No double post... I remembered something I apprently never did!

AMEN brother!

I really thought that I brought this up earlier this year when we (at our dealer) individually sent letters to our Congressmen urging them to vote against this. We did this in conjunction with NJCAR and dealers across the state. I eventually received a response from my district Representative who agreed that the manufacturers and dealers have a right to retain some proprietary rights to the new technologies and parts. righttorepair.org

Frequent Regen Diagnostic Tip
Keith Browning replied to Keith Browning's topic in 6.4L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
No, I don't think so because this particular truck always reads "Clean" in the PID. The truck is coming back. The customer made every effort to drive the vehicle long enough once the message reappeared, about 45 minutes. I will bet when it returns it will show well over 500 miles since the last regen has completed... and the loading PID will show clean. I am going to get the HotLine more involved on this one and my FSE is going to be visiting us later this week on another vehicle maybe I can get his input as well. -

Frequent Regen Diagnostic Tip

Okay, makes sense - I wasn't looking at it that way. Perhaps there is more to the current MAF investigation to come. If this truck returns I will be looking at MAF a lot closer. -
Jim, your point was not missed. I get it... not sure if others are following. Take your last post just above. In a situation where sales makes a promise or sells a truck that is, let's simply say is equipped in a manor that warranty coverage is deniable. I spend time verifying and diagnosing concerns, writing up a parts and labor estimate and making my "recommendations" only to lose all of that time and correct the concern at a HUGE time loss under warranty. Shit rolls down hill and it apparently the shit ball grows larger and larger as it is rolling toward us in the service bay. For the record, I haven't sold my employer ANY FUCKING TIME just because I am on the clock. I am paid Piece-Work. I MAKE time and until I do, I can't sell it. Therefore all of the time I spend on a vehicle, chasing red tape and asking for approval to repair a truck is LOST. And for what? Because somebody else made a bad decision and now another one is going to be made? Both will affect MY wallet the most. After all, isn't that what this is really about? ME! If I sell a truck with a lift kit it is good for ME! If I sell a truck with a TUNER it is good for ME! If I warranty this customer's head gaskets it is good for ME! Screw the people down the line that have to deal with the consequences later on. FUCK ME JIM! In a time of recession I cant afford to suck it up any more. And for those who think that the recession is over? Be very careful. We ARE going to go back down hill again before it gets better... if it ever does. Jim - I would love to be sitting next to you in a pub somewhere.

It affects him (and us) because "WE" is a subjective term: WE are part of the dealership team and typically anything any part of that team does in a negative sense affects the entire team. "WE" become "THEM" in the eyes of the customers and Ford Motor Company, therefore anything bad that "WE" do makes "US" all look bad. Assuming Dwayne has a sense of pride, a fair sense of morality and wants to be as professional and successful as he can be, bad decisions and judgments made by anyone at the dealership will affect him because it makes HIM look bad regardless of the extent of his involvement. In this type of situation we risk negative attention from one direction or another. [*] Deny coverage to a customer and you will piss him off, maybe. (many of these clowns are simply trying to see what they can get for free - hell it is worth a try!) . [*]Cover something you shouldn't and Ford takes notice then there will be a list of people who will be angry - Ford, WE, and US. (basically everyone involved regardless of their actual involvement) In either case my friends, "THEY" at that dealer will all look bad when one of "US" does something wrong that "WE" shouldn't have. So tell me Jim, why shouldn't it affect him and for that matter, why shouldn't it affect YOU?

EGT and boost gauges on "03 6.0
Keith Browning replied to STROKER_T's topic in Body, Chassis and Electrical
I don't think I have ever seen an over head gauge installation but I have seen a few a-pillar one's. I like those because they are "right there" in the normal field of vision. -

You could visit the Diesel Mentor directory and look through the listings in accessories or parts... -

My First Catastrophic 6.4L Failure
Keith Browning replied to mchan68's topic in 6.4L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Mike, I read the original post here and, I have to say that there are times when contacting the HotLine is like talking to a wall and other times it is a great learning experience. With that said, and reading your HotLine report, I can only say this was a teachable moment. Personally, I would not have even contacted them for an engine failure. There is no reason to nor is it a requirement. You offered too much information and left your question wide open to be taken wayyyyyy of topic. I know you to be a smart technician. If you know you have a failure, do as complete of a tear down as needed to make a complete estimate and cost cap comparison then fill out the form and let it rip. Save your energy for the prior approval form. I have a failed 6.4L waiting for me after the holiday weekend. I have been there three times already. I feel your pain. -
First 7.3 turbo off
Keith Browning replied to BLittle500's topic in 7.3L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Is there an alignment dowel on that connection? I recall there being one... you may need to make this connection with the turbo unbolted at the pedestal so that you can rotate and align the connection then install and tighten the clamp and then align the turbo to the pedestal and insert the turbo mounting. Loosen the marmon clamp slightly (but not enough to allow separation) before torquing down the pedestal bolts, then re-tighten the clamp last. -
Thermoplastic Oil Pan
Keith Browning replied to Keith Browning's topic in 6.7L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Look at it this way boys. As a Ford technician you now will have five diesel engines to be knowledgeable about. I know the IDI engines are rare now but there are still plenty out there. I think we are currently at a point where these engines are quite complex and servicing them is ridiculously laborious. I don't see things getting much more difficult, just new stuff to go wrong and complain about. Suck it up Buttercups, this is the path we chose! -

