Fuel pressure gauge(good idea or not)
Keith Browning replied to dieseldoc's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Or at the VERY LEAST a low pressure warning light when pressure falls below 45-PSI. -
Here is the TSB in PDF format... click on the attachment!

NJ is covered in ice, it is 9 AM and have no work coming in. Time to play maybe? If you had some free time on your hands and a few 2008 6.4L trucks near by, what might you get creative with? Any bugs you want to try? Tests? No major disassembly or modifying allowed but who says we cant run tests and unplug stuff to see what happens? /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbup.gif I do have some shop stuff to do but I am open to ideas!

Fuel pressure gauge(good idea or not)
Keith Browning replied to dieseldoc's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Let us see, a hand full of engineers and CAD operators, one sensor one gauge, some wire, six months, a dozen prototypes, a few test vehicles... hmmm. Put me down for $2.6 million in the pool! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif -
2008 F750/C7-CAT Check Engine Light
Keith Browning replied to Keith Browning's topic in General Diesel Engines
I don't remember the exact name and function CAT called it from my training but it is involved with regen. I think it was supposed to be an override to prevent a regen event during unfavorable conditions. I DO remember being told that Ford and GM trucks would be built without the switch... they didn't say that they were just going to tape them up behind the diagnostic connector. I was looking in the wiring diagram but ford does not show much CAT stuff beyond anything that is network or vehicle power related... I will check the CAT manual next time I have one in the shop to view. -
What did you find out Jeff? That the link is accessible without requiring an authorized login and password?

Fuel pressure gauge(good idea or not)
Keith Browning replied to dieseldoc's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Hey I have always thought that a fuel pressure gauge would be a great thing to have but it would be best if it were electric for obvious safety reasons and if the gauge were to fail. I for one would be highly pissed at having diesel fuel stinking up my dash and cab. -
Uh... you HAD the link posted and I was surprised that it worked without going through the Secure Web login Portal. IF you truncate the URL to just the subdomain address you get the login screen. It does not show as a secure site so ??? /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/shrug.gif I guess Ford doesn't mind that the whole World can see allow badly they pay technicians.

You can post a link, but you wont get to see the page without logging in to FMC Dealer

2008 F750/C7-CAT Check Engine Light
Keith Browning replied to Keith Browning's topic in General Diesel Engines
Bruce, the codes set usually within the first drive I assume because that is how quickly the MIL comes back on. the 310 code is nothing to be concerned with, I was told that is a DPF regen count code or something like that. By the way, these trucks DO have a regen bypass switch under the dash taped up to the harness. A lot has gone down on this one over the last week including me getting the flu. I now have managers and engineers involved from all three manufacturers with this truck now due to go to a Kenworth dealer in Elizabeth, the closest place my FSE could find that was both a CAT and Allison certified dealer and repair facility. He will be going with the truck personally today. I wish them luck and eagerly await the resolution. Basically, the CAT ECU us not properly inhaling the vehicle speed data through the J1939 network... according to the code. I cannot access the Allison control module to verify the output parameters. On this truck, this vehicle speed data is supplied to the GEM via hard wire and is then supplied to the CAT ECM through the J1939 network. The speedo works, the cluster passes electrical testing as does the network. I spent most of Thursday on the phone with a Ford engineer and a Caterpillar engineer (extremely helpful and professional) trying different parameter configurations and types including turning off the vehicle speed data altogether. Oh, we switched it from revs/mile to pulses/mile, performing the math on both using tire size, axle ratio and tailshaft speed sensor ring tooth count... only made matters worse. The last thing I did was to verify all of the parameters were properly programmed at the factory, I was given the production sheet for the electrical programming for all modules on the truck. I also verified the GEM axle size ant tire ratio settings. The ONLY discrepancy I can find is with the tire rotations per mile spec. Ford's sheet and all of the modules are set to 496 revs/mile. The Hotline engineers data, our math and the scan tool all list a Michelin XL 11R22.5 tire as 500 revs per mile for a difference of 4 revolutions per mile. Significant? Probably not. I wish them luck, I have two or three more in the lot with the same concern. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/crazy.gif -
I have a question! OOOOH OOOOH! Pick meeeeee! ME! If there were no filters installed then how did fuel pass through the spring loaded inlet valve on the fuel pump and the fuel filter stand pipe?

