Lower Radiator hose
Keith Browning replied to amailloux's topic in 6.4L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Yes, and it only takes getting showered a couple of times to make you very careful about it. I put my lift drain directly under the hose connection with a trans drain pan then with my 4' prybar I carefully and slowly put the tip in the crack between the hoses and twist to separate. Works for me. -
6.7L Glow Plugs
Keith Browning replied to Keith Browning's topic in 6.7L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Well it seems apparent that a change was made to the cylinder head. If I were to guess this might have something to do with the valve seat and valve failures that have cropped up. I doubt Ford would redesign the cylinder head to change the glow plugs. -
6.7L Glow Plugs

Found it in the Job Aides for 2012 on PTS. 6.7L Glow Plug/Cylinder Head Design Running Change See file attached. This is need to know about stuff. 67L_Glow_Plug.pdf -
In my blown engine topic I mentioned a stop sale on long blocks and that Ford was sending a new set of glow plugs for the engine they shipped to me. Well the difference is clear to see here. The overall length of the glow plugs are the same however the ones they sent have a shorter dimension from the seat to the tip of the plug. So, this means there has to have been a change somewhere in the engine requiring a "shorter plug" but there is no documentation. I did get some stickers warning of the part number of the correct plugs to stick on the valve covers. I was going to measure the difference but I got involved in going home... will do on Monday.

Lower Radiator hose

Yeah, these things should not be difficult to assemble. Not long ago I had a little trouble with one but it eventually went together. After a road test it leaked. Long story short, the o-ring apparently stuck when disassembling and ended up in the retainer clip groove. Stuff happens. -

Usually the bearings are SHOT when they are leaking oil. Performing bearing clearance check will identify excessive axial and radial shaft movement if simply going by feel isn't obvious. One word of caution though, most of the time a failed turbo on this engine is due to either a lack of maintenance or an ongoing fuel dilution of the engine oil. Be sure of which scenario you have on your hands. Review service and repair records. Remove the banjo bolts for the oil feed lines at both turbos before beginning removal. Inspect the bolts and fittings for sludge and in severe cases, the oil will coke up and for a crust in the bolts and fittings. I have seen this several times. The holes in the bolts close up and the bearings starve for lubrication. Such instances warranty coverage may be in question. Nope. They come separately. I have replaced only one of the two more times than the pair together -
I sometimes forget this forum is populated with a lot of Canadians when I see the price of something quoted. "Gee that sounds high."

The only other question is, if you pinch off the CCV hose and drive it, which seal is going to vent the pressure in the crankcase? If you suspect, or want to test to see if you have excessive blow-by, (i.e. excessive crankcase pressure) why not just perform the crankcase pressure test? If it needs a major engine repair, especially under warranty, you are going to need that information. Just saying. Aside from that, knowing what we know about the 6.4L engine, if you have a lot of oil carryover from the CCV it will collect in the charge air cooler. You might want to pull the lower CAC connection apart and see if there is any oil collecting there. -

Come to think of ot Jim I use Brakleen for pretty much anything... except electrical stuff and MAF sensors. And I too have seen an idiot clean his hands with Brakleen. Yes, nuts is the word! -
Ford sued, said to hide truck fuel tank defect
Keith Browning replied to Keith Browning's topic in The Water Cooler
There wasn't a TSB specifically for delamination however TSB 07-24-4 addressed water intrusion in aft-axle tanks due to snow packing on top of the tanks that let water enter through the tank vent. The fix is a severely overpriced rubber tube. That TSB has been superseded to TSB 09-14-4 which eliminated the fuel tank part number. I attached a copy of the TSB to this post for your reading pleasure. Also, we have discussed this topic several times... just do a search for "delamination." As far as these tanks go, there are TWO different issues that I see. One is flat out lining separation where entire areas of the tank are stripped and large pieces of tank lining sit on the bottom ff the tanks leaving the shiny steel exposed - this is seen more on the Econoline midship tanks. The other second failure is predominately found in the 40 gallon aft-axle tanks in the F-Series trucks. The upper surfaces of the inside of the tank rust and cause the lining to flake off in small particles and rust breaks off in granular type particles. Observe these pictures... Ford sued, said to hide truck fuel tank defect
Keith Browning replied to Keith Browning's topic in The Water Cooler
In my opinion yes, and no. Yes - we often see customers complain about repairs after warranty. Some appeal directly to service managers and others contact Ford Customer Service and lodge a complaint -all with varying results. Many are justified and some are abusive to the system. No - in this case I personally am of the opinion that these fuel tanks are an issue and would like to see some kind of an inquiry and study... if this has already been done the results should be made known. I am not sure I buy the use of bio-diesel or additives excuse for tank lining failures from what I have seen. -

