Driving Impressions

We finally got a 6.4L 350. I performed the PDI. Myself and

my diesel trainnie took it out for it's first flogging.

I eased into it until it reached temp and then started driving it hard.

Maybe its just us but it felt no stronger than any stock 6.0L we've driven, in fact we thought it felt somewhat lazy on the bottom end.

We also did not care for the tranny shift program, especially at WOT.

I did seem to notice an increase in performance in the 50 to 80 mph range, but there again I expected a downshift and a slam in the seat, but it seemed to be content to stay in 5th.

I understand that it is a new vehicle and the engine has to break in but it just didn't seem any stronger than a 6.0L.

In fact I drove an '05 350 SRW lwb crewcab w/ a plow frame and toolbox and it actually felt stronger.

Don't get me wrong, it didn't run bad, it just didn't impress me.

As well, are everyone elses 6.4s out of steam at 3000 rpm?

I drove this thing approx 25 miles and while I like it,I don't love it and I have to wonder what the reaction of the general public will be.

Your description was exactly what I thought when I took my pdi out. I also found the delayed decel a bit bothersome. I think the 6.4 felt less snappy then the late 6.0’s. I was also impressed with the price, I think it was almost 10 grand for the engine and trans.

I must agree. I've driven a few now and they are all the same. I've had brand new 6.0l 07's off the lot that are snappier and their enginges are brand new and not broken in either. So I don't believe it's because the engine is tight. I'm not all that impressed. But I do like the interior. This would be a nice truck with a V10.

Just a thought guys.. Could it be that they are just smoother? With the sequential turbo system, it may not set you back in the seat like you expect.... It'll be hard to tell w/o a drag race /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cool.gif...

IMO we were spoiled by the 6.0L rocket. The difference in seat-of-the-pants performance from the 7.3 to 6.0L was huge. Maybe they learned something? I suspect you will see ANY 6.4L that is chipped and brought in for repair WILL be kicked to the curb by Ford. Can't believe they don't have the capability built into the ECM to "see" it's been tampered with. It won't be up to the dealership to decide who gets a repair unless the dealer wants to pay for it them selves.

I'm all for it!

I was thinking the same thing. The 6.0L tends to hold back a little and then really pump out the power. The only 6.4L I have driven so far really ripped! I made a hard right out of the dealer and the tires were on the edge of breaking loose until I let off the go pedal. I never felt that with a 6.0L on dry pavement. Not stock anyway. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif Remember, now you have that little turbo that can spool up really quick - no waiting for the VGT to to it's thing. If any of you have driven the LCF it is the same deal, you really are not aware of the transition from the small to the large turbo at all.
