Got a little dispute going on that I need to find a solution for and I need a little more input than I have experience for. I am curious as to what labor time you guys are charging to replace a fill set of 3-Valve spark plugs and what do you charge extra for each broken plug?

Can you believe the knuckle heads over at TDS are still arguing over this? Clickie to see What a waste of time - draining the HPOP reservoir during an oil change. I can't believe people agonize over this kind of stuff. But I do want to know how fast the oil flows through that system end exchanges completely. Didn't we discuss this before? /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/scratchhead.gif

I had the exact same failure last year - cylinder 2 exhaust valve seized in the head and popped the rocker. I recall the same curious data or something similar if I recall cylinder 4 was also missing. I repaired the head and let it rip. I assume cylinder 2 was affecting #4 as it dumped all its crap into the intake.

According to the Hot-Line horizontal EGR cooler failures are common after a failed radiator which this truck shows as having on OASIS. If that is the statistic then so be it... I don't get it because that cooler is basically the lowest component in the system other than the radiator itself. Any how, I bench test all coolers using the test caps and an air regulator which you are supposed to set to 30 PSI/ I carefully warm them using a hand held propane torch and many times they start to leak. Placing them under water has proven to be un necessary for me and you cant warm them. This particular cooler was difficult to detect the leak but there was enough coolant inside of it to create some steam. at 30 PSI the steam barely wafted from the coolant inlet and outlet but at 40 PSI the steam started to move... and at... /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

Oh PLEASE let me know of anything that is not working or screwed up. I have a list of things to fix once I get everything sorted out.

I am chasing a coolant usage condition. Smokes heavily in the morning and it smells like burnt coolant. I have discovered a lot of moisture in the charge air cooler tubes and have removed and tested the vertical EGR cooler... moving onto the Horizontal cooler. Any experiences?

Our tool just pulled the threads off the shaft. Dammit! Do these tools have a warranty? No matter, we need one so off the SM I go to request a replacement. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/rotz.gif

I am still chuckling about the warning in the shop manual about de-gas bottle caps. You know, the one that states the cap is made with components that are not compatible with coolant. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/scratchhead.gif

