State of Emergency?

So we had a little snowstorm roll through the north east. NJ and NY have had their Governors declare a state of emergency. Officially this means stay off the roads until this is lifted. I don't see the problem looking out my windows this morning. The reason supposedly was not so much the snow but the accompanying winds that would cause snow drifts and low/dangerous visibility. I get that but... it isn't that windy from what I can see. Maybe it is near the coast. Looking at maybe 8" and it is blowing around some.

So I sit here at a quarter to seven and can't decide what to do... at some point I need to move the snow from my driveway and walks and the three foot pile the plows have stacked at the end of the driveway before I can think about going anywhere anyhow. Thank goodness for snow throwers! But given the circumstances, I have no clue what to do concerning reporting to work - the lack of communication is frightening and really pisses me off. I don't even have a phone number of anyone in management to call. I will be sure to bring that point up.

Well it looks like a handful of people made it in so far. I guess I will get dressed and clean up and go from there.

According to the state Office of Emergency Management, the governor's declaration "empowers the New Jersey Office of Emergency Management (NJOEM) to act on behalf of the Governor to employ the resources and assets of State, local and private agencies to provide immediate assistance to localities." A common misconception about a state of emergency is that civilians are not allowed to travel on the roads during the declaration. According to the NJOEM, "the Governor's declaration does not normally restrict citizen movements or activities. The State may limit access to affected areas due to concerns for public safety but will notify the public of these restrictions."

The forecast was 2-4" here, we have about 15" and it's still snowing.  I snowblowed and shoveled 6 times since Wed night. It's a lot of lake effect- as long as the wind is out of the north and the lake isn't frozen, it will continue to snow...

I cleaned up at home and rolled on into work. Saw a handful of vehicles and sailed right in at a safe speed. I have work to do... half of my coworkers showed up. For crying out loud. It was not a crippling storm by any means. Better than sitting at home anyways.

There's about a foot of snow here, I'm 4 mi from Raritan bay.  Was windy yesterday, when the snow was falling, it seemed calm.  Today, the wind has picked up.

The road is plowed, has been, but not to pavement.  And I watch idiots going by at 50+ in a 35 zone, on packed snow/ice.

Boss texted at 5:15, waking me up, saying roads are "too bad", stay home until he calls. No call..  Looks like no work.  Ugh.  So I had the drive cleared since 6:30 for nothing.

Sometimes it's a waste, even a couple of inches and most of our parts suppliers won't send their deliveries out.

Well except for the cold it is actually turning into a beautiful sunny day... I know because I am spending my day outside trying to get trucks started and moved that were towed in. I was hoping to be working in my warm shop where I have current work in progress going. Uhhhg! But I feel so alive!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't feel bad Fred, the driveway needed to be cleaned anyway right? If the wind doesent blow it all back I should not have to do any more learing when I get home. Good thing I love the snow.

We have had our fair share of weather related problems here today, also. We leave our tire dunk tank outside and I went to use it this morning but had to break up the 32nd of an inch skim of ice that was on the top before I could check my tire. :haha2:

Oh it sure has been cold the last couple of days. As far as snow is concerned, well I'm waiting to put my newly acquired beast to the test.

Must be nice that you haven't needed it.  The snow on my lawn and boulevard is piled up 6 feet.  I am running out of space to put snow, and it's only the beginning of winter...  and, we're under a snowfall warning again today too.