The interesting thing for me here is that Coba Landscaping was a long time customer of Warnock Ford, the company I "used" to work for. I have worked on all of their Ford trucks and quite likely replaced a tank or two and an untold number of injectors. Haven't seen this customer in a couple of years now however. Of course, the dealers have nothing to do with this issue but I found this interesting indeed. I know I have seen repeat tank failures on a number of trucks and I wonder if this is also the case here. The age of Coba's trucks place them well out of the warranty period including AWA. I wonder where this will go. -
Ford sued, said to hide truck fuel tank defect (Reuters) - Ford Motor Co has been sued for allegedly selling trucks with defective fuel tank linings over a 10-year period, and hiding the problem from consumers even as it warned dealers. The lawsuit filed Wednesday in a New Jersey federal court said fuel tank linings on 10 E- and F-series truck models made between 1999 and 2008 would "separate and flake off." It said this would clog fuel systems with debris and rust, causing a sudden loss of engine power, and potentially causing vehicles to buck or kick or suddenly stall. Ford in 2007 issued a "secret" technical service bulletin to dealers advising them of the problem, but neither recalled the affected trucks nor offered to repair them for free, the complaint said. "Hundreds, if not thousands," of drivers have experienced the defect, it added. Ford spokeswoman Marcey Evans Zwiebel declined to comment immediately, saying the Dearborn, Michigan-based automaker has yet to be served with the complaint. The F-series pickup is the best-selling U.S. car or truck, while the E-Series is a truck-based full-size van. The complaint seeks class-action status on behalf of the vehicle owners, and alleges fraud, breach of warranty, and unjust enrichment, among other charges. It seeks compensatory, punitive and triple damages, and other remedies. The plaintiffs are Chester, New Jersey-based Coba Landscaping and Construction Inc and its principal Galo Coba. Lawyers for both were not immediately available for comment. The case is Coba et al v. Ford Motor Co, U.S. District Court, District of New Jersey. Just great news as I have my 6.7L long block hanging from my engine crane. I have one of the two long block part numbers that are on the stop sale list but mine is not on the packing date list. Mine was packed 5 days before. None the less my service writer comes to late today and says Ford Engineering called and asked if the engine we got was installed and the truck was gone. No. It lingers in my shop. Anyhow, they would not elaborate but they said there is a problem with the glow plugs installed in the long block assemblies and will send us a set with details. Here is the odd part of the story. Long blocks DO NOT COME with glow plugs!

06 E450 misfire/stalling problem (lil long)

That is what came to my mind when he and I discussed this bus. -
The early turbos had that low whooooooo sound at lower RPM's. If my memory serves me correctly the turbo was modified by adding or removing one fin on the compressor and a silencer ring was added to the inlet. I cannot find any specific documentation to back this up other than the 2004 Running Changes Coffee Table Book that lists "Improved Turbocharger Sound Characteristics."

Intermittent 6.0
Keith Browning replied to Bruce Amacker's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
HP oil leaks like the dummy plug/stand pipe d-rings can start out as intermittent and random but the length of time that this concern represents exceeds what I would think is typical of that failure. Usually when they go bad they progress fairly quickly from my experience. None the less, without concrete diagnostic evidence pulling them out and looking at them can't hurt anything. I agree with Mike that it is electrical as the sync issue seems odd. I recall one truck in my shop years ago had a FICM intermittently not waking up... and at times not shutting down... killing the battery. -
Bedplates and Sealant
Keith Browning replied to Keith Browning's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
I sealed it up today using the WSM instructions - using the anaerobic on the groove, bedplate and block surfaces. Nothing moved or squished out of place except a little bit of sealant. -
I recall the 6.0L having a similar problem with certain "high flow" air filters that would create a disturbance in the the air flowing through/past the MAF sensor causing inaccurate readings. Thinking this is the same.

Maybe but there seems to be a lot of this kind of thing happening in all of Asia and it is not new by any means. As for Filipinos, my wife is 1/2 Filipino and my best friend's wife is from the Filipinos. Between church and the labyrinth of friendships these are some of the most decent people I have had the pleasure of knowing. It is sad to see any group of people being taken advantage of as I am sure that their lives must have been so bad that where they are now is an acceptable alternative. Sad. Yes it is, especially in this day and age. Not knocking your statement Jim. I have made similar observations. And ironically, people who come from the Phillipine islands are "Filipinos." (spelled with an F) If I remember I will ask my Mother in law what that is all about. Funny how I never thought to ask before as this is for sure an oddity. -
