Glad we aren't there anymore. It's suppose to hit a cold front and become a winter storm. Hope it doesn't put you guys in the dark up there.

Dark doesn't bother me as much as water. No power.... no sump pumps.... no pumps, there goes about 30k in hvac and other appliances, plus a ton of woodworking tools and stuff.... UGH.

I hope there isn't too much rain from this..

I feel your pain, Kieth - our winter came two weeks early this year.

Flashlight batteries, candles and bottled water are your friends. A genset doesn't hurt, either.

Best of luck.

Oh goodie! I am in the "Hit the liquor stores" bubble. Posted Image

If I lose power my basement will get water.

There ain't a generator, D-cell or candle on the shelves anywhere and haven't been for days. I have some stuff but if power goes out for an extended time I am screwed. time to start moving stupp off the floor downstairs...

On the bright side there is a gentle breeze developing outside and I have plenty of vodka.

I need to hit my head on the wall. I put off spending the money for the standby natural gas powered whole house generator. Damn.

Already have done the pickup all the stuff that can't get wet, cleaned the gutters (eavestroughs for those north of the border) twice and pulled out the sump lines to the back of the yard.

Fred, I feel your pain. I was watching my neighbor clean his gutters yesterday... he was back on the roof this morning when I came home from church and I made the mistake of looking up to my roof. I spent 4 hours cleaning all of my gutters that were 50% packed with leaves and all but one downspout were clogged. I hate being on the roof but considering the circumstances I am glad I had time and sufficiently good weather. Only problem was I pulled one downspout out of the gutter and it's not a quick fix. At least it flows now! Posted Image Forgive me, I need to laugh a little.

I've got a flight to Vegas Tuesday morning, and my wife flies out Wednesday morning. Anyone taking bets on whether the flights even exist? Cleveland has been hammered with heavy winds and rain all day today, with plenty of flight cancellations already.

Winds are picking up, the power flickered around 9:30 this morning with not much going on weather wise. I thought that was a bad sign.

Still battening down the hatches! Posted Image I keep finding things that need to be taken care of.

Shits getting pretty rough around here. The lights flicker constantly and there is a howling from the trees. Fortunately we haven't gotten too much rain up till now. Next few hours will be rough with the wind. Glad I am not more south of here!!!!

The fucking wind here is unreal- stronger than I have ever seen. Officially it's 45/65 but a meteorologist measured it at 95m gusts downtown. It's loud as hell, the proverbial freight train, and we're 400 miles from the coast. Lights flicker regularly but are still on. We just had a complete new roof installed a few months ago due to wind damage.....

Yes, it's a giant mess toward the coast and I bet Keith is on edge. I hope all is well at his house. Cleveland got some of the highest steady winds we've ever seen for a long period, resulting in uprooted trees (two in our yard) and power outages, but my power stayed on. Schools and a lot of businesses are closed. Still very windy but it has slowed down, like in the 30-40 steady plus gusts. Both my and my wife's flights were canceled so we're staying home and watching the weather. The neighbor had big water problems but so far we're OK there. MIL is 85 at home with no power by herself. I've seen worse but not for a long time, and usually not without snow. I think the "eye" is about 150-200m east of us right now, heading kind of toward us but will probably veer north. I'm surprised how much grief this has caused Cleveland being we're so far inland.

Edit- it's just raining hard now without high winds. Judging by the pictures I see on TV, Ohio got off easy. I hope Keith and all of the other guys here on the east coast got off as well as I did. Both of our phone land lines are out.

Mess is right! The entire Jersey coast is destroyed, the NJ Turnpike is totally shut down and Manhattan has no power either. Fortunately my Inlaws have power an lent us their generator which is big enough to run the fridge an the sump pump and charge our phones. I am getting a crash course in using a smart phone - this iPhone is amazing! Anyway, we came out of this okay so far. Many people lost everything, homes and businesses destroyed and deaths are being reported. Posted Image We are hearing it may be one or two weeks before power is restored in my area.

If you want gas anywhere in the eastern 2/3 of the state there are lines miles long. Fuel deliveries are far and few at the moment... but there are a a lot of fuel stations with fuel sitting in the tanks with no power to pump it. Keeping a keen eye on those! Posted Image Fortunately I have two full tanks in our cars but will need some eventually. There are pockets of sanity though. I was in a supermarket yesterday with plenty of food on the shelves and boxes of restock items in the isles.

I just got power back this evening. Lost it Monday at 6:45pm, it came on, oddly at 6:45. The power in most of our area, I found out, was deliberately shut off once the poop hit the fan.

I suffered NO house damage, and with only 2.5 inches of rain here, no water at all. Luckily.

I had 1 50' 20" diameter oak branch come down at the rear of my yard, and another 150' tall oak lost a third of itself, the huge branches are stuck in midair, hanging in other trees. I won't walk under those puppies.

I just saw some of the pics of the shore and Raritan bay front in Monmouth county, holy shit!

I haven't been at work all week either, no power there, and from what I've been told, there's no direct route to the town I route in, as there are/were too many trees down to access the town.

Now, hopefully I can get gas, so I can continue to clean my yard and fill the vehicles.

They were gouging at $24/gallon in our area early this week.
