  1. Recently Ford released TSB 10-12-1 (attached) which recommends testing your tap water to determine if it is suitable for use in heavy duty cooling systems. And I got laughed at in training for suggesting this might be a problem. We finally ordered a box, part number 328-00007 which comes a a sell pack of 25 or 50 packets each containing 5 test strips and an instruction card. I don't need all of these as I need only test my water once or twice... we will probably sell the rest from our retail counter. Well, the test result for Morristown's water failed for hardness and chloride. Now I have sufficient ammunition to finally get my parts dept to find and supply distilled water in bulk. I am starting to think that the SMARTEST way for Ford to have addressed this is to just make available a no-mix coolant that is made from suitable water and be done with it.
  2. I wonder how much they are charging for this band-aid. I guess it is good for keeping a shit bucket on the road a little longer but what about the rest of the pan?
  3. Nice truck, sorry about your penis.
  4. The United States Federal Government has declared carbon dioxide to be a greenhouse gas contributing to global warming. CO2 extinguishers will soon become illegal.
  5. The one peice fitting is installed in production engines starting from: V8 engines: Engine ser# 431736 on 2/9/07. V6 engines: Engine ser# 431705 on 2/8/07.
  6. Got a diesel in that crawler? THAT would be cool!!!
  7. And that leads us to the obvious question as to what do you do in this situation? I am assuming that the sensor is not serviceable from the mirror... or removable to stick it elsewhere.
  8. There's a guy over at the monkeyhouse from Texas with this problem... or so the "dealer says."
  9. Preface: I love what I do. I pretty much like where I work. Have to be careful with my current situation as I have a young family and need to retain my current earning capacity and insurance. Wife is a "stay at home mom" because NOBODY will care for your children like their parents... but she works part time at night. Issue: I am at my 24'th anniversary in the industry (and with my employer) and next year will be 25 - a milestone in many ways. I am thinking "is this all that I am? If I had the opportunity, where would I go from here?" Question: What would you do with the same circumstances? What direction might a guy like me (or you) take in advancing in our industry? Would you run? Run Forrest, RUN! Have you ever thought about this yourself?
  10. Soooooooo... Who has actually had one of these new Ford Diesel engines in for a problem yet? As far as the 6.7L goes it has been ominously quiet at my dealer.
  11. Plus or minus 10% is the magic number as per Ford... but who is to say 9 is good? Remember though, fuel trims are affected by base engine problems as well... which are usually caused by fueling problems... see where this is going?
  12. Yes mike, that is exactly my point and I can't remember shit apparently. Yesterday I priced out a unison ring for a customer pay repair (not common for me) and I was shocked that that metal ring was $161.00! I concede that the part has some machining involved that requires accuracy, but wow!!! I know, I know. Diesels are expensive.
  13. Just out of curiosity what do you guys charge for a unison ring customer pay? Part price.
  14. You simply download MD truck from the same place you download IDS software or install it from the IDS update disks that are shippped to your dealer. You will need to have the appropriate vehicle interface adapter depending on the software level you install. The current diagnostic software (Servicemaxx)requires the new adapter which I don't have and I am screwed. I do however have older IDS update CD's that have the last version on them... I am using the IC4 adapter. I don't think we are going to waste money on the new adapter just to use the software... what, a few times a year? This reminds me... I need to uninstall the current software and load the older version before I need to use it!
  15. Oooooh oooooh! I have a question. If your awesome neighbors wouldn't let you lift a finger with removing the tree because of your busted spine then whose ass climbed up onto the roof to snap some pictures? You gotta admit though it is kinda cool how that one branch snapped off just right and harpooned the roof.
  16. I have had some guys working with me over the years that insist on doing them in chassis. With mixed results. I personally have done them in F-series both ways successfully. I always recommend pulling the engine but ultimately every technician is responsible for his decisions. If a tech in my shop decides to do it in chassis I am fine with that but I don't want to hear any complaints if it comes back leaking. Here in NJ where many of the 7.3L trucks are now old and quite rusty you are almost better off not pulling the engine as you might end up having to replace EVERYTHING you touch. Most customers are already looking for a freebie from Ford and don't want to pay for anything more than a new pan. Such is life.
  17. Opinions please... A 2003 6.0L with a straight pipe turbo back with no catalytic converter and no other modifications. Do you think that the absence of a cat will increase visible black smoke?
  18. The last engine I replaced was due to a HPFP failure. I found debris in the high pressure fuel lines with no evidence of water, rust or other contamination in the supply system.
  19. First off if he doesn't "give a shit" about repairing it properly then why should you? It is a system and should be working in it's entirety. As for the EGT_13 we have had a few sensors fail in a way that they would test fine in the shop but fail when they got hot. You can do all the things the Hot-Line recommends about checking the harness and the connector which is good but on a repeat visit the sensor needs to be changed. I pissed off a couple of customers "doing the right thing" and I prefer to err on the side of customer satisfaction. None of the trucks I put a sensor in have come back again for the same thing. The only thing you should be paranoid about with EGT sensors is to be sure your fuel trims are not out of line and that the engine isn't "sipping" oil.