SOME 2008-2010 F-SERIES SUPER-DUTY VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 6.4L DIESEL ENGINES MAY EXHIBIT A BUCK/JERK OR SURGE CONDITION WHEN TOWING 5TH WHEEL OR GOOSENECK TRAILERS. ANALYSIS OF FIELD REPORTS REVEALS THAT THIS CONDITION IS NOT OCCURRING WITH THE VEHICLE IN CRUISE CONTROL MODE. PREVIOUS INVESTIGATIONS FOR THIS CONDITION INDICATE THAT VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH ADJUSTABLE PEDALS ARE MORE LIKELY TO EXPERIENCE THIS CONCERN WITH THE PEDALS ADJUSTED ALL THE WAY UP, DUE TO CUSTOMERS UNKNOWINGLY TIPPING IN AND OUT OF THE PEDAL WHEN VEHICLE/TRAILER BUCK JERK INTERACTION OCCURS. THIS CONDITION IS MORE NOTICEABLE ON AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS EQUIPPED VEHICLES BUT MAY ALSO OCCUR ON MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS, IT CAN ALSO BE PERPETUATED BY AFTERMARKET HITCH INTERACTION. ENGINEERING IS CURRENTLY INVESTIGATING FIELD REPORTS. 2743 - MULTIPLE VEHICLE LINES - USE OF AFTERMARKET LAMPS - DO NOT USE HIGH WATTAGE BULBS SEVERAL AFTERMARKET COMPANIES OFFER REPLACEMENT HEADLAMP BULBS OF A HIGHER WATTAGE RATING THAN OEM STOCK BULBS. THESE BULBS ARE NOT DOT APPROVED AND ARE TYPICALLY SOLD WITH THE DISCLAIMER OF 'FOR OFF-ROAD USE ONLY'. IN ADDITION TO POSSIBLY BEING ILLEGAL FOR STREET USE, THE BULBS ALSO DRAW MUCH MORE CURRENT THAN OEM BULBS. THIS INCREASED CURRENT CAN RESULT IN ACTUATION OF THE SHORT-CIRCUIT PROTECTION FEATURE (LOOKING LIKE BULB BURNOUT), OR DAMAGE TO THE HEADLAMP SWITCH, MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH, WIRING, WIRING CONNECTORS, OR EVEN THE HEADLAMP ASSEMBLIES THEMSELVES. THESE HIGH-WATTAGE AFTERMARKET BULBS SHOULD BE REPLACED WITH OEM BULBS, AND CUSTOMERS ADVISED NOT TO USE THEM. 2736 - SOME 2009 F-SUPER DUTY VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 5.4L OR 6.8L ENGINE AND TORQSHIFT TRANSMISSION, MAY EXHIBIT MINOR TRANSMISSION LEAK. SOME 2009 F250-F550 SUPER DUTY EQUIPPED WITH 5.4L OR 6.8L AND TORQSHIFT TRANSMISSION, MAY EXHIBIT A SMALL TRANSMISSION FLUID LEAK. THE LEAK MAY BE CAUSED BY A TRANSMISSION FLUID OVERFILL CONDITION. INSTALL IDS TO READ (TFT) TEMPERATURE. CHECK FLUID LEVEL AT NORMAL OPERATING TEMPERATURE 150-170F (66-77C) AS PER WORKSHOP MANUAL SECTION 307-01 CHECK TRANSMISSION FLUID LEVEL AND CONDITION. IF AN OVERFILL READING IS INDICATED, REFER TO WORKSHOP MANUAL SECTION 307-01 TRANSMISSION FLUID DRAIN AND REFILL, AND ADJUST FLUID LEVEL TO THE CENTER OF THE NORMAL OPERATING TEMPERATURE RANGE (HASH MARK AREA MARKED WITH AN "H" ON THE FLUID LEVEL INDICATOR). 20982 6.0L CORROSION RESISTANT CENTER HOUSING ROTATING ASSEMBLY (CHRA) AND TURBO ASSEMBLIES ALL REMANUFACTURED 6.0L TURBOCHARGERS AND CHRA'S BUILT AFTER 8/24/09 WILL NOW INCORPORATE A NEW CORROSION RESISTANT SURFACE TREATMENT (CRST) AND MAY USE EITHER A NON-RECESSED OR RECESSED CENTER HOUSING. THE APPEARANCE OF THE CRST PROCESSED CHRA WILL APPEAR AS A FLAT "TEFLON-LIKE" COATING AND HAVE HEAT DISCOLORATION FROM THE HEAT TREATING PROCESS. THIS IS A PRODUCT CHARACTERISTIC AND SHOULD BE CONSIDERED NORMAL. NOTE: PICTURES OF THE REVISED COATING CAN BE FOUND ON THE 'PTS' WEBSITE UNDER 'SERVICE TIPS' FOR THE AFFECTED VEHICLE LINES. EFFECTIVE DATE: 09/16/2009 20451 2004-2008 E-SERIES/2003-2007 F-SUPER DUTY/2003-2005 EXCURSION/2006-2009 LOW CAB FORWARD/2004-2007 F650-F750 - OIL COOLER SERVICE TIP SOME 6.0L AND 4.5L DIESEL EQUIPPED VEHICLES MAY EXPERIENCE VARIOUS DRIVEABILITY SYMPTOMS AFTER OIL COOLER SERVICE. THIS MAY BE THE RESULT OF THE IPR BECOMING CONTAMINATED AND BEING UNABLE TO CONTROL ICP PROPERLY. IT IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED TO COMPLETELY CLEAN OFF ALL OIL AND DEBRIS PRIOR TO OIL COOLER COVER REMOVAL AND TO INSPECT THE OIL PUMP INLET STRAINER SCREEN FOR DAMAGE PRIOR TO OIL COOLER REPLACEMENT. IF THE SCREEN IS DAMAGED, IT MUST BE REPLACED. THE RESERVOIR MUST BE COMPLETELY CLEANED TO ENSURE THERE IS NO CONTAMINATION TO THE HIGH PRESSURE OIL SYSTEM FROM DEBRIS ENTERING THE OIL DURING OIL COOLER REPLACEMENT. AFTER CLEANING, PRE-FILLING THE RESERVOIR WITH CLEAN OIL WILL HELP PREVENT EXTENDED CRANK TIME FROM AIR ENTERING THE HIGH PRESSURE OIL SYSTEM UPON ASSEMBLY. No. The 6.0L PSD is the same as the VT-375. The 4.5L PSD (LCF/CF) is the same as the VT-275. The fuel filters are the same for both the 275 and the 375 as you mentioned but the oil filters are indeed different. The VT-275 oil filter is shorter and will not work in a 6.0L PSD. Sure, you can snap it into the cap and screw it on but it wont close the drain valve at the bottom of the housing and may also allow oil to bypass the filter media at the bottom.

