Can the dealer see a programmer?
Keith Browning replied to Keith Browning's topic in The Water Cooler

Here is a great pissing match over at the Diesel Stop ---> Can the dealer see a programmer? The sad part is that unless the equipment is installed on the truck Ford will not deny the claim because YOU CAN'T PROVE IT. Why? Because Ford has never officially admitted, stated or taught us in training or any other way shape or form that this capability actually exists and or how to access it. I for one believe that PCM's over the years have had and do maintain some data that is telling to varying degrees... I was insructed once (unofficially) how to get into the PCM and determine whether the last tool to program the PCM was a Ford tool and which one was used but I never got that procedure to work. The only thing close to official intel I know of was when the 6.4L training started there was "talk" of a permanent non-erasable tattle-tale DTC that we could see in the dealership, but we never saw that happen. We aren't stupid. There are usually many signs that point to the use of a non-OEM performance device has been used and every dealer service department is different in how they handle these situations. I know from my experience that Ford will not back me at all... unless the equipment is actually installed on the truck at the time of repair.

This is a good topic and I am surprised it rarely comes up. I am now very curious as to the lack of information on this. There are a couple ideas I have to gain more information on this and we all need to participate if possible. Chose one or both of the following and report back: [*]Each of us could ask our employer if out tools are covered under our company's policy and what the extent of the coverage is. . [*]If you have the time ask your own insurance agent what options if any are available for covering our tools as personal property. (i.e. a rider on your homeowners policy for example) I might even try a "form letter" approach and contact some of the major insurance companies and poll them on this subject... I am not personally interested in insurance however it is not a bad idea as long as it does not cost an arm or a leg. Here is one website I did find: mechanicsinsurance.com

Now that you mention it, I used to have an extra reservior cap that I rigged up to pull a vacuum on the system and it did work. Not perfectly all the time but I was usually able to at least "get a pedal" and from there the air worked it's way out during use... sometimes a second round with vacuum was needed though on tough ones. These days I think most people are replacing the entire assembly which you can buy pre-assembled, filled and purged... at least on the F650/750 trucks they hydraulics are available that way. Been a loooong time since I have done any clutch work on a smaller truck.

High Sulfur Trucks
Keith Browning replied to Keith Browning's topic in 6.4L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Don't forget the lack of that expensive DPF. I thought sulfur provided lubricity and it's negative impact on these new trucks is that sulfur poisons the DPF rendering is useless. -

You can't post in all forums unless you are listed as a tradesman which you fellas obviously are. I contacted the moderators and was granted posting permissions in all forums pretty darn quick. All you need to do is ask I believe but your profile had better provide information about what you do for a living. -

Broken cam sensor
Keith Browning replied to Jonathan302's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
I have had cam and crank sensors break on me. Presuming some or all of the guts have come out you have something to work with. Patience here is required. I recommend spraying the broken sensor with penetrating lube. I have had good success using thread taps which I "thread" into the broken sensor body. Once inserted you continue to lube the bore and gently work the sensor out and in until it comes out. A vice grip clamped onto the tap makes a nice handle. Good luck! -
With my new PC I am seeing the Internet in a new light with new eyes so to peak... I stumbled upon Mike Rowe's web site mikeroweworks.com and found it to be very interesting. Give it a look see.

