So today I got my first 6.4 in for service, a lof, fuel filters and the flamethrower recall. I did the lof, replaced the filters (let me add that getting the bottom one out on this 4x4 f 450 was no fun). I went to start the rig, it started then died. It went into a long crank and the wrench light came on with a p0216 in cont. This was a fuel control ckt code. I removed the lower filter and tried to make sure it was in correctly, it was. It ended up being an air pocket. You guys seen this? Also I was not able to get the recall done as IDS told me that I had to reflash the TCM first. Only problem was that there was no option to reflash the TCM! I called hotline, after about 5 min. I was told that this is a known software concern with ids on some rigs, and to release the rig to the customer with the open active SAFETY recall! I was always under the idea that if it was a safety recall we had to do it before releasing the vehicle. Also one more rant, I had it beat into me at class that this vehicle did not have a PCM, it was an ECM and a TCM seperate. I remember that it was brought up many times in class, so why can't the clowns that are digging this grave for the blue oval back in dearborn at least follow the info that was beat into us, it was called a PCM throughout the recall and in the scantool. GRRRRRRR. sorry so long guys.

wireless VCM
jaysonfordtech replied to eastendpowerstroke's topic in Tools, Computers and the Internet
I am all in for that! We have gone through one toughbook, and about 5 ids to vcm cables in the last year. The boss would gladly give 15 bucks to save $70 5 times over. -
Rough idle, lack of power when hot
jaysonfordtech replied to ErickBaker's topic in 7.3L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
You can do it manually with the valve covers off. Just unplug one injector at a time and judge the change. I had to do this a few times before we got a box. -

What scan tool are you using? Have you tried looking at the perdelta pids? Usually they will pin down suspect injectors. The not being able to run a koer test is bothersome. -
Driving Impressions
jaysonfordtech replied to snw blue by you's topic in 6.4L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Your description was exactly what I thought when I took my pdi out. I also found the delayed decel a bit bothersome. I think the 6.4 felt less snappy then the late 6.0’s. I was also impressed with the price, I think it was almost 10 grand for the engine and trans. -
Hotline changes...

Man that 9600 cap is hard to hit. I have tried. That is a ton of parts and the labor doesn't add up to much. -
Does it act up with the egr unplugged? I would really be taking a look at the IAT 2 sensor for carbon, verify maf voltage is correct. Are you sure that the vgt is operating correct? Like ford doc said the Icp connectors are a problem as well. Good luck

Fordstar material questions
jaysonfordtech replied to Cetane's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
The pictures are like a train wreck, you don't want to look but you have to. Damn that is going to be a bit tight to work on. -
Green car congress website had an article today about cummins making engines for under 8500 gvw for dcx. Perhaps ford is looking to field a similar product.

If I remember correct it was something about the methylethelkeytones in biofuel and mixed diesel/ biofuel that was causing the problems. We have not seen any here lately, but we have had a truck that was running bio that had to have several injectors and a tank replaced at another nearby dealer if I remember correct.

I took the t2 and t6 with a motor age study guide. They were both not that difficult. The l2 did not have a guide at the time I took it so I don't know if a guide will help. I found that I had to rely on the knowledge I got from tech school on pt pumps and other hi pressure fuel injection systems. There were about a third of the questions on heui injection systems.

I would pull the cab. It takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. Once the cab is off it is a straight shot at the injectors.

I think I remember being told that way back when you use to be able to adjust the air gap on speed sensors and for that matter cmp sensors on the 7.3 dit. But this was on rigs out before I got into this in '98

Huntsville vs Indianapolis
jaysonfordtech replied to Keith Browning's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
I'm not sure who did it, but I would love to get my hands around the neck of the guy who decided to use a cheese grader to do the final machine work on the bed plate and block of the early 6 liters. -
I love my topside creeper, some of the best money I have spent.

Hot CAC Tube Won't Stay On
jaysonfordtech replied to Keith Browning's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
I have seen this before also. I found some have a map that is not correct, but most are just turbos that stick hot only. I have had some I had to drive for 15 or so miles at 70 on the interstate. -
I just ran across this article about cummins building a small diesel for an unnamed company. Any guesses about who it is? http://www.greencarcongress.com/2006/07/cummins_to_prod.html

Man you don't know how many times I've asked myself after the 4th crewcab dually in a row why I didn't go to work for a honda store, lol. Well according to my svc writer who use to be at an acura store the customers are kinda like lincon customers, they can hardly afford the payments let alone repairs. Living large on midrange pay. I think non flat rate may be ok, but I hear that the asians are even lower on warranty repairs then ford.

Recurring P2285...
jaysonfordtech replied to Jim Warman's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
I had the same thing, called hotline after capturing it on ids. I was advised to replace the connector and the sensor, as they were both updated. I was working with a 2003 f series. -
Yea I misread it , but it looks like it's a more of a drivetrain then the di warranty.
-
Good call, yep bumper to bumper. I guess everyone else will be getting a chance to catch up to us diesel techs in warranty hours. HA HA HA. I am soooo glad I decided to go back to college. There will be some serious crying going on by the non diesel techs.

egr valve zero position relearn
jaysonfordtech replied to jaysonfordtech's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Yes it had a sticking turbo. I just had not heard of this procedure before this guy at hotline said it. Yes it was part of the recall. -
egr valve zero position relearn
jaysonfordtech replied to jaysonfordtech's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
I wasn't mixing up my terms Jim, that's why I posted this. I had never heard of any egr learn procedure. I had just replaced the valve a few weeks prior for excessive carbon and I thought perhaps I had forgot to clear codes after my active command post repair to verify flow, so I called hotline and that is when he told me about this new procedure. I still don't know if he was feeding me a line, but I thought I could toss it out and see if you guy's had heard anything. I'm not so sure about the 6.0 being a good motor. Maybe deep down it's a good engine, perhaps as a boat anchor in about 100 feet of water. This engine launch in 2003 was the motivation I needed to get back in college and get my bachelors. I am sure I'm not the only ford tech that saw this boat heading for the iceberg and decided to head for the lifeboats. -
Stupid Customer Tricks - Part 3
jaysonfordtech replied to Keith Browning's topic in The Water Cooler
Jim you wrote... Jayson, as you may have guessed, I can be rather outspoken.... I have the same problem, my bulldog mouth overrides my chihuahua ass. I got deleted from the FMC message board for a post named another broken promise about ford running away as fast as they can from last years promise of 250k hybrids. I guess they did not want that info out on fmc dealer.
