And in stark contrast I have only replaced two 6.0L cylinder heads since it's inroduction. This does not include total engine failures/replacements. I think my shop's total only doubles or triples that number.

I read about that in the Econoline material. Looks interesting for business owners.

04 exhaust, cac, intake and turbo filled with oil
Keith Browning replied to toby's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
And what a first post! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/shocked.gif Toby, you have a lot of things to consider and you will need to be methodical in your diagnosis. You AND the customer need to realize and agree that repairing this vehicle may need to be done in stages and you both need to be aware of the worst case scenario from the beginning. (engine, turbo and catalytic converter may all be toast) What intrigues me the most is that you said the customer heard a noise and the engine stalled. When you run the engine does it start normally and run smoothly with no base engine or engine knock? If it does you could consider replacing the turbocharger, draining and cleaning the charge air cooler and tubes and replacing the catalytic converter. At this point you will need to run the engine and re-evaluate what you have. All of these parts need to be replaced any way so there is no need to feel like you are wasting time or money but at this point you cannot rule out additional damage. Since a considerable volume of oil has passed through the exhaust the truck will smoke for some time as the oil needs to burn off and clear from the rest of the exhaust system. . If the engine runs poorly, misses and knocks then it is quite likely that there is base engine damage as a result of the oil in the intake system. Repair as required. Be advised that even if the customer has that diesel engine warranty that extends coverage beyond 5/100,000 you will need to follow the warranty guidelines and the prior approval process. My shop saw a couple of these on early build trucks. The root cause was leaking injectors that diluted the engine oil with fuel. Early build 2003 engines had turbocharger oil seals that failed due to fuel dilution resulting in turbo failures and engine failures. Check out the photos from Engine Failure One that shows that failure. Notice the carbon build-up, melted crusty pistons and melted glow plug tips. That engine ran away. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cover.gif Point being that if the first scenario fixes the damage and the base engine appears to be okay you need to determine why the turbo failed. Don't rule out fuel dilution and we can test for that when and if we get to that bridge... but that is not likely on a 2004 truck. Good Luck! -
Cab on Engine R&I
Keith Browning replied to BustedKnucklez's topic in 6.4L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
I did a cab off on a truck with a work hoist but it was no where as big as that. I did have to raise the hoist though and it stayed put as well. It is always worth attempting. -
Here is some information for bulk replacement tubing for your Rotunda fuel gage bar. Try Google to try locating a distributor... NYLAFLOW Type-T 1/8" tubing part #4TD2-52420 This is not a Ford Part # - it is --> S&L Plastics

Congratulations! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbup.gif Looks like the red-headed step children will get theirs. It's about time Ford included you guys in some sort of recognition program like they have done for us in the U.S.

Fluid Reference Charts
Keith Browning replied to Keith Browning's topic in Fuels - Oils - Additives - Chemicals
How about a 2003 7.3L with a bad oil cooler that was filled with orange coolant? Think there is a correlation? This topic keeps coming up and it seems like most Ford dealer service departments completely ignore DCA testing. I'll admit to not having a test kit but I do use the additive when replacing or adding major amounts of green coolant to a diesel engine. When adding engine coolant, use a 50/50 mixture of engine coolant and clean, drinkable water. To maintain the integrity of the coolant and the cooling system: Add Motorcraft Premium Engine Coolant VC-4-A (in Oregon VC-5, in Canada CXC-10) or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESE-M97B44-A (green color), or Motorcraft Premium Gold Engine Coolant VC-7-A or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSS-M97B51-A1 (yellow color). Always fill the cooling system with the same type of coolant that was drained from the system. Do not mix coolant types. Do not add orange-colored Motorcraft Specialty Orange Engine Coolant VC-2, or equivalent meeting WSS-M97B44-D. Mixing coolants may degrade the coolant's corrosion protection. Do not add alcohol, methanol, brine, or any engine coolants mixed with alcohol or methanol antifreeze. These can cause engine damage from overheating or freezing. Do not mix with recycled coolant unless it meets the requirements of Ford specifications ESE-M97B44-A or WSS-M97B51-A1. Not all coolant recycling processes meet these Ford specifications; use of such a coolant may ham the engine and cooling system components. -
Anyone see this yet? Sounds like we have some thinkers over at Ford. Good examples of what engine cooling system conditions allow flushing and those that warrant engine replacement. It also gives you a good procedure for effectively flushing oil from the cooling system using 3 GALLONS of Simple Green and a list of parts to replace in the process.

