  1. I was told that if anything other than merc sp was put in a 5R110W, then the unit should be considered junk and changed out. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/shrug.gif

  3. I view this thing with optimism. I have been to the diagnostic rodeo quite a few times in my career. So if I am following a pinpoint test I know to have the evtm open and verifying what is being asked of me test. If an ohm check is required I know I need to be load testing and or voltage dropping the circuit in question. With that said let's say I don't have an '09 pc/ed in the shop and I am just a poor 'ol country boy so I don't have a lap top and the nearest computer is in the break room. If I am working on a brand new whatever and I have to diag a code I've never heard of and the pinpoint test has a boat load of yes/no deals, then I am going to save a lot of walking if I can do it all from the IDS on the driver's seat. Now I see that as a gigantic benefit. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbup.gif For all that see it differently then we just agree to disagee. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif
  4. Quote: A tip I've used quite a few times with weak crankcase oil leaks is to pressurize the crankcase with the outlet of a shop vac. Applying 1-2psi to the crankcase while it's idling in the bay really lights up a leak and saves a ton of diag time. Block off the crankcase vent to the left valve cover and stick the hose into the oil fill tube. It works! Just make sure no one has ever used that vac to suck up brake lathe shavings.

  9. This is frickin' awesome, we have come along way from the EECIV monitor setup! Quote: To: All Ford and Lincoln Mercury Dealerships Subject: Announcing Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PCED) Manual with Interactive Measurements on PTS ANNOUNCEMENT Ford Customer Service Division (FCSD) and Rotunda Tools are pleased to announce the launch of Powertrain Controls/Emissions Diagnosis (PCED) Manual with Interactive Measurements, available exclusively on the PTS website. Interactive Measurements enable PCED to display vehicle sensor data, such as a Parameter Identification Data (PID), directly within the diagnostic test steps of the Manual. The technician will also have the option to perform and record voltage and resistance measurements within the PCED, as well as actively command vehicle components as needed to support diagnosis. Integrating vehicle diagnostic data with service procedures eliminates the need for the technician to switch between applications and/or separate computer systems in the service bay, saving time. Diagnostic data from the actual vehicle is displayed in the pinpoint test, allowing for quick yes/no decisions. REQUIRED EQUIPMENT No new software or hardware purchases are required to enable Interactive Measurements. Technicians will need: A computer loaded with IDS version 53 or higher Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher Internet access to PTS (wired or wireless internet connection) VCM (Vehicle Communications Module) VMM (Vehicle Measurement Module). This is optional and allows interactive voltage/resistance measurements. VEHICLE COVERAGE Interactive Measurements are available in the online PCED for the following vehicles: 2007-2009 model year Gasoline engine vehicles (except Escape/Mariner Hybrid) 2007-2009 model year Diesel engine vehicles (except 4.5L Diesel Low Cab Forward) HOW TO GET STARTED A quick tutorial on using Interactive Measurements is available within the online PCED for each vehicle program featuring Interactive Measurements. Open the PTS website and select a covered vehicle program (as defined above). Go to the PCED tab for that program. Select "Click Here to Learn More" on the splash page. QUESTIONS Questions regarding Interactive Measurements and supported vehicle programs should be directed to Tony Webb at (313) 323-0333 or twebb16@ford.com.
  10. Quote: Now that Bruce mentions it I would like clarification as to HOW the larger drain tube is supposed to affect coking. Now Dave, not that your reply wasn't a technically accurate response but the true answer is that it's filled with "magic pixie dust" and should be handle with love and care during installation.
  11. I like the idea of harvesting energy from waves.

  13. Tear it apart and look at the ring very closely, if the slot where the pin rides is whollered out then you'll need a turbo. If the ring looks ok no cracks ect. and the turbo is gummed up, then you can clean it. Most of the time what I see up here is alot of rust on the center section and the ring sticks to it requireing some prying to get it off, if that's the case then the center section can be replaced but it's only a couple of hundred dollars cheaper than just replacing the turbo altogether. In either case if you have an old style drain tube be sure to replace it with 6C3Z-9T515-A, it is suppose to help out with oil coking problems in the future. Here is a picture of it on the left.
  14. Ditto on that, I'm up to two dozen even on these now.
  15. That's good news for people who love bad news.
  16. The captions are as funnier than some of the pictures, some of those looked like a wild ride for the operators.
  17. One thing I have noticed on these early 03's is the pump cover will rub on the output tube of the pump and cause serious problems. A replacement cover will have a recess cut out in it to prevent this, it will also come with an IPR valve and it is cheap money, under 150 bucks American. Something to think about especially if you are going to replace the IPR valve, it's 3x that amount by itself.
  18. I watched one drive off with his ramps still down, it was hilarious. He drove completely out of site but you could still here him before he stopped.
  19. Used to love going to the food court in the mall, lots of eye candy.

  22. We still need to be wary of these, parts just tried to hand me a bad one, even though they knew about the quarantine on them. Working on an Eco box ambulance, would of been a good day to do it twice. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/sick.gif
  23. I think the wheels are coming off the train. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/rotz.gif Quote: Date: June 9, 2008 Subject: Stop Sale and Shipping Instructions for: Remanufactured 6.0L Cylinder Head, part number 3C3Z-6049-CARM Questions: Diesel Product Manager – Dan Goering 313-594-7289 IMMEDIATE ACTION REQUESTED – STOP SALE and Quarantine stock of 3C3Z-6049-CARM 6.0L Heads BACKGROUND A manufacturing concern has been found in select 3C3Z-6049-CARM 6.0L cylinder heads. Engineering has identified a production run of 171 pieces that potentially have a valve issue. Distributors and dealers are to inspect their inventory to identify the suspect parts and return them. ACTION REQUIRED Step 1 Isolate and quarantine all stock part number 3C3Z-6049-CARM that have pack dates from 5/1/08 thru 5/29/08. Go to Step 2. (See attachment for a picture of the pack date location) Resume selling stock with pack dates outside this date range (before 5/1/08 or after 5/29/08). There is no potential quality issue with these parts. Step 2 Locate the serial number on the box for isolated stock with pack dates from 5/1/08 thru 5/29/08. It is hand written in the upper left corner of the box. See attachment above for a picture of the serial number. If the first two characters in the serial number are letters, you may sell the part. There is no potential quality issue. Example: AJ035. If either of the first two characters of the serial number is a number, the part is suspect stock and needs to be returned. Examples: 307; 621; F389; P387. Step 3 Return suspect stock to your Powertrain Distributor who will arrange a part exchange. CYLINDER HEADS USED IN REPAIRS Engineering is reviewing what action, if any, is required for suspect parts that have been installed on vehicles. REPLACEMENT STOCK IS AVAILABLE All parts at the supplier have been verified. Dealers should order 3C3Z-6049-CARM from their Powertrain Distributor.
  24. My favorite FMC post was a reply to "how slow are you're shops".... "Shop opened at 8:00, got first call at 9:00 to cancel an appointment at 10:00" Our shop is in bad shape right now. But I must say the 6.0L is paying my bills right now. I love to hear the guys in the shop say they wont work on "coal burners" and being diesel certified is a loosing propositon ect. But when the times get lean they are standing around and I am working uhhmmmm. I am watching things very carefully for sure. It will be interesting to see how smooth the shift from trucks to cars for the mass public goes. I have already had to adjust my household budget twice this year, once for the increase in filling both my Explorers, and again for my home heating oil bill. I could be looking at a $5000 bill to heat my house this year.
