mchan68
What is the difference between GL-8697-RM and GL-8698-RM ? (Other than one number before the smart asses answer)
Aaron
Ahem. "1". No charge. Your pal, Captain Obvious
Aaron
In all honesty, I can't seem to locate a difference anywhere online. The parts room can't give you applications?
Matt Saunoras
GL-8697-RM, 6C3Z-10346-DBRM is a single alt 110 amp GL-8698-RM, 6C3Z-10346-BBRM is a upper dual alt 140 amp Both mount on the intake manifold and are interchangable for 05+ f-series. I run the 140 amp alt on my truck. Stole it off ebay and it had the original box so I got a $75 core refund.

I just replaced an alternator on an '06 F-550. It listed the GL-8697-RM number. This alternator looked peculiarly larger than the one on my '07, so I looked up the part number on mine, and came up with GL-8698-RM. So you're telling me the F-550 uses a smaller 110 amp alternator than my '07 F-250's 140 amp?
Matt Saunoras
Hmmm well I don't know now. I took a 110 off mine and thought I was putting on a 140. Honestly I didn't notice any size difference. The one I put on mine though was not a reman and was a left over brand new unit. Does your truck have dual alternators or any kind of package that would equip it with a single 140 amp? I always assumed the 140 was just for trucks with dual alts. Perhaps a Lariat or a truck with a lot of accessories would have a single 140. My truck is an XLT with very few options. OR what else is possible is the one in my 140 amp box was not a 140.
mchan68
Mine is only an XLT equipped with a single alternator.
Aaron
Install the big 6.4 alternator. 200 Amp IIRC. You need to machine the case a little around the heater tube bolt but it works pretty well. Did it on a couple conversion vans.
Chase
Like a GLV 8654 RM? The alt on my excursion just crapped out, wanting to upgrade, but would like factory parts if possible.
Matt Saunoras
Since this post I've been told there are several packages that will equip a 6.0 truck with a 140 amp alt from the factory. The main notable one being the snow plow package.
Chase
I was actually referring to the 6.4 alternator Aaron had suggested. Got one sitting in front of me, not all that different. I'm thinking of going for it.
Chase
Well, 6.4 200 amp alternator is on and functioning, just need to grind away the case to bolt the heater tube back on.
Matt Saunoras
What kind of voltage is it putting out at idle? Edi t- Damn it now I want a 6.4 alt.
Aaron
I took an aftermarket unit with an external controller on it off, and put a 6.4 200a on. It was on a shuttle bus. Run 13.1 at idle with all the roof air, lights, wipers and blower fans on "let 'er eat" setting.
Chase
MIne was doing 13.5 @ hot idle, when I started it for the first time, voltage started climbing instantly instead of the minute and a half wait with the factory one.
Matt Saunoras
What did it climb to? Voltage set point? Mine idles 14.0v all day with the 140amp 6.0 alt
Chase
It slowly climbed to 13.3-13.5v. MInd you I have an 05 Limited Excursion, lots of electrical load. Edit: I'll see what it does over time, i'm also going to install a voltmeter in the Excursion to monitor voltage. The batteries went almost dead on my wife, battery light never came on. Matt Saunoras
Snagged a new 6.4 alt on eBay to try out. Took some comparison pics
Aaron
Shit, I don't remember having to take that much off.
Matt Saunoras
Doesn't matter, this alternator won't work correctly on a 6.0 anyways. The 6.4 uses a PCM controlled system 4 charging system, this means a GENCOM line to control voltage set point based on what the PCM wants. This is why Chase's alt only charges 13.5v, it's self exciting basically in default mode. A little digging in the WSM saved me some time
Aaron
The one I put on seemed able to keep up but this is going back a bunch of years.
