Rickster42
Hi, looking over my time for a primary alt r&r on an E-series. Clerk pays me 10346A which is 1.1 I look it up and right below operation 10346A it says "do not use with 8620F EXCEPT for 6.0L DIT" 8620F is serp belt replacement.(pays 1.9) Clerk says only applicable if I changed the belt( I use the tensioner arm tip to unload tension on the serp belt and sneak the alt in that way, but it`s not the way the service manual says to do it). So did I screw up by not putting a belt on it for add 1.9 or is it applicable without "changing" the belt only on 6.0L? How would you get paid for the same job?TIA
Keith Browning
According to my own experience AND the service manual, R&R of either alternator does not require the removal of the FEAD belt therefore, if you were to claim both operations the warranty police would deny passage of the claim. Likewise, as you mentioned, if you had also replaced the belt then yes, you could claim both operations because there is no overlap. Since the belt does not need to be removed to replace the alternator, then doing so is an entirely separate operation not to mention a pain in the !@#!?$! Rickster42
Thanks Keith, it helps me when another tech explains it to me.Sometimes I find it hard to believe the warranty clerk who can be quite difficult to deal with sometimes, and has never wrenched..The stinging of that job time is slowly subsiding...hehe
Keith Browning
You and your warranty person will benefit greatly if you discuss things like this frequently. Doing so will help your dealer and you get paid if you know how to best write up your repairs. If your warranty person has a better understanding of what certain jobs are and what is being done it will help them do their job too. eastendpowerstroke
Why did you replace the ALT on the van?? if you only got R&R time you missed a bunch 10200ab .4 alt ckt test 10346a 1.1 R&R Alt 10346azm .1 Extra time to disconnect/connect frame mounted battery (if it had one) 10654c 1.2 Battery Test, Charge, and Re-Test (if Alt wasn't charging gotta charge the batts) 6007azw .1 clean cac tube (gotta take it off to R&R alt gotta clean it to reinstall it) thats 2.9 hrs your clerk paid you 1.1, you and the shop lost out on 1.8 hrs!! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif The pen is mightier than the wrench, obviously your story would need to support the op's I generally look up my own labor ops on large time consuming jobs and write them on the RO next to my story. the warranty clerk knows how to use a pen not a wrench most don't know how to use SLTS for that matter. so I'm already in to it for many hours the extra 15 min or so to shake the labor op tree only helps make me and the shop more.
