  1. VIRUS ALERT The embedded YouTube video in the this topic has been removed. Apparently some sort of relatively aggressive virus is affecting certain embedded YouTube videos. Some are saying it affects IE and Firefox users, while others say it's only going after IE. The virus is called Actns/Swif.T and seems to contain a redirect to a phishing website embedded within a SWF file. The site apparently installs Antivirus 2009, which is malware. Be careful because this one appears to have just broken out today. If you find yourself being automatically redirected or experience other weird pop-ups, especially for something called Antivirus 2009, don't click on anything.
  2. Glad to hear you figured it out even if it did kick your ass. We've all been there. I actually had a customer tell me I was an idiot when I diagnosed his rough idle as a bad flywheel. That is a symptom I doubt I will ever forget.
  3. I wanted to like what this guy is doing. This website was mentioned here before but I recently caught a topic on upper engine oil changes on TDS and this site was mentioned. I revisited this site and sat down to watch his videos. How many inaccuracies can you spot in this video alone? Do you think this guy really know what he is talking about? For someone taking pot shots at dealership service departments I expected better. There are more videos @ powerstrokehelp.com It reminds me of that Diesel Radio... sales pitch. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/popcorn.gif YOU TUBE VIDEO REMOVED SEE BELOW
  4. This strengthens the case against Ford. The HPFP is not a field serviceable part to begin with. If there is no WIF code in the PCM and the fuel sample is clean then what exactly are we to to? Is this a sign that the Ford/Raycor fuel conditioning module is not effective enough? Is the WIF sensor at fault? Usually if the customer is negligent it is fairly obvious but in the service bay we can only rely on what we can observe and what our diagnostic methods will tell us. When a HPFP self destructs it tends to generate a lot of debris and if that debris hides any evidence of water or rust... /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/shrug.gif
  5. Many of the trucks I see with carbon issues have had long term running problems involving injectors. These problems stem from various causes like FICM's, harness problems, DEFECTIVE RUSTY FUEL TANKS and crap fuel. If the truck passes all testing and has no misfiring injectors what else can you do? You cant test the fuel so you cant prove that it is the cause. Maintenance issues ARE detectable however.

  7. That is a good idea Greg. But I am a purist and remove body bolts completely by hand and laying on my back and wrenching these bolts out is just not feasible. They do require a bit of torque to get them going and good footing on the floor. The reason I think using any power tool is that you lose the ability to feel the bolt. If I feel a bolt is fighting me I can apply more heat or penetrant. I realize that this is a flat rate time killer but I would rather spend a little extra time getting these bolts out the first time with no cage bolt casualties. Who wants to waste time fucking around with them?
  8. Oh for crying out loud! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/banghead.gif This is something else Ford needs to make a decision on and make it official. Next they are going to say that carbon fouling is not a warrantable condition.
  9. I have only spun one and it was a front nut. That was before the no air tool warning and knowing to heat the bolts. I recently began hitting the bolts with rust penetrant as those holes in the under body provide access. The last cab I raised the bolts had that dry, tight skipping thing going on and they were really hard to turn. After a little spray things smoothed out.
  10. I found out today that a Napa store near us has, or has access to a hot tank. Does warranty pay for this like outside labor or machine shop work?
  11. The only time I can envision Jum sitting in a lawn chair he has a tall iced glass of Coke and rye in his hand.
  12. Think of a torque wrench handle as a lever. The longer it is, the less force that is required at the handle to achieve a specific torque specification than a shorter torque wrench. This would apply to any wrench actually. In other words, the 13" wrench SHOULD require a HIGHER setting than the 11.5" wrench to achieve the same torque. So when we plug the numbers into the calculator and change the length of the wrench the output is changing in the opposite direction than we expect. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/scratchhead.gif AHH! The above is true for a wrench and a socket because a socket is at the fulcrum or pivot point. When we are making a calculation for use with AN ADAPTER the torque spec is offset by the adapter itself. The torque spec still measured at the fulcrum but now the fulcrum is BETWEEN the force applied and the output at the fastener. This is the whole reason for the calculator to begin with.
