Powdered metal rods
Keith Browning replied to dieseldoc's topic in 7.3L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Good find and info. I was looking in the service manual which made no mention of whether the rods were powdered metal or not, it just says forged. I am sure SOMEWHERE this is stated... I also can't remember the last 7.3L I have had out and apart but I assure you it was before the PMR's were being used. Awesome thread! -
You are not alone Mike, I think they sound like crap too. Annoying like a mosquito. Around here they are usually found on old shit box rice burners that also have a big assed kicker box in the back that makes the license plate rattle and buzz. Way cool junior!

Powdered metal rods
Keith Browning replied to dieseldoc's topic in 7.3L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
All 7.3L engines came with forged steel connecting rods. As far as putting that 2002 engine in a 1995 truck it should bolt right in but it is everything else like the harnesses, fuel system, intake system, modules... not sure what the goal is here but it smells like a can of worms to me. -
HINT: It's a GOVERNMENT PROGRAM.

Theoretical Question
Keith Browning replied to Keith Browning's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Well I found nothing out of sorts. Since it was apart I installed the new HPOP fitting. Runs perfectly starts really quick hot or cold. -
I'll admit I had to look it up... Wikipedia.

Aside from the known leaks - inspections and repairs should be straight forward. I have noticed over the years that trucks that don't run well and trucks that get too much idle time have really foul exhaust odors. For instance a truck with a bad ICP sensor that has been running poorly or has an EGR concern usually stinks. Post repair road tests produce lots of black soot and heavy smells. A truck that is allowed to idle a lot and is rarely driven in a way that the exhaust gets hot enough to burn off all of the crap that accumulates will stink as well. Just some thoughts.

Theoretical Question
Keith Browning replied to Keith Browning's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Exactly my point so when this truck started and all I had done was replace two injectors I was a little surprised. I was just studying the injector section in the Coffee Table book and I suppose it is possible for a spool valve to hang right in the middle but I doubt enough oil could flow through to drop ICP down to 45 PSI in a cold engine. I am sure I will find something else. This was just weird and caught me off guard. Now if you will excuse men, I am late for my un-birthday party! -
Theoretical Question
Keith Browning replied to Keith Browning's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Why yes, there is a point. To satisfy my curiosity. You see, I worked on a truck today with a 6.0L that was towed in (?) for running rough. I discover a truck that has slightly run down batteries yet still cranked but wouldn't start... till I gave it a sniff of an "alternate fuel." It runs and has a heavy misfire. I got IDS hooked up and retrieved DTC's for cylinder #6 and low ICP/cranking... long story short, all diagnostics pass so before even looking at the STC fitting and inspecting all of the high pressure seals I decided to replace the two injectors on bank 2 that I determined were useless and inspect the seals on that bank first while I was there. I did shut it down and tried to restart it but I only got 45 PSI... I decided to see if the engine would start and low and behold it fired up after a little cranking as usual, but it started, on it's own. I let it get warm. Still starts. tried 5 or 6 more times, still starts. So unless this is a giant coincidence and I have one of those STC fittings that is playing games with me I wanted to know if it was even possible for a 6.0L injector to do that. I personally have never seen it and was wondering if anyone else had. The truck as it sits in my bay is "good" at the moment. Do I let it fly if I can't duplicate the no start or do I continue on with my ICP diagnosis? See my point Mike? Since I don't want to screw the customer I will do the intelligent thing and find out for sure. I just wanted to ask. -
Do you think it is possible for a failed fuel injector with no obvious physical damage to cause a no start condition by affecting ICP?

FICM_MPWR minimum voltage is 45 volts. -
I'll take it this is pretty much the same as doing the water pump. The guys in my shop are setting the sub frame on jack stands and raising the body... sound familiar?

Just a tip on Cat C-15 that might apply to others?

I was going to say wouldn't that also cause oil in the air tanks? Great post Gail! It's an obscure fault for sure. -
No politics here. By the way Tony, how's the Koolaid? I really want to avoid a big political discussion as politics can be very polarizing - this is a diesel forum not... well, you know. I'm not going to waste my time debating the petty bullshit already mentioned here. I don't see this as a joke - not at all. I would like to recommend to you Tony that you pick up a copy of Mark Levin's book "Liberty And Tyranny" which is an amazing lesson on true conservatism, this country's founding fathers and our constitution. Our CONSTITUTION which is the envy of the free World which has stood strong for over 230 years. The very Constitution that grants you the right to freedom and the very constitution that our current president, Harry Reed, Nancy Pelosi and a list of other dangerous people would love to eradicate in the sake of power for the "Democrat" party. Do you have any idea how many of your liberties are in jeopardy at this very moment? This is change the foundation of America cannot afford. Don't confuse conservatism with the Republican party as the two are no more alike than Liberalism and the Democrat party are. Where we are headed is closer to Marxism if the people currently in charge of our government have their way. Are you telling me that capitalism and the free market system that has made our society the greatest ever should be abolished and replaced by the beliefs and systems that have historically failed time and time again? You live in a country that allows you to be as successful as you are willing to work for. The country that had made many of the greatest advances in science, technology and medicine. Take away our incentive and shit, maybe we can be as great as fucking France some day! Say! How about that new Ford in-house diesel engine?

The winning number is: 6E7Z-6881-D Adapter Kit - which is the filter housing and the bottom bolted together. (not the small round adapter next to the green arrow)

Funky DTCs on an '08 E-450
Keith Browning replied to mchan68's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Now that you mention it, we had a couple vans in the lot that had been sitting long enough for the batteries to discharge. I did see some PATS codes and one of the trucks would crank but not start until after I rectified the batteries and cycled the key... -
False P1334 & P0488
Keith Browning replied to Keith Browning's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
I also meant to suggest that if "normal diagnostics" fail to find a problem with the EGRET that you spend some time with Data Logger and especially pay attention to the position signal VOLTAGE, widen the display for that PID to make it easier to see excessive variances and spikes in the voltage. -
False P1334 & P0488
Keith Browning replied to Keith Browning's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Wow, that post was over four years ago. Shoot, I don't recall for sure but I think that this was specifically about the false codes. At this point if you are diagnosing a concern I would definitely make sure that your modules are up to date which you did. IF the codes you listed are still coming up I would suspect you actually HAVE a problem with the EGR throttle plate/circuit. I do recall having one go bad. ONE. Have you performed the appropriate pinpoint tests for the EGRTP? -

Um, someone needs to smack this guy upside the head. I would think that breaking it once would be a learning experience, twice it becomes a teachable moment... the third time he should be beaten with the stupid stick! I have broken one or two over the years BY HAND. It sticks with you. Using an air tool here is just silly.

Ordered one today... coming out of Memphis so I wont see it until tomorrow afternoon. Now I am off to inform the Hot-Line of this information. Thank you for the TSB number Larry, that one addresses the 6.0L specifically and for some reason it never came up on OASIS. I also added the TSB file with the other attachments above.

Brad I do hope that you say SOMETHING to SOMEONE at your dealership about this incident. Your personal relationship with your neighbors aside, this is just bad for business and in this economic climate I should think that ANY dealer cannot afford to lose sales, not one. Holy shit! What is this sales person smoking?
