lmorris
Us and 7 other dealerships have formed a group to try and encourage more techs to come to the area. Today they had in a photographer doing a photo shoot of some of us at work. Yours truely was chosen to stand beside the 2010 RCMP Crown Vic I was doing some transmission work on. I will post a link to the site when it's all done.
djmiller
Piss off with your recruiting! My trans tech that I built from the ground up is now moving to Alberta beause his wife's only living relative is now terminally ill. He doesn't want to go really, but he doing it for her and the money is strong. PS. I need a trans tech NOW! DPS6 Clutches and 2-4 bands out the wazoo at our place right now. Oh and my esimtated arrival date for a Ranger trans in Dec 27 from Vulcan *face palm.
lmorris
My bad, poor choice of wording. It's not so much to get people to move here, as it is to get more people into the trade. We all know that things are looking a little sparse in the ranks. I really didn't want to piss anyone off. Sorry djmiller.

The common perception is that the guys working on the rigs in the oil patch are making nothing but money, so I will just come out and ask-how does your pay compare to someone's pay that is working on the rigs? We all know that it is all about the money. Why enter a trade when there is another option that pays better, does not require a huge upfront investment in tools and training, and allows you to go home at and sleep at night without staying awake all night wondering what toilet will be waiting for me when I get to work and how am I going to get paid to fix it. I can't speak for guys on exploration rigs other than to say that those are mostly all camp jobs - go home and sleep at night just don't happen that often. Pay isn't horrible, AFAIK but for a single young man, living in camp and overtime aplenty are certainly compelling. My son is a driller on a service rig. He spends quite a bit of time in camp but he gets per diem when he stays off site in his holiday trailer. Over $30/hour (driller gets paid more than roughneck, rig hand or derrick man) with overtime available. Being he's a driller, he gets fuel supplied and over a buck and a half/klick for his truck. Depending how hungry you are as a driller, you can earn almost $200K per annum. Downside is that when there's no work or yard time to be had, you are watching soap operas at home (or for many young fellows - just getting blitzed). Techs in our neck of the woods get paid $40something per flat rate hour. YMMV
mrbudge
Here in the Socialist republic of Manitoba, a first level apprentice will make a minimum of 13.84 an hour, increasing to 19.99 an hour for a fourth level apprentice. So now you go and get ten grand worth of tools, save your pennies so you can afford to be without pay as you go to school, because you never get your first pogey check until after you are back to work. Oh yeah, and you also have pay to eat and have a warm place to sleep. I am just old and bitter, but under the circumstances I don't see how you could possibly recruit someone into this trade if that is what we have to offer. The gifted or ambitious techs that we put through to the end always end up leaving, usually the first week they are back after graduating. Aaron
$26.35 flat rate best I made in Ontario. Currently hourly, more money than that.
Aaron
Mid to high 30's in the NWT if memory serves me correctly.
Matt Saunoras
I finally broke $26/hr flat rate and got a 40hr guarantee. This area is notorious for low wages. When I worked at Lincoln all the original guys (15-20 years) were stuck in the low low 20s and the asset guys coming out of school were going flat rate at $12.00/hr. We couldn't recruit a sack of dirt. This is why. When I was moved to the shop I'm in now I got $14/hr flat rate. I still made that same amount the first year I got senior master too. The guy I worked with got $15/hr and he didn't have one cert, none of them did. That was around the time when they started requiring certs for warranty work. So guess who started doing trannies because he was the only one certified? Trans work at $14/hr? I was happy to prove myself but eventually I got sick of it and told them to fuck off. I was seriously ready to leave the profession. So I got a little more money and it was worth it for a little while until I started doing trucks all the time. That's when other shops started knocking on the door and better offers were out there, I didn't even have to look. Rather than go shopping I merely mentioned to them where I could go and what I could make, they matched it without blinking an eye.
djmiller
I'm just jerking ya Leon. I don't blame you at all. Just frustrated bc I recently dumped a few grand more into training him through Sept/Oct that I'll see nothing for now. We all know I did my two year stint out there and the only reason I didn't jet up to NorthStar was because my now wife is from this area and convinced me to move away from Alberta (nuts I know)

I'm actually trying to find a plastic surgeon with low enough self respect to fix me up to look like that asshole for real! The avatar will not change... NEVER!
