EGR Cooler Performance (P2457)
Chad_Kelsoe replied to the_twig_187's topic in 6.7L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
I also don't remove the intake or heater tube. I removed battery box and remove the pcm to help make some room. I have also removed the cooler with the inlet exhaust pipe still attached to the exhaust manifold. I had a few that the bolts did not wanna break loose, so instead of worrying about breaking them I left the pipe in. You can twist the cooler enough that it will clear going in and out. Not easy but doable. -
2015 transits water in the air filters (code p061b)
Chad_Kelsoe replied to the_twig_187's topic in All Gasoline Engines
Diesel or gas engines? At this time I've only seen 1 diesel in the shop (that was last summer) and no gas yet. We do seem to be selling a lot of them though. -
Removing Cylinder Heads
Chad_Kelsoe replied to Keith Browning's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
We nearly always leave the injectors in the head when pulling them. We just make sure that we don't set it on it's face where it would sit on the injectors tips. The only issues I've heard of is guys using wire wheels to clean the heads up and nick one of the injector tips and cause issues with fuel delivery after it's put back together. -
Well we got 11" of snow yesterday evening. I've seen 3-4 inches before, but seeing this much was mind blowing to this Southern Boy. Driving at night was interesting as even both low beams and high beams along with my KC lights on I couldn't see maybe 30 feet. But it warmed up enough today and road crews got most of snow cleared off so back to work tomorrow.

We got down to 6 degrees last week here in North Alabama. Currently sitting at 33 degrees, with 100% chance of snow today. They are estimating we will get 1-3 inchs today with another inch tonight. Uncommon for us southern folk, so pretty much everything is shut down. Our owner decided last night to close down today, but me and another tech came in early to get some leftover work done. Looks like we'll probably be closed again tomorrow since it wont get above freezing till tomorrow afternoon, and our DOT is not setup well to remove snow from road ways. Thankfully I got my ole 4X4 truck running good and a new set of tires last week so I'm looking forward to playing in some snow

Just finished installing a Jasper "complete" 6.4 into an 08 F-550. Jasper's definition of complete equals sending you a long block with both turbos, injectors, and high pressure pump in a separate box. No gaskets, lines, or any other fuel system parts came with it. We tried to sell them a Ford complete, but they decided to go with the Jasper instead. Also just installed 8 injectors, fuel pressure regulator, glow plugs and RH harness, and a new fuel tank in a 05 F-550 6.0. Currently in my stall is an 08 6.4 getting a high pressure fuel pump for a P0088 and both up-pipes. Also have a 2013 motorhome on a F-53 chassis that's getting an engine harness thanks to rats deciding the fuel injector wires looked good for eating. Still gotta diag a 11 F-550 6.7 that keeps setting the DTC for DEF quality, even though the DEF keeps checking out ok. Another tech has already replaced the nox sensor and reprogrammed the PCM, and recall 14E03 has been performed.

I did a starter on a 6.7 2 weeks ago. I've always had issues getting them out and got to the point where I would always pull the oil filter adapter off to get it out. Well this one was in a flat bay and I didn't wanna make a mess, so I pulled the inner fender and somehow got it out and new one in with 20 minutes. If I remember right, once it's loose pull it straight back against the engine mount, the push the gear end up and twist at the same time will allow it to clear between the frame and engine. It's tight, but if you hold your tongue just right it will fish right out.

I've had 2 trucks come in with a restricted upper fuel filter causing low fuel pressure. Both were aftermarket filters that were just installed.

Diesel Mechanic In A Bottle

6.7? Better hope he didn't damage the fuel system.... -
I've worked on one and saw another other in the Transit class. I wish there was an access panel, but due to the design on the dash there is not one. But they are nice to drive. I was able to drive the one home overnight while it was in for repairs, and on a 100 mile round trip averaged 21 mpg.

There is not an access cover in the cab.

I make $26 an hour with an additional bonus of $1 for every hour the other guys put out for being the "team leader" in our truck shop. We have 3 other techs and an oil changer, so their hours come out to around 120-150 hours per week. Our labor rate down here is $106 per hour normally. Boss told me when I get all my certs, I'll get another raise. Still have brakes, steering and suspension, auto trans, and drivetrain to go.

Currently sitting in Nashville now attending Climate Control class, but when I get back to work Monday I have a 2012 F-550 that is getting a turbo. It has a total of 350 miles, 162 total engine hours with 151 idle hours. I'm guessing unison ring is stuck and causing it to set the P132B code. Gonna go in Saturday when I get back to swap engines in my own truck (92 GMC K1500). Got a bottom end knock in my current engine, so I bought a used engine for $200, threw a crank kit in it and resealed it up. Truck mainly gets used for a work truck and also used when we get snow here in Alabama. Last year we got around 8 inches over 2 days and it shut every thing down for nearly a week . Everyone keeps talking like this winter could be worse than last year, and I need a reliable way to get to work in case it is.