GENERALLY, THE DEF TANK SHOULD BE FILLED DURING THE OIL CHANGE SERVICE INTERVAL. DRIVING CONDITIONS THAT AFFECT FUEL CONSUMPTION, SUCH AS HEAVY LOADING, TOWING, HILLS, EXTENDED IDLING, ETC. WILL RESULT IN INCREASED DEF FLUID CONSUMPTION AND MAY REQUIRE ADDITIONAL DEF FLUID BETWEEN SERVICE INTERVALS. PROPER REFILLING OF THE DEF TANK IS ESSENTIAL TO PREVENT ADDITIONAL DEF FLUID REFILLS BETWEEN NORMAL SERVICE INTERVALS. PICK-UP VEHICLES HAVE A 5.1 GAL (19.3 LTRS) CAPACITY AND CHASSIS CAB VEHICLES HAVE A 6.2 GAL (23.5 LTRS) CAPACITY. TIP: IF A WARNING MESSAGE INDICATING THAT THERE IS 800 MILES (1287 KM) OR LESS TILL EMPTY HAS DISPLAYED, A MINIMUM OF 3.5 GALLONS WILL BE REQUIRED TO REFILL. A CHART IS AVAILABLE UNDER THE PTS 'SERVICE TIPS' TAB. 2309 - 6.7L DIESEL MIL DTC P0299 SOME 2011 F-SUPER DUTY TRUCKS EQUIPPED WITH A 6.7L DIESEL ENGINE MAY EXHIBIT A MIL CONCERN WITH DTC P0299. THIS MAY BE DUE TO AN INCORRECTLY ADJUSTED TURBOCHARGER WASTEGATE ACTUATOR. PRIOR TO PERFORMING NORMAL DIAGNOSTICS, CHECK THE TURBOCHARGER WASTEGATE ADJUSTMENT. REFER TO WORKSHOP MANUAL, SECTION 303-04D. NOTE: DO NOT REMOVE THE WASTEGATE ACTUATOR RETENTION CLIP DURING THE SERVICE PROCEDURE AS IT CAN EASILY FALL AND BECOME LOST. IF ACTUATOR ADJUSTMENT IS CORRECT, PROCEED WITH NORMAL DIAGNOSTICS. 2308 - 2011 F-250/F-350 AND 2010 F-150 RAPTOR W/ 6.2L GAS ENGINES - CANISTER PURGE VALVE NOISE SOME 2011 F-250/F-350 SUPER DUTY AND 2010 F-150 RAPTOR VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 6.2L GAS ENGINES MAY EXHIBIT AN AUDIBLE CLICKING NOISE DURING VEHICLE PURGE CYCLE THAT CAN BE INTERPRETED AS A BASE ENGINE NOISE CONCERN. USE CHASSIS EARS TO CONFIRM CLICKING NOISE IS COMING FROM CANISTER PURGE VALVE. IF AUDIBLE CLICKING NOISE IS COMING FROM CANISTER PURGE VALVE, UNPLUG THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR TO THE VALVE DURING PURGE. IF NOISE IS RESOLVED WITH ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR TO VALVE DISCONNECTED, RECONNECT TO SEE IF NOISE RETURNS. IF CPV IS DETERMINED TO BE THE CAUSE OF THE NOISE, REPLACE WITH NEW SERVICE COMPONENT ENGINEERING INVESTIGATION IN PROGRESS. MONITOR OASIS FOR FUTURE UPDATES. 2306 - 2011 F-SUPER DUTY EQUIPPED W/ 5TH WHEEL PREP PACKAGE - UNABLE TO INSTALL GOOSENECK BALL - BUILT ON OR BEFORE 6/30/2010 SEE TSB 10-16-05 FOR DETAIL 10-16-05 2303 - 6.7L DIESEL - OIL LEAK AT TURBOCHARGER SOME 2011 6.7L DIESEL EQUIPPED VEHICLES MAY EXHIBIT AN OIL LEAK FROM THE TURBOCHARGER SUPPLY LINE OR FITTINGS. THESE COMPONENTS ARE AVAILABLE SEPARATELY AND DO NOT REQUIRE TURBOCHARGER REPLACEMENT (FITTINGS 6A968, LINE 6B689). IF LEAK IS BETWEEN THE FITTING AND LINE USE BOTH PARTS. THE CORRECT TOOL TO DISCONNECT LINE IS A 3/8 INCH QUICK LINE DISCONNECT TOOL, SUCH AS SNAP-ON LDTSP4 OR EQUIVALENT. TURBOCHARGER OIL SUPPLY FITTING TORQUE IS 20-28 NM (177-247 LBS-IN). PLEASE ENSURE THAT THE LINE IS COMPLETELY CONNECTED AND THE RETAINING CLIPS ARE IN PLACE. 2292 - POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE PROGRAMMING BEGINNING MID-2010, SOME POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULES (PCM) SERVICE PARTS WILL BE RELEASED BY HARDWARE TYPE, NOT BY SOFTWARE LEVEL. USE IDS V67.03 OR HIGHER AND FOLLOW PROGRAMMABLE MODULE INSTALLATION (PMI) PROCEDURE IN THE WORKSHOP MANUAL UNLESS A TSB OR SSM SPECIFICALLY STATES OTHERWISE. BEST RESULTS WILL BE OBTAINED BY USING THE 'ORIGINAL' IDS SESSION THAT WAS CREATED PRIOR TO THE PROGRAMMING ATTEMPT. IF AS-BUILT DATA IN THE ORIGINAL MODULE IS "CORRUPT", THE ORIGINAL MODULE WILL SET DTC'S AND IDS WILL NOT INHALE DATA. DURING PMI, IDS PROGRAMS WITH THE LATEST CALIBRATION FILES, AND THEN CONFIGURES THE MODULE. IN THE EVENT AN IDS ERROR OCCURS DURING PMI, LOCATE AND RESUME ORIGINAL IDS SESSION TO ALLOW PMI TO COMPLETE. IF AN ERROR OCCURS DURING PMI, IT BECOMES NECESSARY TO CONTACT THE TECHNICAL HOTLINE, INCLUDE THE EXACT TEXT DISPLAYED BY IDS IN YOUR CONTACT. 2287 - 6.7L DIESEL - OIL LEAK SOME 6.7L DIESEL EQUIPPED VEHICLES MAY EXHIBIT AN OIL LEAK FROM THE TOP OF THE LEFT SIDE OF THE ENGINE THAT MAY COLLECT IN AND AROUND THE FUEL INJECTORS OR ALONG THE VALVE COVER.
