Good reading! I also saw an ssm on an oasis recommending reducing the oil change interval on trucks using "high sulfur fuel" to 50%!!! On a couple of the links I read that sulfur leaves acidic or caustic contaminants in the oil which is quite possibly the answer to your question For what its worth, I too wish we could get better information out of Ford when we need it and a straight answer would be nice. Personally, "I don't know" is an acceptable answer over somebody's half ass theories.

So I broke out the ol Diesel Tach/Timing Meter (still in perfect working order) and discovered that the injection timing was at 1.4 degrees BTDC. Specification is 8.5 degrees at 2000 RPM. I couldn't adjust the pump beyond 4.5 degrees because when Jasper rebuilt the engine they mis timed the fuel injection pump drive gear by two teeth. Nice, eh? /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smhair.gif Runs great and does not smoke anymore except under full throttle. And after replacing the GP module and servicing the batteries it fires right up hot or cold. Ran great but what a dog. LOL

I agree about the base engine concern if the intake runner idea checks out okay but I thought those had position sensors? Hey, I'm a diesel guy what do I know! Did you run a relative compression test that might indicate a cam timing issue?

Okay guys, I stepped into the time warp machine and I can't get out! I remember running into the old 7.3s with warm starting problems and there was a problem with the shunts or the module assembly??? All 8 glow plugs are good but this thing just blows smoke and wont restart unless you have just shut it off or it's stone cold. Cant find the manual anywhere and I also want to look at the temp sensor for the system.... anybvody remember which of the three it is?

I noticed the lack of info in the engine running changes by year page and cant find any info from International or Ford. Let's see what we can come up with Heres a few I noticed -New FICM harness and additional turbo heat sheilding -No MAF sensor, IAT sensor in it's place -EBP sensor moved to the center of the left valve cover -

6.0L Maximum Boost Spec?
Torqued_Up replied to Keith Browning's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
This is all great info and I am glad to finally know the deal but I have a brilliant suggestion for the boys at Ford. Why not put this specification in PRINT like in the PCED and add checking for over boost to the Diesel Diagnostic guide as a test? Print the specification there too! Too much to ask for I guess? /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/rotz.gif -
I know this doesent exactly fit your scenario due to the codes but I recently had a truck with sludged injectors, over 100K. Had one dead injector and two that were on their way. This was enough to keep the truck from starting. It seemed to not want to start when warm or during the day but cold starts it did but only after a lot of cranking.

/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/rofl.gif Are you seeing the quick disconnect fittings going bad or the actual pumps themselves? I don't see any reason for those fittings to be honest with you. They make a simple component more complex than it needs to be and of course it's the extra doo-dads that fail.

It may just be me but have things quieted down a lot lately or what??? Since having done many recalls it seems that many of the once daily repairs like EGR valves & EBP sensors have all but vanished! I am only seeing the occasional oil leak and a few oddball failures.

Modification funnies...

Speaking of aftermarket filters, a recent customer complained that his engine was always dirty and wanted to know why. I inspected his truck, oil film on everything including the underside of the hood with a light coating of dust and heavier on the drivers side. Filthy!Turns out the dude has a heavy foot so every time he lets off the go pedal and all that charge air comes rushing back out it picks up the crankcase vapors from the breather and straight out his K&N filter which is sitting in an open air filter box sucking in hot engine compartment air. -
Cool scopes for sure but they don't list any prices that i see which would help convince me to buy one for myself. Our shp has one but it's the old clunky type with the light source and its been a little beat up on over the years. Good link

Ahhh, the 'ol plugged EBP tube. Don't see tooo much of that with the 6-0h. Dude I feel for ya. I hate those jobs that kick your butt for days. Hope you have some hair left /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smhair.gif

What software version are you running? We just installed B39 and it seems to be running ok but it's only been a few days
-
I'll tell ya, I have seen almost no base engine failures with the 7.3 either and as time goes on I get more and more impressed. The only failures I saw were customer caused. Saw a few seized valves and broken rockers and bent push rods but other than that nothing. These engines also seem to hold up to upgrading very well from what I have seen.

Surging and Stalling

So what you are saying is ahhh, we have another potential wiring nightmare on our hands? Greeeeeaaaaat! Good jOb FoMoCo! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbup.gif Or is Mazda responsible for this one since they build the cab? This is starting to sound like a design requirement at Ford. I think Chevy and Dodge sent engineers to work for ford to design bugs into their trucks so I don't think it has anything to do with the people south of the border either. Just kiddn /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif and I did it in english!!! Anyway thanx for the heads up, pic's ??? -
Extension tip on 5.4 3v spark plug
Torqued_Up replied to sixturbosix's topic in All Gasoline Engines
That's a switch! Usually the spark plugs fly out of these engines on their own. Replaced quite a few cylinder heads myself. I was watching the FordStar broadcast during lunch on the 3-valve engine and setting up the cams and the chains. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/eek.gif e-eeeesh! Thanx for the warning. I don't want to have to pull one of those apart if I can help it. -
I think you are right on that spec. I just ran through that coolant over flow TSB and that was part of it looking for a leaking EGR cooler.

Oldest or Least Used Tool?
Torqued_Up replied to Keith Browning's topic in Tools, Computers and the Internet
I have an original Super Star Tester II! It's a little beat up but it should still work. I bought it used and it was already out dated at the time because the NGS had just come out. I only used it to set FIPL switches on 7.3 idi's with E4OD trannies. It has been buried and unused probably since 1995! -
Back Pressure Valve
Torqued_Up replied to Keith Browning's topic in 7.3L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
I ran into the same thing last week. I agree that this is kinda stupid. I mean where to the reman builders get them when they need them? Some customers dont have the scratch to replace a $1600 turbo! -
That's pretty interesting. Since most of us live eat and sleep Dealership we don't normally look for this kind of stuff unless we own one. Her's the kicker though, I don't even know what our dealer charges for this stuff like filters. Well I know the air filters are about 95 bucks! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/eek.gif Does Wal-Mart have them too? The stock filters are good but I think they are too much money at the dealers.

Sounds like you need a hug! If you can't fix a truck, make a post and we will try to take the logical approach. It's just a machine, don't let it get to ya... but when I have a bad day it sometimes is best to put it aside and go out with the guys for a brew or two and yuk it up!

Fuse Panels and Idiots!
Torqued_Up replied to Keith Browning's topic in Body, Chassis and Electrical
Hey that wouldnt be Dejana truck body would it? The bodies are decent but their wiring has always been bad. Well not all their trucks but I have seen a few that were really messed up. -
That is a good trivia question since model year productions typically begin with the ninth or tenth month of the previous year but now that you mention it. I have never seen a 6.0L truck or a 6.0L engine build date that was in 2002. I have seen quite a few 2003 trucks with the same old harness issues. I just use the harness listed in the recall and add some conveluted tubing to the FICM connector take outs. The harness already has that plastic collar and caps on the connectors.

I had a water pump pulley loosen because I didnt clean off the paint on the mounting flange, threw the belt and the customer was pissed! Watch out with these remans!!!!!
