I have an 05 6.0 with 125k on the clock with no heat at idle. The cust has been workking on this him self and in the last year has replaced radiator, heater core and as of 2 weeks ago thermostat. During my road test I can only get engine up to 180 F and EOT is at 212F. At idle no heat rev engine to 3k and heat starts to come in. I removed coolant hose at hot water valve and started engine, and the coolant flowing from hose was very weak. I removed water pump for inspection and found the pump to be fine but there is a groove worn in the front cover where the water pump fin would be. Is that enough to cause low coolant flow at idle? Also I checked for headgasket failure with a pressure gauge at degas bottle while under WOT, all good there. also truck has egr cooler deleted. thanks.

I would be very interested in knowing the fix for yours. I've been toying with a late-build '04 as well for almost the exact same symptom you've described. On mine, I just replaced the EGR and oil coolers just over a year ago. The coolant degas bottle was slightly swelled a little. But like yours, I'm getting relatively cool ECT temps (about 177*F) and high EOT temps (above 200*F and peaked at 230*F during road test on highway). Same thing too, takes forever to warm up. Heat diminshes when the engine is idling and then blows warm off idle. Mine is a plow truck too.

I would be tempted to drain some coolant out of the block and check the temp. If that coolant is higher that your ECT reading I would most definitely suspect flow issues.

My personal truck had cracked head at #7 injector cup. Exact same symptom. It would build excess pressure in degas bottle only after a high boost run. Also had coolant collecting in fuel pump module setting water in fuel light. Ran fine, No missfire, No codes, No smoke
