Keith Browning
Has anyone seen a definite target mileage figure on the DPF ash removal interval? /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/shrug.gif The web based training only mentions what it is and vaguely touched upon cleaning. I get the immediate understanding that WE won't be cleaning them but rather replacing or exchanging them.
Cetane
I think there is something about it in the 6.4L coffee table book. I will try and find it today. In the 3+ years I have been in development of this engine I havent seen one plug up with ash even when running engines that burned a ton of oil. Bruce Amacker
I don't know about the 6.4, but DPF's in other chassis that I work with (T444E Busses) get cleaned once a year with total ash accumulation only a couple of tablespoons. They use a pulse air cleaning system that looks like a Barracuda parts wash cabinet. An oven is in the works for cleaning them. Merry Christmas! Mekanik
I hope we will get one of those coffe table books at school.
Cetane
We tend to be very hard on the engines and overall they have been pretty reliable. As far as oil leaks go I dont remember anything major happening but we go through engines pretty fast so if it was a problem that occurs at higher mileage it may still be present. That being said there has been significant effort placed on making sure this is a robust design. Hopefully everyone has done their jobs and we wont see the kinds of issues the 6.0L experienced. I didnt realize the coffee table book hadnt been released yet. I probably wouldnt have said anything about it. I would guess they will be available soon but I am not sure how they are distributed to techs.
Keith Browning
I am not sure how they are distributed to techs. They rarely are. Any I have in print were given to me long after they were published. That is why I put the .PDF versions up on the site - so they are available. If Ford or international has any objection to my posting them here on the web site, I have yet to hear from either company. The files just appeared! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cool.gif I have a 4.5L book but If I want that in .PDF format I will have to do it myself, which I started to do but it takes more time than I have to spare right now. Huh?? Really..... They usually have them to hand out at each class.. The newest one is almost always available(unless they run out).. Either way, all indications I have say they will be available in the 6;4L class. They are going through final print(to check for accuracy) now and should be shipped to the training centeres after the holidays.. Dont worry, they'll be available /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/rockon.gif.. Great stuff BTW..
Keith Browning
Huh?? Really..... They usually have them to hand out at each class.. I'll take your word for it but the LAST place I have seen, or should I say NEVER seen them was at my training center(s). But you have to understand, the 6.4L course I am about to take is the only Ford diesel training I have taken anywhere near the product launch. As a matter of fact, I took the 6.0L diesel engine repair course last year! This time I insisted as soon as it was available and fortunately my manager listens. I feel like the "chosen one" for going to this training at the launch and one of the very first classes! My luck? The books won't be shipped by the time I go Jan 23, but, I am keeping my fingers crossed!
Cetane
I finally got back to work today to check on this and it looks like service engineering is predicting somewhere around 120,000 miles the DPF will have to be "serviced". Obviously this will vary with the type of usage the truck sees....
Keith Browning
Thanx for the informed scoop. From what I am reading most manufacturers are looking at least a 100,000 mile interval with indications pointing towards 150,000 miles. It seems the key is how the vehicle is used is what will define the variances.
Cetane
Ahh yes, how the vehicle is used.... I cant wait to hear you guys' stories about power adders and the effect on the exhaust system. I can see people plugging them up solid and not being able to regen them. When I lean on the A/F it can get ugly in a hurry. Does anybody have one onsite yet? Jim Warman
WSM states 120,000 miles for cleaning the ash. There is however a misprint.... it lists a probable life expectancy of 400,000 km (which would be 248,500 miles) but list the equivalent as being 120,000 miles again (gotta love those bookworms).
