intermittent compressor surge?
Keith Browning replied to Joey Kaylor's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Hmm, I do remember some mention about draining the oil more effectively. Back to the topic, I just took this shot of a worn unison ring slot causing hesitation on acceleration, surging at all speeds and smoke. The sad thing is that the tech working on the truck cleaned the turbo and reinstalled it and somehow never saw this... or the leaking EGR cooler. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/rolleyes.gif -

new oil coolers contaminated
Keith Browning replied to Brad Clayton's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
I finally came across an oil cooler that needed replacing and the new one had some crap in it as described. I made a point to show my new tech who lost ICP minutes after an oil cooler replacement... then I took a few good quality close ups. Looks like leftover dried up cleaning solution. -

intermittent compressor surge?
Keith Browning replied to Joey Kaylor's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Now that Bruce mentions it I would like clarification as to HOW the larger drain tube is supposed to affect coking. I think it has to do with coking of the turbine components rather than the bearing which is traditionally what coking is referring to. -

There were a couple of good topics on this but this is the one I found first, perhaps a search will reveal the others. Read this topic--> Sweeeeeet! -
Another EGR valve?!
Keith Browning replied to snw blue by you's topic in 6.4L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Yeah, I had a similar truck that has gotten three valve in total so far. Very low mileage township unit and we could never find a root cause. We (me and engineering) thought it might be the fuel too. Come to think of it, it has been just about long enough for the truck to return. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/crazy.gif -
Poppin' Out The Intake
Keith Browning replied to Keith Browning's topic in 6.4L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Despite being broken at the keeper groove, the valve was not as tight in the head as I would have expected. I recall one or two 7.3L's I really had to pound on the valves to get them out! Anyhoo, rocker was also broken, the push rod was straight. I would have bet the valve and piston had kissed but there are no marks in the piston at all. Considering the broken parts I am guessing that they actually did. Forging ahead... Decided to repair this one like I had in the past. I have some valve body hones that work perfectly for cleaning out valve guides. A few passes with a drill and we are ready to insert a new valve when it comes along with a list of other stuff. In case you are wondering, yes, I will remove the other valves in this head and inspect them. I am really surprised every time I disassemble a cylinder head just how little lubrication the valves get. They almost seem dry! -
Question , 05 F-250 , Stalls on decel.
Keith Browning replied to 38ryr88's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Live and learn - that is why we are here - no? I still say it is unusual for an STC fitting but now we know better. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif -
Got me a unit poppin out the intake on a 6.4L. looks like bank 1 with misfire codes for cyl #1 and #3 showing low on power balance. Cab coming off today... One of the #1 exhaust valves is seized in the head and the top of the valve stem is snapped off with the keeper.

Question , 05 F-250 , Stalls on decel.
Keith Browning replied to 38ryr88's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
I am guessing the lack of any mention of DTC's means there were none to point you in a direction. Does your shop own an VDR? IF it were me I would install our VDR and drive it, have someone else drive it while I continue to work or send the customer off with it and instructions on it's use. Obviously my answer to you is to attempt to record some data. Not so sure I would agree that a STC fitting is the cause because stalling on decel is not something you hear as being associated with fitting failures, but it is possible. The few I have seen over the years were caused by sticking IPR valves ohhhhhhh and maybe one or two biased ICP's. -
There ya go, and now that you mention it, the reason I know that the large pool of oil and the stain on the street some 40 feet long is hydraulic oil is because the driver left the empty oil drums in the street.

I have been enjoying the news feeds on the Diesel Mentor site... in one article about General Motors and it's competitors and the effects of fuel costs on the truck and SUV market I read this interesting little snippet: Quote: He said Ford's next big pickup development doesn't come for a couple years, when it hopes to launch a smaller, lighter and more fuel-efficient pickup dubbed the F-100. The real question here is what the hell is the RANGER supposed to be?

This is the company who's run-down, ragged-assed piece of shit trucks leave oil slicks and pools of hydraulic oil on the street in front of our dealership... ought to call HAZMAT when they pull up.

4.5 misfiring under load
Keith Browning replied to Alex Bruene's topic in 4.5L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Alex I ran into this with a VT-365 no too long ago and it requires the use of the injector disable feature in Master Diagnostics. If you don't have the MD Truck software and comm cable you are dead in the water. I have had the opportunity to play with this a bit and it gives you a real appreciation for the Ford electronics and the IDS capabilities... See this topic as it might have something for you: http://www.forddoctorsdts.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=13439&page=1#Post13439 -
Yes, good luck! This is the kind of opportunity that you should not ever pass over. Even if it does not work out from either side it cant happen at all unless you go! I would love for an opportunity to fall my way, unfortunately it would have to guarantee more money as I cant afford to move left or right until the kiddies get older and the Mrs. starts working again. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/rockon.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/rockon.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/rockon.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/rockon.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/rockon.gif

So would it please you if I drove a 7,000 lb pickup with an insatiable appetite for fuel just because no matter what year or mileage and condition I can keep it running like a top simply to advertise my expertise and vocation? Then I can look like an asshole just like the other north Jersey assholes driving $65,000 diesel pick-ups with no cargo, trailer hitch or passengers for that matter? Will it score me some points if I disclose that my 2001 5.0L AWD Explorer gets 13 MPG has rusty bumpers, nerf bars and tailgate? It has yet to strand me and it makes me yell "YEEEE HAAAA" when I smash my right foot down! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

new oil coolers contaminated
Keith Browning replied to Brad Clayton's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Mike, what I was getting at is that we know there was an issue with these coolers, apparently Ford does as well but there is nothing officially documented to support claims against this. After the cooler is installed I would think that the debris/evidence has disappeared... straight into the pump. Prove it? Without documents to back it up you are on thin ice. -

/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/rotz.gif Jim Jim Jim Jim... I keep "newer" cars in my stable for the very reason that they are more reliable than an old clunker that my customers might not see me stranded on the side of the road in... or more importantly my family. I really have no desire to be spending time and money fixing my rides - maintaining is one thing - small repairs okay. If my neighbors and customers saw me at the market with a broken down vehicle they would more than likely be thinking I wasn't a very good technician if MY car was down, but, I am not sure what they would actually see with their noses in the air. Aside from that I INSIST that my Queen and the two Princesses (7 & 2) have their fannies cradled in comfort and safety in a new and appropriate vehicle... all while sipping cold juice and watching Dora The Explorer. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cool.gif

new oil coolers contaminated
Keith Browning replied to Brad Clayton's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
I agree that makes it sound like they know something but we just did a CASH oil cooler and the truck died three minutes after the repair down the street on a road test. So, since there doesn't seem to be an official paper trail would that be a "service installed" warranty repair with "related damage?" Talk about a shit sandwich!
