  1. Well I knew the VCV would not cause this. Truck returned today but this time the CEL was coming on while towing, but, none the less the code returned. Reran the tests intil I got to testing the PCV and the VCV/ I just pulled the PCV and drained the fuel rail into a black cap. Bunch of fine, shiny metal particles. No rust or corrosion. Time to order a high pressure kit.
  2. Oct 30 2017 5541 - 2011-2014 F Super Duty With 6.7L Diesel Engine - Exhaust Noise And/or Odor Some 2011 – 2014 SuperDuty vehicles equipped with 6.7L Diesel engine may experience an exhaust leak due to broken exhaust manifold studs. New parts have been released to service this condition. Replace the exhaust manifold on the side with a broken stud. On cylinders 1,2,3,5,6 and 7 use stud part number W715713-S431. If replacing the studs on cylinders 4 and/or 8 use stud part number W717172-S900and replace both studs and install new spacers and heat shields on the affectedside(s). Refer to Workshop Manual Section 303-01. Part numbers: Heat shield left side, FC3Z-9Y427-A and DC3Z-9A462-B for the right side. Spacer part numbers: FC3Z- 00810-A. Exhaust manifold part numbers: DC3Z-9430-A (RH) and DC3Z-9431-A (LH). Exhaust Manifold Gaskets: FC3Z-9448-A. Exhaust Manifold Nut: W701706-S430
  3. I remembered that topic here. Even though I did not have any low pressure system codes I still pulled the pick-up assembly to have a look. This particular truck also had the aft axle fuel tank rust out internally a year ago and I replaced it with a Titan plastic tank. I wanted to see if there was anything unusual going on there - there was not though.
  4. Had a 2014 F450 in with the check engine light on and reduced engine power due to a P0087. No other codes. The truck Was in a week ago with the same code, same concern and the tech put filters in it and road tested it and sent it off. I took the truck this time, cleared the code and got the code to repeat instantly. The pinpoint tests lead to M20 removing the fuel return line from the left fuel rail, turning on the fuel pump and playing with the PCV and VCV and monitoring the fuel flow out of the rail. here is the pinpoint test question: Does the fuel flow from the left hand fuel rail while the F_VCV PID is commanded to the lowest duty cycle value and stop when the F_VCV PID is commanded to the highest duty cycle value? Well fuel was flowing then it almost stopped... it reduced to a drip about every two seconds. (When I performed the same test for the PCV the fuel flow stopped completely) So I interpreted that as "No" it did not stop, or at least not fully. I replaced the VCV accordingly and road tested the truck with no repeat check engine light. But given the possible cause of "VCV stuck CLOSED" I am a little uneasy about this one so I am keeping my fingers crossed. How would YOU have answered the question given the results?
  5. Maybe they used to just "round up" to the next whole number.
  6. Okay, I got it to read the VIN on a 2018 Transit which is not supported but it works. I made sure IDS was closed as well as PTS. Now I just need to wait for more supported vehicles
  7. Interesting. It seems for the longest time IDS gets temperamental when I have PTS open. It annoys the hell out of me. I am thinking with FDRS there are similar concerns.
  8. My latest nightmare comes from the county special services division. It is a 2015 F550 chassis with a complete 1/2" armor plate body and this thing is frickin heavy! The glass is almost 2" thick. It is labeled as a rescue unit but it also has tactical uses: water cannon, turret, gun ports and electronic communication. Supposedly is also used to transport the President from the local airport at times. It was in for an EGR valve not fully seating and turning on the check engine light. I really hope it will never require any major repairs.
  9. Just a new start - oversized topics need to be capped soooo it is time for part 7!
  10. I installed it this morning. Version 13? Anyway, it won't connect with my VCM2 even though it recognizes it.
  11. EGR Valve fixed it. When I got it off and put a bright light in it you could see light around the seat. Despite no codes specifically related to the valve it had to be not closing fully intermittently.
  12. 2015 F550 comes in with CEL coming on and going off. Not on now. I get the P132B and P2073 out of continuous memory, performed pinpoint test J because you diag EGR or air management codes first. Passes the first 9 tests and instructs me to replace the EGR valve. I dont necessarily like replacing parts on a truck that has no verifiable symptoms but I cant do nothing. I looked through the self help section of the Hotline Form anf the one report with this DTC indicated there was also an intermittent check engine light and P2073 which the tech stated a new EGR valve did correct. Anyone run into this code before? Just curious as we don't see much of this.
  13. My wife got into a 2017 Explorer and we love it. Our last one was a 2001 AWD XLT Sport with the 5.0L in it. With the 3.7L it's just as fast but it rides and handles soooo much better on the current platform. The only problem we had with it was it was totaled at 1700 miles. THe vehicle protected my wife beautifully. We were able to replace it with an almost exact replacement changing the interior color to all black which she wanted.
  14. Well I am also of the opinion that the gas contamination is not significant however it will affect lubricity and the ignition of the fuel. These high pressure common rail systems are not very forgiving. I did text me after putting some additive in the tank and driving home 200+ miles and it ran fine.
  15. Guy texts me and tells me he accidentally pumped half a gallon into his diesel tank in his 2011 F350. Was topping off for the trip home and he had a little under 3/4 tank. Then he topped it off with diesel before what he did set in. He asked what to do? I have heard of similar stories where the trucks were driven with no real problems. I told him the best thing would be to drain the tank and refill. Option 2 would be to get some additive that will boost the lubricity of the fuel and see how it runs - no smoke and strange ignition sounds he might be okay and run it down to 1/2 and fill it again to dilute it some more. I ended by recommending draining the fuel again. He opted not to. Thoughts? Experiences?
  16. Our service department finally got an OTC Powertrain lift. I finally got to use it today to remove an aft axle tank from a truck. Nice piece of equipment. I have seen a few engine and trans assemblies come out on it too. The universal brackets are a nice feature too. You bolt the trans to them and they will hold it in place when removing the engine. Anyone else have one?
  17. Personally I think they are stupid for not just making the tube and sensor available. I bet they would if this part/failure was a recall.
  18. Section 2 in the PCED will have the drive cycles as well as the procedure to get the truck out of the SCR speed limitation or idle only mode.
  19. I don't see why high strength bolts would not be more than sufficient for a shock tower. I think I have seen a truck or two over the years with this done to them.
  20. Who needs door latches when you can hold the door closed with TA-31? Nice large bead all around the door. Try to get that door open after it cures I dare ya!
  21. I recently had a 2017 6.2L in with a fuel gauge accuracy and distance to empty that was way off issue that was corrected by TSB 17-0046 by replacing the fuel tank and sender. But today I had two 2017 F550 ambulances ready for delivery to the FDNY that had 1/2 tank of fuel or more and the low fuel light was on. The distance to empty on both was about 60 miles. I thought this might be a similar issue to I looked the tank over really good and found no damage. No code anywhere and of course they passed all testing. THese rigs spent the last several moths being moved around the upfitter's lots, idle to hell and driven a little. The average MPG was in the mid 5's on both trucks. Turns out that when this happens the fuel calculations which are a 300 mile running average will give you these numbers and cause this condition. Perfectly normal but not acceptable to a customer. TO correct such an issue you need to reset the modules according to the Hot-Line. Disconnect all batteries for 5 minutes then touch the negative and positive battery cables together for 30 seconds. Then restore all connections. THis will effectively reset the MPG to the default 18 MPG and as a result return the DTE to a more realistic number as well as turn off the low fuel light. The light is not triggered by the actual fuel gauge but the a calculation of that and the average MPG. that determines the DTE which for normal keys is 60 miles. Keep that one in the back of your minds.
