tonybullitt
Lately all of the responses from hotline about any concern on 6.7 are to change the oil to 5w40 full synthetic and retest. Have any of you been getting this also?
Keith Browning
ANY concern? I contacted the Hot Line last week for a check engine light concern, no mention of engine oil recommendation.
tonybullitt
Sorry not on every concern but most and yes some have been on check engine lite on. Overboost code first thing they respond with is does it do it with 5w40 full synthetic in it.
tonybullitt
Friend of mine at another dealer called and asked me about why hotline is pushing us to put 5w40 in also.
Keith Browning
That would make sense Tony, since the turbo uses engine oil pressure with the VGT actuator. I wonder if they are researching this.
tonybullitt
I am in MN maybe they think to cold for the 10w30.
Matt Saunoras
Off topic slightly....There is a new TSB for replacing the VGT solenoid. It's the same one a 6.0 uses, don't know why they thought it would stop going bad.
tonybullitt
Here is the latest response from hotline about a turbo concern. This time they do say its because of the cold temp. With the colder temperatures that the Minnesota area has been seeing it would be recommended to change the engine oil to a winter viscosity such as SAE 5W- 40 full synthetic diesel motor oil or SAE 15W-40 full synthetic diesel motor oil. Changing the oil viscosity will improve VGT response time and reduce the drag on the bearings in the turbocharger when the oil is cold. tonybullitt
Mine have been cab and chassis trucks. That tsb doesn't say for just pickups but says to look at waste gate pid.
cbriggs
I was also given that reply about an overboost code, switch to 5/w40 to improve response time of the vgt. Make sure you keep a copy of that reply for fmpp services, they don't like paying for 5/40 anymore. We can only get 5/40 to go though between October and March, otherwise they decline it and say 10/30 is fine for summer time.
Steve Mutter
I just had a 2015 with p259f come in today, the truck already had 5w40 in it and the code still comes back. Will have to wait for the fix I guess.
Fordracer
I had one a couple months ago that had a P259F and P0236 and the hotline had me replace the turbo and run 5W-40 in it. It came back yesterday with only the P259F and it has 7,000 miles on it since the repair. He said everything was fine since we put the turbo on it until the light came back on. FF data shows the VGT CMD was 15% and the VGT ACT was 0%. Hotline said to replace the VGT and run 5W-40.
Steve Mutter
So who pays for the 5w40 now? At the new model training they told us these engines or not to see synthetic oil till 60,000 km
