i had a 74 highboy with that pocket in the bed. right side of the bed, lower portion. it worked well for keeping chains and stuff in it. aside from the fact that was the only part of the bed that DIDNT rust out..... that gave me flashbacks to the 8.50x16.5 split rims and doing tire changes when i was 10...

they actually are quite comfortable. much better than the set of pallets i nailed together to make one a few years ago, and much safer

I have a growler, and used it a few months ago on an 8n starter. as for the headset deal, Delphi has had it on the market for about 3 years now, a headset with a display on the glasses. looked very nice, but the pricetag was very, very high.

the T2 is a rather easy test, if you have worked on most lines of diesels and have a basic understanding on the systems. a couple of guys i know that only worked on 2 strokes struggled, but did fairly well. the L2 test, in my opinion, was difficult, but it got my brain working. i left with a smile on my face, simply because i had not had a good brain workout that day (and i was going to the bar, but thats not the MAIN reason i was smiling /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif ) of all i have taken, the L2 was likely the hardest one i took. aside from the service consultant one, but that was because i was resisting the temptation to put in answers i felt were needed, not what was politically correct.

Shame on the last dealer that touched this truck
Joey Kaylor replied to Tony302600's topic in The Water Cooler
i have been spending the last year hiring, and then firing, techs with a piss poor repair attitude. they will break something, not tell me, and think that it wont be noticed. they dont give a shit, cause its not them that is looking bad in the customers eyes, its me. it really pisses me off when i have one use the whole "its just a piece of shit car, no one cares" attitude. i have one four year tech, and one that started four months ago with me. the one that started four months ago has hellacious potential, if he will mature enough to realize it. being 20, full of piss and vinegar, and cocky as hell is a bad combination for a mechanic, but i was like that six years ago. i just hope that he will listen to some advice and buckle down. the four year tech is doing very good, he is meticulous on jobs. i am getting ready to start to break him on diesel work, but we are taking it slow on him for now, i dont want to scare him /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif he kinda freaks out when i talk about yanking the cabs for heads and stuff, since most of the trucks we service are dumps or bucket units. i have seen alot of shady work from dealers come through here, but if you think it is bad from a place that has all the factory repair info and tooling, you should see the hacked shit that comes in from other indies! its not the place, but the techs. unfortunately there are several things that are not taught or emphasized anymore: work ethic, pride, respect, or reliability. most people would rather find the easy way out, and blame their faults on others. -
damn. it has become standard practice in my shop to do a charging system test on ANYTHING coming through the door for more than a LOF. even then, we usually do it. with a microvat, it takes minutes, and has sold untold numbers of batteries and borderline alternators. it will make you taste bile in your throat!

Vehicle mileage before failure
Joey Kaylor replied to HGM's topic in 7.3L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
highest 6.0 i have worked on is 120k, it got traded in when the owners ran it out of fuel and filled it with OR fuel from the tank in the bed, only to dump in about 2 gallons of water with it. it trashed every single injector on the truck, so they added four bottles of Stanadyne and drove it in on trade. that truck was the strongest 6.0 i had ever driven, and i had seen it since it was at 22k. first gen 7.3's around here are in the 250-350k range, most use some oil, but still pull like a bastard. all are in rollbacks or farmers flatbeds. second gens are in the area of 200-400k, i have one farmer in the area with a pair of 99 F550's that are at 225k, and he swears he will repower them when the engines pop. those trucks are probably the stoutest cattle trucks around, and they are built to take the abuse. the new superduty is not liked around here, mainly due to the body design. we have a few customers getting 6.4's, and have had a few in for warr. work so far, i aint seen them. on a side note, i had a civic in yesterday with 620000km on the clock. kinda freaked me out, till i realized the car was from canada, and it was in km not mi. -
what was the date of the owner letter? they have not received a letter, and i doubt they will. i had to tell most of my customers about the cruise switch harness recall, and about 80% of them didnt get a letter.

can i have some info on the 3v injector recall? i have done two for customers so far, and would like to see what ford's stance on reimbursement is gonna be. most likely they will say i did it wrong and deny it...... it aint showing up in ALLDATA yet, and i would like to get the paperwork going for my customers if possible. thanks!

fuel-coolant cocktail
Joey Kaylor replied to JAKE_MORSE's topic in 7.3L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
replace every single cup, do all inj. seals also, flush the cooling system several times to clean out the fuel, change all hoses, and you may want to do an oil cooler. you can do them in the van, the Iron Tite kit is what you need. then check to see why it overheated in the first place. these only go out when pushed hard and overheated, from what i have seen. -

master tech diag equipment.
Joey Kaylor replied to matthew's topic in Tools, Computers and the Internet
for 20k, i assume you got an MT5200, Tech II, and a Mastertech. you are well outfitted for just about anything that comes through your doors, the biggest thing is keeping them up to date. the MT5200 is a nice tool, learn to use it and all its functions and it will speed up diagnostics. just be warned the battery lasts about 14 minutes off the vehicle. the touch screen is sensitive, so make sure it is stored well. -
there is another way around that, instead of using tweakNT. you can download the installation software onto an XP Pro machine, then transfer all files to a USB drive, then install on the other machine off the USB drive. i am running Vista Premium, and have not had any other issues since installing that way. i had to go and install all of the cal files, and you have to do them off the internet, the DVD will not allow it to be done.

i did two reflashes yesterday, and did a set of keys. so far, so good. i'm gonna try to do a bunch more in the next few days, and let ya'll know. the installer is the biggest issue to overcome with Vista.
-
i have been running IDS on vista for two weeks now, and aside from the occasional lockup, its working fine. i am still testing out the reprogramming issues, but other than buying a USB cable for my VCM, its not given too many issues.

