leavnon3rd
Has everyone else been having issues with remans? Uses to be much worse lately in the past few months I'd average it out as 1 in 3 put of the box are no good, chipped impellars, won't spin at all, I stall fore it and it pours oil from the seals Internally. I had one I installed 2 months ago come in for "smoke and perf issues" again today take the intake PFF all looks well, I touched the compressor wheel and it came out in my hand, it snapped the exhaust wheel off and now I got a whole lot of cleaning to do since it filled everything with oil as well as a egr cooler since I won't take a chance. Sorry guys I'm venting because I hate repeating a job on someone else's issue. Its everyone else in my command aswell seeing the same

Alex Bruene
I don't think I've had an issue with a new or reman turbo in several years. There was a time that they would seize if left on the shelf too long, but that was a really long time ago.
leavnon3rd
Maybe it is our ford supplier keeping them on the shelf too long? We've had more then a few in the past months that just didn't hold up
Alex Bruene
Maybe it is our ford supplier keeping them on the shelf too long? We've had more then a few in the past months that just didn't hold up They've corrected that issue. Doesn't anybody notice how oily new turbos are out of the box compared to 5 years ago? Keith Browning
Well, seems like every 6.0L turbo I pull out of the box (complete or CRHA) seems like it is dripping oil. Don't recall any of the few 6.4L turbos I have done being like that.
leavnon3rd
The 6.4 turbos we've installed have been great its just our 6.0 remans
forddieseldoctor
I've got an 05 F-550 that has a new crha waiting to be installed. Turbo is under warranty, we put a complete assembly on it last summer (Don't remember why) and it came back a few weeks later smoking. Pulled the turbo and found the oil seal leaking into the turbine housing, Put another turbo on it and now it's back again smoking and using oil. Pulled the turbo, plugged the oil drain, soaped down the turbine wheel put 40 psi of air to the oil feed and watch it bubble. Both of the shafts have the normal amount of play in them. And yes I pre-lubed both of them like the directions that came with them say to do.
Matt Saunoras
The turbine seal is not like a lip seal, more like a piston ring. It's not going to do a good job at sealing compressed air. How is your crankcase pressure? A restricted CCV(or worse yet a CCV delete) can wreak havoc on turbo seals. I'm wondering if the reman problems are a seal quality issue. There's really not a whole lot going on with a 6.0 turbo but when you use aftermarket (non-Garrett) seals you run the risk of a poor quality part. All the turbos I've resealed using OEM Garrett kits have not had any problems.
forddieseldoctor
They are Ford remans, Plus there was oil in the turbine housing when I split the turbo on the bench, but I will check out the crankcase vent tomorrow when I drop the turbo back on. I do remember that the original one did not leak oil. I think that we pulled it for a sticking/overboost issue.
Matt Saunoras
Well I can't speak for who remans 6.0 turbos but I'm sure it's not Garrett themselves. There are number of aftermarket seal kits out there and any one of them could give questionable reliability. Actually I have a rotating assembly out of a reman center housing I should check it to see if it looks like it has Garrett bearings. Also you can buy new (not remanufactured, no core) turbos from Garrett for around the same price as a Ford reman. I know if I needed one I wouldn't be using a Ford unit when an OEM is available for the same price.
forddieseldoctor
Turbo is in. No more smoke. Our magnahic gauge is beat up enough that you cant read it so i didnt do an actual crankcase pressure test, but i did pull the oil cap off and had next to nothing coming out at cold idle and hot idle. I'm not thinking it has a crankcase pressure issue since the original turbo wasn't leaking oil.
