Say you have an 04 6.0L torn down for headgaskets and coolers. You remove the standpipes and heads and have everything opened up for a day or so.

Then you remove the oil cooler, would you expect to have oil over run the reservoir like any other time? Or would you expect most of the reservoir to have drained back since the standpipes are out?

This customer mentioned his truck was getting hard to start but didnt say when. I did a pre repair vc-9 flush and everything seemed to be in order with ficm voltage, injector compensation, etc. never verified anything other than the stuck turbo, cooling system pressure and ECT/EOT correlation.

Now I'm wondering if the pump is draining back causing his issue but I can't seem to remember if having a dry reservoir is normal or not given the circumstances.

I took the heads off one Saturday and I am just now getting back on it. I am getting ready to pull the HPOP so I will see if there is any flow out of the supply port from the res. I'll report back here in a couple a hours.

I don't know. On every 6.0 I've worked on, I always get a lot of oil coming out of the inlet port as soon as the HPOP is removed.

I just took the pump out and had mad flow from the reservoir, so the system did not drain back with the stand pipes out. I would say that this system and pump is sealed pretty good. Not sure what would happen if the pump were pooched. That may be a thing to try at the ol college this semester.