  13. FORD: 2008-2009 F-Super Duty ISSUE: Some 2008-2009 F-Super Duty 250-550 vehicles equipped with a 6.4L diesel engine and built before 10/1/2008 may exhibit significant amounts of white smoke from the exhaust pipe while driving in high humidity or rainy conditions at temperatures above 40 °F (4 °C). This smoke only appears during a moderate to full throttle tip-in that is performed after a period of steady state driving. ACTION: Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition. SERVICE PROCEDURE This procedure only applies if the vehicle meets the following criteria: Concern is described as significant amounts of white smoke from the exhaust pipe. White smoke only occurs in high humidity or rainy conditions above 40 °F (4 °C). White smoke only appears during a moderate to heavy tip-in that is performed after a period of steady state driving (approximately 20 minutes) No diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) are present. Concern is not a result of regeneration, a cleaning exhaust filter event. If all of the criteria above is true, then replace the Charge Air Cooler Assembly with a new revised part per Workshop Manual, Section 303-12. PART NUMBER PART NAME 7C3Z-6K775-B Charge Air Cooler Assembly WARRANTY STATUS: Eligible Under Provisions Of New Vehicle Limited Warranty Coverage And Emissions Warranty Coverage IMPORTANT: Warranty coverage limits/policies are not altered by a TSB. 14. Hey, No kiddin! That can't be right. I played with it and came to the same conclusion. I will have to look into that further... ON EDIT: I tried three other torque calculators and they all did the same thing. THe math is right and the formulas are the same. I need to wake up before trying to think about this. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/coffee.gif

  16. Not Here! We might fuck with each other once in a while but we aren't fucking around @ the DTS!
  17. And besides, the strut bearings are under the hood with all the rest of the mechanical stuff.
  18. Amen. We need to remember that in the end all of this turmoil affects a lot of individual people. We have lost a few dealers in our area, Ford and Lincoln Mercury. With all of the rest of the stores being slow I wonder where all these techs end up. Now, every day I wake up wondering "will it happen to me?" If it does, where would I go? I don't see anyone hiring at dealers in the classifieds ads on line. The only up-side to dealers closing is that there should be an increase in traffic for the dealerships that are still around. The only increase I have noted is more ambulances and Lincolns.
  19. Grim reality... Quote: "Ford management in prior meetings has indicated that the Twin Cities is 'overdealered' and ... when dealership vacancies happen they have indicated to the dealer body that they would not be filled and at that point would be terminated," he told the Gazette. "In this case, the Twin Cities is considered an 'overdealered' area. If Ford management is consistent with what they have indicated and vowed to the dealers, then the dealer point would be terminated."
  20. THAT IS EXACTLY the kind of crap that people need to be fired for. It is exactly that kind of crap that unions protect. It is irresponsible, unproductive and unprofessional. Not only is the union at fault, so is the management that allows it to go on.
  21. I'll guess it is likely failed EGR coolers. That is what I am putting together.
  22. Actually, I did. On a DPF related call I asked about servicing "ash laden" DPFs and the Hot-Line had NO ADVICE. Maybe Wal-Mart Auto Service will offer DPF cleaning. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smirk.gif
  23. You know Toni, I have been biting my tongue on this so hard... and now you go and tease me some more. (just realized we don't have a tongue out smiley) I want to, I really want to say "why cant you just remove the inner fender well and unbolt the manifold?" Ahhh the blasted procedure and the warning! We are a proud bunch indeed and I have no doubt that most, if not all, of us would heed the procedure and the warning... but there is that nagging feeling that says, what if? Just what if? I just cracked a fresh bottle of Jaegermeister /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smirk.gif
  24. I think we have bantered the topic of unions/onions before. I for one think unions, once very necessary, have outlived their usefulness and for the most part are no longer necessary. I am one of those individuals that believes a worker should be hired and paid for their ability, qualification and effort. Accountability plays a big role. While employers must be held accountable for holding their end of the deal, workers too need to be responsible and accountable for their actions. When we hear about union shops and the lack of effort and pride and the "thats good enough" attitude it speaks volumes. Not making enough hours? Not being paid top dollar? What have you done to better yourself to be better qualified? Improve your productivity? Leaning back and letting the union do your bidding seem like it will cost you more than it will benefit you. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/2cents.gif I agree with Bruce that the unions are a big problem but are only a part of the bigger picture. I think a large portion of Americans need to get their heads out of their asses. Corporate America needs have their asses held to the fire and government needs to get the fuck out of the way. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smhair.gif
