I heard it's not nice to pick on stupid people....
Keith Browning replied to Aaron's topic in The Water Cooler
I recall another thread on this very subject led to the conclusion that its "us against turds" and I took that as ALL technicians that care about what they do and the industry against those who don't. We have tossed this around before with the same concerns and complaints and I think we are losing sight of what is important because we are being distracted. I share in many of the same frustrations our vocation has to offer. I have to agree that we shouldn't point our noses in the air and dismiss anyone seeking our assistance or knowledge - as discussed there are GOOD reasons for such communication. I think that for many of us there are certain boundaries that need to be set. You need to decide how willing you are to be forthcoming with information or assistance and determine the best way for you maintain that boundary with respect. For me, I simply got annoyed with the constant interruptions in my day - interruptions in my earning a living. It got to the point that I was looked upon as having a nasty disposition because I would tend to bark at people "for asking" and the requests eventually diminished. This also affected the way I performed my duties which was never my intention. It takes a good honest look into your soul to figure this out and come out with a good approach that works best for you. I hope this helps someone... -
I can see the next Monkey House home brew "fix" coming. It is the EOT/ECT sensor combo harness. Yes! Simply disconnect both sensors and connect this handy dandy jumper into both harness connectors then plug the other end into just the ECT sensor. Problem solved. now the processor will read EXACTLY the same temperature and no check engine light! Fucking brilliant if I do say so! I'll betcha some jackoff WILL try this at some point.

I thought I had posted this image here before but I think it was a front page article... here is a close-up of a severely worn unison ring guide pin slot. Believe it or not a technician "missed the fact that this was worn, cleaned it and reinstalled it. The engine still surged badly. it does not take this much wear to cause a turbo to surge therefore you should be critical of ANY wear you see on a unison ring. It will only get worse so replace it if there is any sign of wear. Cracks are also common especially on unison rings that are sticking or outright seized on the CRH.

o5 Primary belt tensioner concerns
Keith Browning replied to Mbl35's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
First, welcome to the DTS. From your description it sounds like the tensioner arm is failing... the pivot is seizing or the spring is breaking... things we have seen over the years. I don't see anything in our resources to indicate a pattern failure with the tensioners but anything is always possible. Since the original tensioner failed because of the pulley bearing and the two replacement tensioners failed at the pivot this suggests either you have a batch of defective parts, incorrect parts or something with the installation is causing the failure. Did you closely inspect the failed tensioners? Can you see anything about them that doesn't look right? -
This one was potentially going to go wayyyyy off track but we were on our toes today. This F550 would start and immediately the idle would roll from 300 to 800 RPM for 5-10 seconds and then straighten out. It also was reported to stall after stopping, the tech verified that once. DTC's P20e2, P0297 & P1000. Fuel pressure 6+ psi. Passes self tests. The tech corrected the P20E0 by replacing EGT 1-1 but the rolling idle remained. We suspected the HPFP and I recommended pinpoint tests M and perform the high pressure fuel system test. The fuel pressure test would not initialize and the error message said to release the throttle. No APP DTC's - so we started Data Logger looking at fuel and APP pids. We noticed that the APP MODE PID showed "PT" but all of the other APP pids indicated closed throttle. I pulled up on the pedal and the symptom went away. So we played with this a little and apparently you can cause the MODE PID to read "PT" with LESS THAN a 0.1-volt change in any APP PID and no change in percentage. Yes, the pedal is bad but man! Talk about splitting hairs.

300 to 400 ICP Pressure on a 2003
Keith Browning replied to mchan68's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
There is no other way than the one you described. -
Anybody been seeing a lot of the rear suspension members cracking in the middle on these things? We have seen several in the last month or so and two of them completely split while driving. It pulls the tops of the rear tires in against the wheel wells and I am sure it makes a horrendous noise. Ahhhh! Can't you just smell a new safety recall a comin?

I am finishing up a total redesign of the Diesel Mentor site and I am also building some new categories one of which is for chemicals. This would be common shop supplies, Brakleen, penetrating oils and things of the like. What brands or products you you guys like or recommend? I am looking to add website links to this category.