Yep. I looked this morning. All you need to do is login to the FMC dealer main page and when they release it there will be a message... or you can look up the recall and read if it still says that it is suspended.
-
Glad this site is helpful. It's only one of the many resources we have available to us... I personally have not had any problems with programming 2008 modules other than not paying attention to the key cycles. As stated in the suspension notice we are advised to suspend ALL PCM/TCM programming until this concern has been corrected with the reprogramming. Even if you are not programming a PCM for the recall the same calibrations are used. Also, Ford will not pay any claims for PCM programming on these vehicles until further notice. I assume this would include non recall repairs so be very careful. If you blank out a TCM be prepared for your dealer to eat the module and repair after you wait for them to become available. Don't be a stranger! All questions and comments are welcome from all members. This will make our forums even better. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbup.gif

Leon, if you think you have a SYNC problem print out this diagnostic sheet: sync.pdf We beat the hell out of this topic last year... -
Outstanding. Could not have put it better, been more accurate and real. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbup.gif

I recall reading about this... it was in the My Ford Magazine some time ago and now it is no longer available on line. Any way, I found the Ecoboost info flier (see attachment) which explained the concept. Is seems that Ecoboost implements direct injection, variable cam timing AND turbocharging. The result is more power and higher efficiency. They can make an engine smaller because of these increases which also makes the engines lighter. I don't know it this is ALL direct injected gas engines or just the ones under the name Ecoboost. Read the attachment thingy...

'08 Mustang AM radio reception
Keith Browning replied to GregH's topic in Body, Chassis and Electrical
Sounds like a loose connection or erratic continuity in the antenna circuit. I base this on the fact that the concern happens only while the car is moving and this vibrating. You might try swapping a known good radio and even a new antenna lead and mast. You don't need to install it, hang the radio and plug it in and go for a road test. -
I like you Dwayne. I also like women, and humor, but the picture crosses the line and had to go. You may stay. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

BINGO!

I was going to ask if this was a direct injected engine. Am I Right in thinking that all of the direct injected engines are also all turbocharged?

Listen, I don't want to come off as a bitter conservative but I have serious concerns about this situation. As we learn more about the people Osama is appointing to his cabinet the more I worry. Some serious hard line partisan left wingers. We are going to see change alright. I do share some of the optimism though. I was really jazzed up to see a black man and a woman running for the two highest offices in the nation. It does make a statement about our nation in a positive way. I don't see this as a sign that we have moved beyond all of our prejudices and fears but this is certainly a good catalyst and a good sign. This administration and congress have two years to do some real good or two years to fuck things up really bad. Pelosi and Reed have had two years to do something and they have done NOTHING. I guess time will tell so sit back and have a nice tall glass of Kool-Aid. What? Someone already drank it all! It must have been spiked too. That explains what happened! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif I think I had better sign off on this one. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/rotz.gif

lcf tsb's for hard start long crank hot
Keith Browning replied to robp823's topic in 4.5L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
No, that will close the valve. many of us have taken a connector either from a salvaged harness or a repair pigtail and added a length of wire to it. Put a couple cheap alligator clips on the ends and you can fully energize an IPR on any 4.5L & 6.0L engine. My experience has shown that the 4.5L likes to eat up the o-rings on the oil rail block off tubes and the stand pipes more than the STC fittings blow apart. For some reason thy just disintegrate. If you access the oil rails I recommend removing all of the plugs on the rail to inspect them even though you can remove the block offs and the sand pipes without removing them. It only takes a few minutes and it can save you from getting bitten in the ass. It has happened in my shop several times - myself included. Unfortunately the Master Diagnostic software leaves a lot to be desired in comparison to the Ford IDS. Remember that the LCF does not use a Ford PCM. It uses a Navistar diamond logic module and requires their diagnostic software. You will also discover that many PIDS are not available and you need to use the jumper harnesses to diagnose several items on the engine using your DVOM. If you are a certified medium duty dealer you should have the kit containing 3 or 4 of the jumper harnesses. From my experience I will bet you have bad do-rings on the block off and/or the stand pipe tubes. Go on, jump in! The water is warm. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smirk2.gif -
Too late. The markets have been reacting to the idea of an Osama presidency. The day after election day: the market tanks. Is that a positive reaction? The democrat party in Congress has caused most of this starting with the sub-prime mortgage mess - Osama was in the middle of it. He has helped to cause all this. He STILL has yet to tell us HOW he is going to change things.

Banks chip etc.
Keith Browning replied to Fordtechnician's topic in Upgrade and Aftermarket Equipment
I don't think "axing the warranty" is the right call here. Is that what really meant? I think that denying coverage for that particular repair is a better approach and way of explaining it. I believe that is the general way of thinking most techs and dealers have concerning these trucks. -
I know how you feel - I want to cry. With a Democrat controlled House and Senate teamed up with the most liberal Democrat president in history I am scared for our future. Honestly scared to the bone. We will see how much damage Pelosi, Reed and Osama are going to inflict on this great country in the next two years then hopefully in the next mid-tem elections the balance of power can be adjusted in Congress to keep things in check. What I think most people don't realize is that a one party rule has the potential to do so many bad things. From what I have read and heard the worst has yet to come. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif Welcome to the U.S.S.A. (United Socialist States of America)
