6.o lifter bore

Hi Techs,

What would you consider out of spec? I have a 07 Ambulance block that I am recon-ing for my F350.

This engine had a couple of flat lifters+cam lobes.

Other than that was serviced by hours and the rest of it looks good.

The machine shop cleaned up the lifter bore and that's when I got the call. I was told there was a machinist that can  perform these type repairs. I am assuming he cuts it and installs a bushing or something of that nature. I will find out details later.

Should I let it fly?  Has anyone ever gone this direction or new about and let it fly?

It is out about 0.010 - 15

The plan was to punch out cylinder 20 and get a overhaul kit 4C3Z-6R007-A as long as the block was cool.

thanks

Karl

Hi Keith,

Thanks for responding.

I'm thinking this is what the machinist is wanting to do(put sleeves in). I didn't get a chance to run over there yesterday but am planning on it today  @ lunch.

He told me that if it were his,  he would likely not worry about it.  Just wanted me to know.  I don't want to spend a shit load on a brick. I have access to other 6.0s but would have to take them out & they all are in E series chassis.

I would like to look at it myself to get a better idea of what to do. I may just have it sleeved if that is what he recommends just for piece of mind.

I talked with one of my coworkers and yeah, this is done to repair lifter bores and modify race engines where larger lifters are desired. To me, it would make sense to have the sleeve installed and bring the bore back into specification.

I just Spoke to my machinist and he told me he didn't have any machines to do that type of repair. He is looking around in Massachusetts to see if anyone local will cut and install sleeves.

Do you know anyone in the North East that does this? I'm going to Google it and see what I come up with

I really don't want to take another one out

thanks for your help

Hi Matt,

It  had 2 lifters that failed. One bore is out of spec or loose in comparison to others. Just at the bottom of the bore though.

He had me bring all the good and bad lifters to his shop to check bore integrity.  He tried several lifters in the bad bore.

Thanks Bruce,

I saw them VW's you did, Very nice!

The Machine shop picture I put up doesn't do these blocks. Now I'm hunting for another Machine shop. I have to get the block done because I already have the parts.

I also have a 07 DT466 that needs a cam(& going through)that could take its place in my truck :haha2:  I really like that Idea but I haven't found any solid evidence that it would be OK to do so. If I had proof that the only difference in the way the truck drove was power and sound, I would be all for it.

Forgot to mention I have an 02 ambulance 7.3L too.

1 cylinder had coolant from a poor seeling injector cup. Its been ready for re assembly for about 4 years now. All machine work has been done.

I would really like the 6.o back in it though. Also I have a shit load of extra parts for 6L too.

6.0 would be the best way to go truthfully just for simplicity sake.

Or a complete Cummins swap kit retaining the 5R110 with the PCS controller. Or swapping to a 4r100. But none of these may be legal emission options in your jurisdiction.

As for your original question I'd be comfortable with a sleeved lifter bore. I also wonder if there is any improvements that can be made to increase oil feed to the lifters.

Hi Aron

Agreed on keeping it factory.

I'm sure if one had a machine shop they could do all sourts of upgrades specially the oil system. I wonder if tap ping into the stand pipes (regulated of course)to some piping for extra lifter/cam lube?

To bad it s not in the budget build.

Would you agree that usually lifter damage is due to an engine that idles a lot or lack of maintanence?

Still waiting to get block back. I got the cam and engine kit(freeken cool).

I also got a set of Ford Heads for the build. Im piling up with 6.o stuff

I will likely keep it all but..ya nevah know.

This truck better last until I retire lol

Thanks
