joshbuys Posted March 9, 2013 Share Posted March 9, 2013 About a month and a half ago this truck came in, approximately 194000 miles - truck is towed in - engine smoked A LOT and then locked up on the freeway. Found a hole in the side of the block, valve to piston contact on 5 cylinders, etc, etc, replaced long block, no big deal right.... Last Friday this truck comes back in, approximately 197000 miles, complaining about an engine vibration between 2800 and 3200 rpm. Hooked up the MTS4000, measured all the pulleys, found a first order vibration coming from the A/C compressor, a 3rd order vibration from the engine, and a 4th order vibration from the engine. removed the serpentine belt - vibration is gone. Inspected the A/C pulley and found the bearing is shot. replaced the A/C pulley and clutch. Retest - much better, released to customer on Monday. Truck comes back Wednesday morning, a vibration is still present under heavy load, very noticeable when pulling a trailer up a hill. Hooked up MTS4000 again and found a 3rd order and a 4th order engine vibration. Removed the belt again - vibration is gone. Checked all pulleys and found all spin freely, seem to be OK. Installed belt back on and went for road test - found the vibration goes completely away when the fan clutch starts to ramp up. Interesting....removed fan clutch and found the clutch spins freely of the nut, had to use the wrench all the way to get the clutch off. Ran the engine with the fan clutch removed - no vibration. PERFECT, found the problem, installed new fan clutch, re-assembled truck, retest - vibration is back Removed fan clutch again, vibration is gone, removed belt, checked water pump play - little bit of movement in the water pump, installed new water pump, spw of course since it just came with the new long block I put in 3000 miles ago....re-assembled truck, and voila....no more vibrations.