Reflashing Used FICM's
Joey Kaylor replied to Bruce Amacker's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
you should be able to get as built data from the motorcraft website, it is available on the info side with the subscription i believe. the company i bought my IDS off of will give me the data as needed, i just have to call or email them and i get a reply pretty quickly. -
who advised it?! there are some damn smart people on there, then there are also cocksuckers. i want to see this thread!

charge coolers blowing: beeing seen alot?
Joey Kaylor replied to Joey Kaylor's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
yep. no problems so far, gonna run a couple more checks (aka run the shit out of it) for another hour or so before i load the Hursts back up on it. i got it sitting here, i am gonna make up a new set of tanks for it out of aluminum and use it on my explorer. saved me a few bucks on an intercooler for that project! The miracle of the flash...
Joey Kaylor replied to Jim Warman's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
yeah, i get that shit often. usually from some backyard bob, whom has no frikkin clue as to what is going on. but, if i have a customer come in that has had work done by another place, i always want to know what they did, in detail. that way i know what has been done, and it plays a part in my diagnostic strategy. starting blind on a problem, from scratch, sometimes works great, but most of the time it bites me in the ass. the SM for the ford service dept. was wondering why i said that CAC could be changed in about an hour though. he kept on telling me that i was full of it, it takes 5 hours. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/flamethrower.gif -
The miracle of the flash...
Joey Kaylor replied to Jim Warman's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
i have turned several drivers into lovers of the 6.0 now, after the inductive heating flash. there was this one truck, had been in several times for a low power when cold complaint to one of the local dealers a few months back. with it being a fleet truck, they told the guy to let it warm up and quit abusing it! this was about three months ago, and the flash had been out for a while then if i recall. i checked the calibrations, and it was one before the run-on injector one! popped it with a flash, and he came back loving the truck! i drove it, and for a crew cab with about 8klbs of tools in the bed, it squalled the 1-2 shift rather loudly. he was nice and happy, and that crane company is coming to me for a decent amount of service work, even if its still in warranty. this was the same dealer that told him that there was nothing wrong with the front end, when i replaced these wheel bearings: i really think that there is a serious problem with most SM's that if someone comes in with a diagnosis from another shop, they immediately decide that is an incorrect one, and dont even bother to fucking check things. -
its been a while since i have posted on here, but i got a strange one for ya: 2007 F450, blew the charge cooler tank clean off of it. the hot side is what blew, the tank was badly warped on the flange. driver said he heard a pop taking off from a stoplight, and lost power. when i pulled it out, the tank was still attached, but blown partially off the core. inside the tank, the reinforcement rib was broken also. i have installed a new core (truck only has 2700 miles on it, but the dealer could not get it in till tuesday, and we had to have this truck back in service) and driven it, with no further problems, but would like to know if there is any other tests i should run to verify that its not overboosting at some point. the boost test ran fine, and i am gonna run the EGR test just to have some experience on it, and to see if its sticking any. of course, its an ambulance, and sits idling most of the time too. they still aint figured out how to set that park brake to kick the high idler on!

i am trying to find a 4.5 to install in my ranger when the 4.0 takes a shit. although, it has lasted 125k ROUGH miles, we shall see. either that, or drop a 6.0 in my fox body /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/flamethrower.gif

yeah, us indy's get them too. i have customers that drive for 3-4 hours to have work done, and will hang around while its being done (yes, even on a damn head gasket job on an F550. that is really fun....) although i will have to say, the ones that come to us have no problem spending the money. we have two customers that bring us every piece of equipment they have due to us fixing a truck that was on the verge of a buyback. we have a big issue with local dealers and lack of repeatable repair results, so there are a few local owners that come to us and pay to have it fixed instead of being done under factory warranty. hell, that last batch of recall letters that went out on the rangers and crown vics (that stupid wire harness replacement instead of replacing the switch) wound up with us having 6 calls the very next day after i got mine for my ranger! our local dealership parts dept. manager was rather pissed off when i called and ordered 20 of the wire harnesses, because i tried to get some of the customers to go and have it done, and they told me they would rather pay for the parts than bring them in! there are two dealer techs that have their own following at the two semi-decent dealers in this area, and they basically run the SM's dispatching work due to the fact that if they left, the dealer would have no techs that would do the work.

Tricking IDS by Mimicking XP Pro
Joey Kaylor replied to Bruce Amacker's topic in Tools, Computers and the Internet
if the copy that is listed here doesnt work, email me at protocol@protocolauto.com and i will be happy to send you the known good copy i have. when you get it, you will need to run it, and it will ask you on the setup screen how to configure. tick "XP pro to XP pro" cause for some odd reason, there is no option for XP home. when it finishes, reboot, and it works great. i have installed it on two laptops with XP home, and havent had an issue yet (aside from the v 48 update, but that was due to the IP config issues that we got straight finally)
