Stupid temperature blend door motor question.

My 08 F-Super duty is erratic as hell when it comes to temperature delivery.

 

I'd like to have a look see at the blend door motor, but without tearing the dash apart to see what's where, I figured I'd have a peek in the WSM.

 

In the R&R procedure, there's a LH and a RH specified.

 

My truck has Single-Zone EMTC - there's no listing for just single mode temperature door motor.

 

Which motor would my pickup have being single zone? The one identified as LH (looks like it's on the bottom of the HVAC housing) or the one identified as RH (looks like it's on the top of the HVAC housing).

 

I haven't had one of these apart for this specific issue before or for diag, and I'd like to know what I'm up against before I start to tearing at it.

I have done a few of these Super Duty blend door motors but all have been dual zone and all have been the relatively easy right side.

 

Today I diag'd an '03 1/2 ton with no change in temp when commanded. It gave three faulty circuit codes and all said "L/Hand" in their description even though it's not a dual zone truck. On that older truck it's tucked right behind the ACM - thank goodness. By the same logic I'd be looking at your 'left' one. Pretty sure that's in the middle under the floor register for an 08 Super Duty.

 

For your sake I hope that yours is easy enough to get at. Done lots of left actuators on the 1/2 tons. They are not enjoyable.

I need to wrangle myself an IDS and see if there's any codes in it first off.

 

Reading the shop manual a little, there's an initialization procedure that can be done, but I will need to see if there's any codes first.

 

What happens is it's like there's no mid-range on the heat. From about 1/2 the dial to full hot there is no temperature change. It's just peel your face off hot.

 

If you dial it back a little more, it starts to get cold. There's no happy medium, and I guess now that it's starting to warm up outside it won't be as much of a concern, but knowing my luck the stupid thing will go to full hot and stay there when it's 105 degrees outside this summer.

TSB 09-12-15 includes diagnosis, repair direction, part number and labor times for this condition for both manual and dual automatic climate control systems. I have graciously attached the TSB to this post for you to read. If you don't feel like reading, replace the "right side actuator" to correct this on your manual climate control.

 

The bulletin title is misleading.

 

The quick and dirty diagnosis is to place the temperature setting to somewhere in the middle and listen for the tell-tale rubbing/ticking noise from the actuator.
