Has anyone seen or heard of built in tool storage for techs. The dealership I'm moving to is installing them in the new shop they're building. My service manager me he had seen pictures at another Ford dealer, but could not remember which one.Any ideas?

Build A Bay. We (Snap-on) do this all the time, all over the place.  One one hand, it's great for the techs because you aren't supplying your own tools.  On the other hand, it can be a pain when you don't dictate what's in the toolbox you work out of.

Airlines are switching over to boxes like this with electronic tool inventory.  If you want to land a plane in Europe, that plane needs to be built and worked on with total tool inventory control.  If not, their insurance won't let that plane land there.  It'll be Stateside eventually.

That's cool.  I wasn't aware of any that were done and didn't include tools.  While it's a bummer that you have that expense, I'd rather have my own tool choices if I was working in a shop.

It seems to be the way it's going with newly built shops.  There are a few around here.  Boxes are supplied, but tools aren't.  I guess it's cool, unless you're the guy who just paid 10Gs for a new tool box, just so you can take it home.

Had a buddy that worked at a ford dealer in southern alberta that did this and he said it was a great idea but the one drawer for sockets was 1/4 inch too short to stand up sockets and most of the longer tools did not fit in any of the drawers so they were always lying around.  We have built ins here but they are just cabinets with a shelf on one side and a open cabinet with a roll out cart that has storage in it so it works for most stuff.  we also have an upper cabinet that has computer and more storage.  Guess it would all depend on what brand of built ins they were using.
