Tricking IDS by Mimicking XP Pro

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys:

I need to load IDS on a machine that has XP Home. I know this has been covered in the past, but I was not able to pull it up on a search. Is there a program that tricks IDS into thinking XP Home is XP Pro?

Thanks!

Bruce, I was involved in that thread and someone mentioned using Tweak-NT but advised that the "download" version no longer works in doing that... or something like that. Someone offered me a copy of a version that supposedly will but that didn't materialize for some reason.

As soon as my VCM arrives (yeah, right - ordered it 11 weeks ago) I will be faced with the same predicament as the laptop I want to install IDS on has Windows 2000 but my main laptop has XP Home. I keep telling myself to stop being such a cheap Bastard and just buy the upgrade for $190.00 but the total cost of my diag equipment is starting to add up!

In the Rotunda site, it says that the ids and vcm's are Vista compatible. May want to just upgrade to that.

Unfortunately, Vista is not compatible with many automotive programs that I (we) run. The laptop in question belongs to my associate trainer who is doing 6.0 classes and needs to have an IDS. And, yes, I'm a cheap bastard too, and would prefer not buying another copy of Pro.

Thanks!

Kyle, Email the file to webmaster@forddoctorsdts.com and I will manually put it on the server. For some reason file attachments stopped writing to the server despite the fact that running the test link says it works. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/banghead.gif Yes, even this web site needs a reflash from time to time. I still have not updated the software with the patches... /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/surprise.gif

When the installation disk is started, one of the first operations it performs is checking the operating system and version. IF it is not XP Pro it displays a nice little denial screen and shuts down the installer. Even if you were to "trick" the installer into installing IDS on a different OS I cant help but wonder what components of XP Pro IDS requires that may not be in XP Home or other versions of Windows.

I'll resend it tonight when I get home. It will be quite late as I have a seminar to go to.

I did install this download of Tweak-NT on my home PC and it ran. I'm not sure how this will help with the IDS install. I only took a quick look at it and it appears to deal mostly with the Windows GUI. I would think that you would have to edit the registry to make it work. If it is a big problem for you guys, I will spend some time on it. If not let me know and I won't go any further.

Thank you Kyle, for those following this topic scroll back up a few posts, the file attachment now works and there are additional downloads that you may need... I will need to re-test this program with this version and see if it works.

I refuse to pay 190bucks to upgrade to XP Pro so I feel your pain keith. And they wonder why people pirate software now days!

My setup is with a toughbook running pro but it is also the shops. I have planned on getting my own and have a laptop I would use, it also has xp home so I would be in the same boat. Im interested if any of these would work. or I could get out my *cough* copy of xp pro *cough* and install that if you know what I mean /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbup.gif

I wouldnt want ot run vista. I hear its a huge memory hog and it hasnet had too good of luck yet. more hassle than its worth not to mention you have to upgrade your pc so much to be able to meet the requirments

I bought a $350 2.8 ghz Compaq laptop locally from a guy on craigslist.org

I have a good friend that works as a network admin for a school district so a copy of XP pro with a corporate license fell out of his bag "accidentally" one day. It runs IDS faster than the toughbook and also MD truck and CAT ET using a USB to serial converter.

A touch screen would be nice but I'm not 20 years old anymore and looking a pid data and graphs on a 15 inch screen as opposed to a 12 inch helps out a bit.

I have been running a Dell Latitude D810 with a 15.4 inch widescreen for a year and half now. 1.86ghz, 1024 mb ram and an 80gb/7200 rpm hard drive, XP pro and it dances circles around our shops toughbook. I download updates on our wireless network faster than the tough book does wired or wireless. The toughbook just meets the absolute minimum requirements to run IDS. And you get so used to the touch pad that the touch screen on the toughbook just doesn't matter to me. When you need to watch the amount of pids we do as diesel techs, I'll take my 15.4 inch screen any day over that little bugger on the toughbook. Not to mention that P.O.S (PDS).

Aere there any main sttings that need to be changed after the download? We have a tech here that is interested in getting a laptop with XP Home up and running as an IDS system.

I have some "tools" that capture registry queries and logs them. I can do a capture during an install of IDS to see what the IDS looks for early in the install. I tried to install IDS on Windows 2000 and it banged out at the beginning of the install. Once I figure out what it is looking for, I MAY be able to change the registry key

What I need to know is what the level of interest is for you guys. If it will be very helpful to a lot of you then I will give it a shot. This can be a very time consuming process but I will attempt it if it will be used by more than just 2 people. Let me know.

if the copy that is listed here doesnt work, email me at protocol@protocolauto.com and i will be happy to send you the known good copy i have.

when you get it, you will need to run it, and it will ask you on the setup screen how to configure. tick "XP pro to XP pro" cause for some odd reason, there is no option for XP home. when it finishes, reboot, and it works great. i have installed it on two laptops with XP home, and havent had an issue yet (aside from the v 48 update, but that was due to the IP config issues that we got straight finally)

that must be in error, i just had a conversation with someone at IDS 2 days ago, they are still trying to get Vista to play nice with the IDS software. they are having truoble with all the new security stuff microsoft added in. i was told vista certification is coming soon and also they are working on wireless from the laptop to VCM finally.

You're right. I just checked Rotunda again. And it now shows in bold red letters that: Windows Vista is not compatible. I'm pretty sure it was about a month back that there was a statement in system requirements that showed it was compatible. Go figure.

  • 1 month later...

I tried but failed. I purchased XP Pro, set it all up and got to work. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/hammer2.gif I just updated my IDS to the 49. something that has the new update console and the VGT test. There was a warning about the software not being compatible with Windows Vista. (now that it was mentioned)
