  1. So basically you are saying that if these rads were built better they might withstand all these cooling system situations? I agree... but if the other things you mentioned were not an issue there also would not be a problem.

  3. Obviously there are situations where they keys need to be in the ignition like front end work that requires the steering to be unlocked, driveability or electrical diagnosis and such. But, if you are disassembling the engine or something else the keys had better be on the windshield. The lock-out tag must always be present. My dealer has the distinct honor of being the ONLY dealer group in the great state of New Jersey that is required by OSHA to have to do this. It is due to the repeated accidents as stated above. This is not uncommon for utility and state fleets however. I also understand that Oregon(?) requires this in all repair facilities.

  5. Are we seeing a pattern here? The data link diagnostic procedure has you disconnect modules and plug them back in one by one with module communication failures. Just sayin.
  6. This is the primary reason we are required at my company to remove the keys from the ignition and hang them on the windshield with a lock out tag while working on vehicles. This all thanks to two incidents at our Lexus dealer... something about missing fingers and OSHA.
  7. What kills me it was working PERFECTLY with both of my laptops... until I updated the firmware.
  8. You will need the cable to set up a wireless connection. For what it is worth, the wireless has problems and for me has become unreliable. As much as I love it I had to stop using it. I seem to recall I started having a lot of connection issues immediately after a Teradyne software update.
  9. From what I have come to understand the studs are stronger and will take more abuse than the stock bolts. But I have heard of head gasket failures after stud installations. I imagine some of that could be abuse, some could be improper installation and others due to other problems that were not detected during tear-down and inspection. Regardless, you need to examine what lead to the failure if that is why you are installing studs. It is common knowledge that overboosting these engines is detrimental to cylinder sealing. If you modify the engine or tune it, you are asking for it. If you don't identify the reason for overboosting you are likely to eventually have a repeat failure in my opinion. Sticking turbochargers coupled with outdated engine calibrations are a recipe for blown head gaskets.

  11. I am not sure if this is a "misery loves company" kind of feeling or if I am being narcissistic so don't be too eager to jump in my boat with me.
  12. TSB 11-1-7 is gone entirely due to the release of the new engine calibration that monitors thermostat operation making the diagnosis in the TSB totally un-necessary. The calibration works well as I have had bad t-stats among other things caught by the new calibration come into my bay. We have discussed some of this elsewhere and kudos to Ford. I am not sure if TSB 11-6-6 should necessarily replace 11-1-7 because coolant leaks and improperly installed venturi-tees are not a new problem but if you are looking at this from the coolant leak perspective then I guess it works. I beleive Mr. Chan identified the deficiency of the radiator hose design a long time ago. Apparently there are some knuckle heads out there that didn't follow the directions when installing the venturi-tees. I have run into a handful of so over the years. If we can't get THAT right...
  13. I do all of the truck transmissions but it is not a lot of work in my shop. I diagnosed my third trans for the year which I likely wont get pulled until next week after I get caught up. I have gotten better over the years but I don't do enough to beat warranty time. I actually take time to diagnose them properly and look at everything while I have them apart. I have been bitten in the past by missing something. I can usually get within an hour or two of book time which I am comfortable with. The LAST thing I want to do is have to pull a unit a second time.

  15. Man if you were closer you could come work with me... but things are a little dicey with hiring with the pending sale of our dealership. I really need another diesel tech on my team. We are getting busy again.
  16. Early F-series trucks had a heater that was removed but I don't recall that ever causing problems. The E-series is another story and I have seen 2 of them with shorted heaters cause a stall/no start with a blown PCM fuse.
  17. For less than 1 hours labor in cost you can have the intake hot tanked. That is unless your parts department doesn't mark it up. Having it cleaned is neater for you and more thorough. We have a clean manifold tucked away to use when we need to have one cleaned therefore there is no waiting to get it back to complete the job.
  18. Neither. It runs perfectly and relative compression was all zeros.
  19. Concerning the 6.4L coolant level is as critical as the coolant itself. The front cover cavitation issue and damage to the EGR coolers are no laughing matter. I have a 2009 F450 in with a blown cooler. It was at another dealer about three months ago for a cab off repair and OASIS also shows the radiator has been replaced as well. I guess I am the lucky guy on this one.
  20. Yeah, there is always some asshole getting philosophical with you. I say go fuck yourself! It's my "office" its my money. Just because someone's advice or opinion is free doesn't mean it's a good value. A Snap-On box is superior. It also has a superior price tag. One that is NOW out of my reach however last year I was "offered" $10,000 trade in for my box with a customer loyalty spiff on a new $18,000 box. Seriously? That is almost what I paid for it 16 years ago. This tells you how over priced and marked up they are as most things with the Snap-On label are. I like Brad's example, look around and find a deal. They ARE out there. Like women, a box is a box. You need to find the box you can afford and a box you can live with.
  21. And as I understand, International is using a different coolant in their engines. I am also curious as to what the result of that is. They also use coolant filters, no?