Wow Aaron, that's some crummy news. I have had issues with my back over the years but nothing like what you have going on. I mentioned this last weekend here in the forum and who wakes up with back pain on Sunday? My lower back has been sore all week. I wish you luck in getting your spine straightened out. Good news is I just finished packing a bunch of shirts and your's hits the mail tomorrow with them. Feel better dude!

Ford Opens Engine Plant in Mexico
Keith Browning replied to Keith Browning's topic in 6.7L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
I was going to add a comment that "there goes MORE American jobs out of the country" but the reality is these are self inflicted job losses as you elude to. Once again the union topic rears it's ugly head. I am sure there is a lot more to it like taxes and Federal regulations forcing this kind of thing. -

The Search function works fine... almost too good and that is the problem we sometimes face. If you don't initially get usable results by using the pop-up search box, select the Advanced Search option. Clicking on Advanced Search Tips will give you examples on using better search terms for example, typing in "coolant flow tester" AS A PHRASE WITH THE QUOTES returns the link below and this thread. Just be sure to adjust the date and forum selections as appropriate. The post you were looking for: http://www.forddoctorsdts.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=22763#Post22773

Yeah, my wife was piiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiissed that I just stopped.. or the fact that I could. It took her at least two years and 3 or four attempts. What really helped her was my (then 5 year old) daughter telling her EVERY DAY smoking was bad for her. I had nothing to do with that by the way.

This Thanksgiving (2009) will mark 4 years since my last cigarette. Not one since and I actually hate the smell of cigarette smoke now. Several years before I quit for good I really did not smoke as much as I had for many years. What finally did it for me was watching my father's health rapidly deteriorate over several respiratory infections and then slowly suffocate as he gave in to his advanced emphysema. If that doesn't convince anyone to stop smoking then nothing will. I agree with Yoda.

Amen Jim. And for what it is worth, I have no memories of 1967 other than being ejected from a warm safe place, getting slapped in the ass and peeing on a doctor's necktie. Funny how SOME things haven't changed much.

I happen to like the Flex because it IS different. The new designs and implementation of *new* technologies like direct injection are what keeps things progressing. Just remember that it is the fickle finger of the public's checkbook and government regulation that have the biggest impact on vehicle design therefore you shouldn't be looking for anything related to this discussion to make sense. Personally I could care less if the Ford 6 cylinder engines hold their own to competitive 8 cylinder engines as I look at every vehicle for what it is and how it fills my needs and desires. I would likely never buy any of those over-priced cars to begin with but that is another topic altogether. I will say it is nice to see Ford being less conservative with their design.

Yes, perhaps it did for a few guys and this MAY be telling of what is failing in these modules, then again, it may not. I do find it interesting though and it is possible for a light solder to fail if stressed like being subjected to the inductive heating calibration. My point is that Ford will never back you on a claim if you were to try this under warranty even if it did fix the truck. It certainly LOOKS simple enough to perform but I think we have discussed this before - Ford would likely never let us repair ANY electronic module in the field Personally, I would love to try this myself taking a screen shot of the relative PID's before and after the repair along with a good picture of the circuit board before and after the repair... maybe a shot of the other side of the board showing the DC-DC converters... I rarely have the opportunity with a customer pay module nor do I have a module laying around but it could be worth a free t-shirt and credit on an article to someone who does.

I dare you to try fixing one!

I love what Shawn Hannity has been doing the last three years with his Freedom Concerts - all of the proceeds go into a college fund for the children of fallen military personnel. So far he has raised over $12 million - that's awesome!

The other day I heard on the news while working that three men pulled a guy into an alley, beat the shit out of him and then went through his pockets taking his watch and wallet. As they walked away going through the guy's wallet they discovered his military I.D. card. One of them said "we can't do this" and turned back, returned his wallet and thanked him for serving our country. The "men" took off. Not sure how to feel about this story. You almost want to feel warm and fuzzy but you just can't get passt the fact that this guy just got mugged. He sounded happy in the interview... but was he serving our country defending the right of these guys to beat the shit out of him? Or was what they did excused by the fact that they thanked him for his service and returned his wallet?
