Mekanik
Has anyone else had to replace freeze plugs in a 6.0L yet? I've got a truck here where the customer filled the cooling system with water and had 8 of the little cylinder head plugs(behind the exhaust manifolds) and 2 larger plugs on the engine block just fall out. For the record this happened before the arctic vortex. I thought that this was just an automotive urban legend, that the plugs would fall out if the cooling system froze and I shouldn't even be calling them 'freeze plugs'. Keith Browning
They are core plugs. Their purpose is to allow removal of the casting core but I have also read that these holes in the casting are where the casting core was supported. The fact that they fall out is from expansion when water freezes into ice but have little or no role in preventing damage from freezing. I find this misconception annoying and it's iright up there with "Cummings"

mchan68
I find this misconception annoying and it's iright up there with "Cummings" Gawd almighty, I'm glad I'm not the only who seems overly annoyed by that too. Equally annoying, are the guys that claim "Ford owns Cummings" or post questions about swapping Cummins engines into engine bays where a Powerstroke is supposed to reside. My usual answer is "it'll cost way more money than it will, to fix your Powerstroke properly if the end result is a reliable product with the money spent". Brad Clayton
You guys would really get annoyed after a 2 minute conversation with me. I call nuts...bolts, engines.....motors and all kinds of other improperness. However, for all our Northern brethren, I have NEVER called the CN Tower.....the CNN Tower. Mekanik
Kind of like calling an engine a motor? When I was at Wyoming Tech, if you were talking about a motor, it better have electrical windings.
Mekanik
I replaced the freeze plugs, leaking water pump, broken thermostat housing, and coolant bottle. The cooling system won't hold vacuum, so I start filling it up with coolant. 2 gallons...another 2 gallons...another 2 gallons and no drips. Now I pressure test it, but it won't build pressure, but my oil level is rising really fast. I was afraid this was going to happen.
Keith Browning
Guess those freeze out plugs didn't do their job! There's a P.O.S 4.6L van in our lot with a new water pump and radiator... and a cracked block. I guess the owner didn't have money for antifreeze. Mekanik
Yeah, too bad it's out of warranty or Ford would have to pay for it.