You didn't speak out of turn Jim, like I wrote, the subject just struck a nerve with me. I'll be fine in the morning. As for you, don't change a thing! As for the rest of you , don't hold back if you think you might offend someone or challenge an opinion. This is WHY we all visit here, right! Carry on fellas /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cool.gif

I just pent 30 minutes typing out a long reply which I decided not to post. Mike needed to vent and asked us for an opinion of which he has now a few. I don't think dissecting his diagnostic process or whether he checked OASIS was relevant at all. Regardless of his intentions or whether he had any clue that his actions would affect another human being personally, this customers actions were wrong. For me to expand upon that at all would be senseless folly. Mike will get over it and I am sure the customer and his 4X4 are quite happy.
-
None the less Jim, it was a stupid customer trick if I ever saw one. A telephone call is little consolation for the lost time, not just the time spent on the vehicle he is now not going to be paid for looking at and ordering the part, but also the job he would been working on if this guy hadn't happened along. Courtesy? BULLSHIT! It was likely the customers intention all along to USE Mike and his dealer for a second opinion and that is what I have a problem with. It's the good `ol "hooray for me and fuck everybody else" attitude.

Thanx for the invite Larry but if I can scrape up some cash to travel anywhere it HAS to be Disneyland or I WILL get castrated! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cover.gif But we are NASCAR fans here and my 6-year old daughter is a Kasey Kahne fan and we are waiting for our 2-year old to catch onto the "racey cars." Wanna good laugh? At the beginning of every race the little one shouts "boogety boogety boogety - lets go racing boys!" Even when good `ol D.W. isn't commentating she steps up. When they get older we might try taking them to a race as we are only about an hour away from Pocono. -
Two 7.3's kickin my A$$
Keith Browning replied to CLR95's topic in 7.3L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Had one show up last week I did and didn't realize the fuel heater was involved thinking that the heater was revised. Nope. This 1999 truck had the old style heater, and yep, the anchors were rotted away. Coincidentally, the replacement part was the revised style. -
For the customers sake, I hope you fucked up! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smirk.gif All kidding aside, that sucks royally and unfortunately there is probably nothing you can do about this either. Suck it up Mike, there are a lot of assholes out there... and they call us Stealerships?

Guess again! I just ran the domain name and it came back registered to DNS Manager, Ford Motor Company, Dearborn Michigan. Who says Ford has no sense of humor? Just look at the SLTS!

I stumbled upon the website for Automotive Youth Education systems and thought it was interesting. https://www.ayes.org I am curious as to your opinions on this kind of thing. I will agree that there is definitely a shortage of technicians... Quote: Automotive Youth Educational Systems (AYES) is a partnership among participating automotive manufacturers, participating dealers, and selected high schools/tech prep schools. It's designed to encourage young people to consider satisfying careers in retail automotive service, and prepare them for entry-level career positions or advanced studies in automotive technology.

Not at all. I agree with you and share the same sentiment. I have a job to do and that is all I want to be able to do. But to be honest, I really don't think we have a need to crack any code though. It is, none the less, intriguing.

By reading these posts it seems like you boys know what is right and what is wrong. We are not exactly discussing national security secrets so as of right now I have no objection to this discussion. After all, a call to the Hot Line is all it takes to get a code for an appropriate reason. Is discovering a mathematical equation to create a code illegal? No. Is using that code without "authorization" illegal? I do not know. There is no warning, there is no disclaimer and there is no user agreement with an acceptance of terms check box on the special functions screen so is authorization actually required? Did it occur to you gentleman that it is very likely there are more codes than just the "code of the day" which allow different things to happen and that you will never be given any code that that will allow you to do anything Ford does not want us to do in the first place? Quote: You would not be cracking any passwords or breaking an EULA you would just be modifying your own OS (which you paid for) to run the Ford software. Actually, in most cases we only pay for a license to use software. You do not actually own it. Ironically, this is likely where the real liability is defined. You know, when you installed the IDS software and agreed to the terms of use that nobody ever reads? Since I didn't read it either I suggest that you don't quote me on that! That is incorrect. The DTS forums are NOT accessible without valid username and password beyond the Portal Page. I DO have the option of allowing non-members or member groups to have "view only" access but access rights have only been assigned to authorized members.

Back in the day, when WDS was the tool to use, if you were given a code of the day and you saved it, you could use it again by reseting the date on the WDS to the day the code was known to work. This did work for me but I have not tried this with IDS /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif so if you try it I would love to know if it works just for shits and giggles.