Got a V-10 in a 2012 bucket truck that came apart and made a big mess. Ended up breaking 5 rods, 4 piston, busted the block and oil pan, and scored both heads and cams. Customer just had serviced the truck when it shut down 1/2 mile from their shop. They towed to us, I got it jumped off and sent a helper to drive it not thinking the bottom end was damaged. It wasn't noisey when it left. I think someone forgot to add oil during that service, though they haven't admitted to it yet.

We have a local radiator shop that will clean them out and apply a new liner to the inside that is much thicker and robust than the factory liner. I've been here 2 1/2 years now and have yet to see the liner fail yet. It usually cost the customer around $300 and takes around a week to get it back, mostly allowing for curing time of the liner. That's why we stole an extra fuel tank off a LCF that a customer was scrapping and use it to have one ready to go.

Get an IDS on it and verify fuel trims for each injector and perform relative compression( or manual compression). Also check secondary fuel filter housing for any metal floating in the fuel, along with any rust. If compression is good across all cylinders, it probably needs a fuel system. If any cylinders are low, it probably needs a complete engine. I have in my bay currently a 08 F-450 that the customer already installed a #8 injector and both EGR coolers, but still had a miss. Relative compression was down 17% on #8, #8 injector was +18% on fuel trim, and the secondary housing was filled with a combination of mud, rust, and metal. It's getting a complete motor, new low pressure fuel pump, and fuel tank is getting swapped for one that's already been cleaned and relined.. oh and it's customer pay

Broken EGR Pipe Bolts
Chad_Kelsoe replied to Keith Browning's topic in 6.7L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
I've gotten pretty good lately where I don't even have to remove the intake or PCM to get the EGR cooler out. Guess it helps having small enough hands I can reach back in and loosen the EB sensor tube, then pull the cooler slightly out and get the harness off the studs. I then made a PVC u-pipe to help remove the core from the housing. I've been lucky and only broke the EGR supply pipe bolts once, and I've probably done around a dozen or so coolers, plus several engine tear downs. -
Heat Shield for EP sensor
Chad_Kelsoe replied to Chad_Kelsoe's topic in 6.7L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Vin-1FD0W5HTXEEA18036 Base # on EP sensor is 9J460 . It's not quite like split loom, its more of a form foam with reflective insulating tape with an plastic clip to center it on the harness. If I can't find it though, it looks like I'll use some split loom and insulating tape. Just trying to see if I could find it separate from a harness due to the fact that this repair is under warranty. -
Anyone had to replace one of these yet? I got a 2014 F-550 with a faulty EP sensor. During removal, I noted that the heat shield that goes around the connector is missing and my pigtail has melted the plastic. My parts guy can't located it. Any ideas?

Yet another job that got OUT OF CONTROL!!!!
Chad_Kelsoe replied to run6.0run's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Not sure on swapping the head bolts for studs one at a time, but I do know that the Ford long blocks coming with new injectors, high pressure pump, pump cover, oil cooler, etc. All you swap over is turbo, intake, and EGR cooler. -
Yet another job that got OUT OF CONTROL!!!!
Chad_Kelsoe replied to run6.0run's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Per PTS, cylinder block flatness is .004 across the total area, .002 across a 5.9"X5.9" area, and .001 across an .98"X.98" area. Spec for the cylinder head is .004. -
Reminiscing Some Of The Big Three's Automotive Fiascos
Chad_Kelsoe replied to mchan68's topic in The Water Cooler
How about the plastic intake gaskets GM used during the mid to late 90's? Can't tell ya how many 4.3/5.0/5.7 engines or 3.1/3.4 engines I did. I did come across the lisle tool that made those 3.1/3.4 intake jobs so much easier. -
No I haven't. Any idea how to do that? Been with Ford a short 2 1/2 years and have yet to flag a Vin like that yet. Also my 2012 with DEF got denied too. Truck is a lease truck, customer only has 2 months left before he turns it in and said he didn't have the money to do it. Probably need to flag it also.

Well my 2015 truck with gas in the fuel system was a no sale, they sold it to an auction company. Boss got me 2 hour diag on it at least. Got the heads off my 5.4 with oil in coolant, no signs of head gaskets causing this issue, and block and heads are flat. Hotline wants me to put new head gaskets and oil cooler on and reevaluate the concern. Problem is customer bought it with an 84/125k mile warranty. However, according to ESP it should have only had a 72/100k mile warranty due to it being an incomplete vehicle. So with 101k miles on it ESP is denying the claim, and the management is trying to figure out who's paying. I'm thinking if we pay for it, I'm gonna push to install a long block. Still working on getting my retail 6.4 done. And just pulled a ticket for a 2012 truck that customer states ran rough and died and wouldn't restart. Customer called my service manager to inform him that his son put a gallon of DEF in the fuel tank. Plus being promoted to shop foreman a few months ago, I get to help everyone else in the shop with their crap. At least they compensate me for that though.
