Is it a manual?

Yes...but I managed to get it low enough to see in the pan, it's clean.

 

lifter roller bearing... or maybe nut from an injector solenoid?

My guess is lifter needle, seen lots. I have a 2005 engine core at my disposal, might swap front covers and see if it runs. In the process of trying to get the pump pieces out of the cover.

I have also seen several gerotor sets that have foreign object damage unrelated to lifter failure. It's almost impossible to figure out what went through them sometimes.

 

I've only seen 2 broken gear sets and both were in manuals. I think the abrupt engine speed change or perhaps excessive RPM is what can crack them.