Keith Browning replied to Keith Browning's topic in 6.4L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Jim that was actually part of a HotLine response and it is the first of it's kind of information I have seen regarding the topic so I thought it would be good too share. I am not up to speed on this engine either as I don't see too many other than oil changes and catastrophic engine failures... but I am learning. -
black soot in fuel filter housing
Keith Browning replied to sam's topic in 7.3L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
You stated that there is a film on the walls of the filter housing, how about the filter? More importantly how about the oil? Since a 1996 truck should have fuel return lines from the heads and back to the tank (if my memory serves me) leaking o-rings would allow engine oil to mix with fuel and in a 1996 truck the fuel in the tank and filter housing would be dark/black as well. Is the film oily or is it slimy and smell funky which would indicate a biological growth? -
Frequent Regen Diagnostic Tip
Keith Browning replied to Keith Browning's topic in 6.4L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Nice to have your input on this and your statement coincides with that SSM I posted so it is conceivable that MAF concerns will affect regens. Unfortunately I don't think a MAF concern would cause the PCM to request a regen on a non-loaded DPF... or could it? In this topic we have two examples of a frequent regen condition: Aaron's is a true frequent regen and mine is a regen that does not complete... -
Frequent Regen Diagnostic Tip
Keith Browning replied to Keith Browning's topic in 6.4L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Nobody ever mentioned MAF but since you mention it there is this recent SSM: Quote: 2904 - 2008-2010 F-SUPER DUTY - P2463 AND P246C CODES WILL NOT CLEAR SOME 2008-2010 F-SUPER-DUTY MAY EXHIBIT DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES P2463(DPF RESTRICTION-SOOT ACCUMULATION) AND/OR P246C(DPF RESTRICTION- FORCED LIMITED POWER) THAT WILL NOT CLEAR USING IDS OR MAY RETURN WITHIN LESS THAN 100 MILES FOLLOWING REPLACEMENT OF THE DIESEL PARTICULATE FILTER(DPF). THIS CONCERN MAY BE DUE TO MAF SENSOR CONTAMINATION. VISUALLY INSPECT MAF SENSOR FOR DEBRIS (DIRT/OIL) AND FOREIGN OBJECTS. PERFORM MAF SENSOR PCED PIN POINT TEST J TO CONFIRM SENSOR FUNCTIONALITY. PERFORM PIN POINT TEST RB TO VALIDATE DPF FUNCTIONALITY. CONFIRM AIR FILTER, FILTER LID, PCV PORT AND ALL ATTACHING HARDWARE ARE CORRECTLY INSTALLED AND LATCHED. ENGINEERING INVESTIGATION IN PROGRESS. MONITOR OASIS FOR FUTURE UPDATES. -
Frequent Regen Diagnostic Tip
Keith Browning replied to Keith Browning's topic in 6.4L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
The above statement is similar to a vehicle I am looking at now BUT I was told this is ABNORMAL since the vehicle message center shows "Cleaning Exhaust Filter" every day, sometimes twice. Read this carefully: [*]Dist_Regen_C = 327 miles [*]Dist_Regen_Req = 0.06 miles [*]DPF_LOAD = Clean Notice that the last regen was over 300 miles ago, the DPF is showing as clean yet the PCM is requesting regen. Since regeneration is disrupted before it completes the cycle it restarts regardless of the loading. While this truck does do some idling it is probably not the cause of the frequent regenerations nor is the actual DPF load state. I am thinking that a regen cycle has other requirements beyond loading such as temperature of the cat/filter at the time of regen and time at temperature. Otherwise I would have expected the DPF_LOAD PID showing Clear to be sufficient. -
Upfitter Switch Wiring Information
Keith Browning replied to Keith Browning's topic in Body, Chassis and Electrical
Well that is pretty simple to do. Once you obtain the proper resistor it's all crimping or soldering. Are the other circuits for the hydraulic controls already wired in? This is where you need to look at the job and determine how much time you will need. -
Upfitter Switch Wiring Information
Keith Browning replied to Keith Browning's topic in Body, Chassis and Electrical
I have only installed ONE upfitter switch kit and it was a pre-2008 truck. I recall it was 1 hour labor which is generous. I also hooked up one of the switches to the idle control circuit and exposed the wires for the customer while I was in there. This is plug and play stuff.... -

'02 F350 engine R&I,cab off?
Keith Browning replied to STROKER_T's topic in 7.3L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
A 2002 truck with a 7.3L? I wouldn't even consider removing the cab for any engine repairs or removal. I see your concerns for wanting to protect the paint but by the time you have the cab off the engine could be out... or just about.