Order two a week whether you need them or not! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smirk.gif

I totally agree. Do you think it could be something else though?

I'll match your claim and raise you this: I have yet to replace an oil cooler with an EGR cooler for any reason. I have done a handful for leaking oil into the cooling system. All of the EGR coolers I diagnosed never showed excessive EGR/EOT (@25 degree specification) nor was there any oil cooler restriction. None of those trucks have come back for a repeat repair to my knowledge. I did have one test with about a 15 degree split which at the time was acceptable... now it's not. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/shrug.gif I know my shop HAS seen a few. Now, are we inching closer to mandatory EGR/OIL paired cooler replacements? I am guessing my results are not in line with the statistics but I also know a lot of techs fudge the numbers because they insist on replacing the oil coolers. Where oh where does the truth lie. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/scratchhead.gif

I guess we should expect oil coolers to be on back order now?

turbo oil feed line

I have replaced two high pressure turbos. The last one the oil feed line was coked badly as was the oil return. I think it got a new bolt but I don't remember looking at it. Now that you made that post I wish I had. -
Aww cheer up Jimmy. Things aren't so bad as they cant get worse. At least you are still alive and kicking. If you enjoy Christmas and the holidays then you have something to look forward to next year. Some of the Christmases in the last few years haven't all been great for me so I think I know how you feel. This year however was a nice holiday for me. Shared a lot of the time with family and friends and there was snow on the ground - YES! In New Jersey! Today it is 48 degrees and windy, most of the snow is now gone but it was nice to have a cold white Christmas for once. There is always something magical about having small children in the house during the Holidays - and a new kitten to liven things up!

Congratulations! That certainly is moving on.

With regard to the FICM being bolted on the engine, how many other manufacturers do the same? I know that a CAT C7 has the ECM bolted directly on the block. This is due to the fact that an engine manufacturer has no choice when designing their engines than to provide secure placement of their control modules. So I think this would also be true with a Cummins engine and others. Not that that makes it the best idea... I agree that the heat from the engine certainly is not good for any electronic component, especially a module. The new TSB is from what I can tell, a process for technicians to PROPERLY diagnose module related concerns. The tests will help discover harness problems and operating conditions that WILL impact the operation of the module. Electrical devices do not withstand extended low voltage operation and high resistance in power and ground circuits. It's cool that they offer us straight time to ensure we take the time to go through the steps. Unfortunately my company limits the amount of straight time they are "willing" to claim... a by-product of the bullying from the warranty Nazi's. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/borgsmile-1.gif Our suffering continues.

I guess the irony here is the fact that you have oil coming out the tail pipe. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/scratchhead.gif -
